Open Thread – Brian!

Well. I have to say, I was beginning to wonder when he was going to show up! After a very snowy, and mooseless winter when our fine ungulate friends had the sense to head to lower elevations, Brian has finally showed up! His antlers seem off to a beautiful start, and he is currently munching happily, enjoying the tender new grass, and leaves.

I like the new digs, but I’m having trouble finding my way around a little. Old dogs; new tricks 🙂

I attended a memorial service today for a close friend. I was happy to see so many Democrats there in attendance. She worked so hard for the party. She will be missed .
At the luncheon, I sat next to a Rep. who said she has been on the election board for over 20 years, and can’t stand Rommney. I felt that my friend was smileling down on us from heaven.

The new quilt squares are quite handsome. I could not take the blobby silhouette, so I posted my gravatar dragonfly. Not QUITE having second thoughts, but I’m curious what color quilt square I’d have gotten.

(Trying to figure out the order in which posts are displayed with the new format… it used to be chronological, but I can’t figure out what the current order is. Some help, please? beth.)

    • zyxomma says:

Oldest at the bottom, newest on top. When one replies, the reply comment is nested under the original comment. At least that’s how I read it.

    • Jeanne Devon says:

If you’re talking about the articles, the best way is to look at the listing just to the right of the rotating images at the top. They will be there with most recent at the top and dated, also.

If you are talking about the comments, I’m trying to figure out what will work best. I may throw it out there as a general question. Most recent at the top, or oldest at the top? Any burning preference?

      • beth. says:

Personally, I like the oldest first. I can get the ‘feel’ of the direction the comments are going with that chronology…’flatters have been known to include implicit attitudes/references to previous comments in their postings, and they (the attitudes/references) aren’t always necessarily in form of a [direct] reply to some specific comment.

Too, when the oldest is first, I get to scroll –quickly or slowly, depending– through the previous comments and often pick up a reply that has been posted since I last visited the thread. When the comments are newest first, I have to scroll down to the start of the older/oldest comments (to where I ‘left off’ on my last visit to the thread) and then read upwards from there to get to the newest. (Yup, I’m one of those who delights in the minds of the ‘pups and enjoy thoroughly all of the comments that’re made.) beth.

Seems like just yesterday when my newly-turned-38-yo DS1 shared his little-boy excitement with me at discovering why SpaghettiOs® were called SpaghettiOs®: “They are made out of spaghetti noodles and are shaped like the letter ‘O”!”

Sadly, it *was* just yesterday when he made and shared this discovery…when it comes to ‘getting’ things, he takes after me in more ways than either of us would like to admit. beth.

    Welcome back Brian!

Open thread must read: While governor, Romney SECRETLY repealed his state’s affirmative action law by executive order.

    http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-505245_162-57446014/romney-scuttled-revived-mass-affirmative-action/

Members of civil rights groups found out about this action two months afterward and raised the roof!

    • ks sunflower says:

This speaks to his character, and portrays him as a liar, based upon how he campaigned for the office.

This action also speaks to the kind of President he would be.

      Voters beware.

A call out to fill the Wendy Williamson Auditorium on the UAA campus on Monday, June 4, 5:30 pm.

The EPA has scheduled five days of public comment meetings regarding the assessment, starting yesterday in Seattle. Anchorage is on for Monday.

Here’s a summary of the draft assessment in a short easy nutshell, links to the schedule and EPA on-line public comments.

Public comment will be taken through July 23rd. This is everybody’s business, not just Alaskans or fisherman.

I got a post card to this effect, yet a seriously important piece of information was left off.
Where, what city/town is Wendy Williamson auditorium? I attempted by email from the website and
by the 800 number to get some clarification, but failed. I needed to join something before my email would go thru, whatever a tinyurl is wouldn’t take my question, the people at the 800 number shifted me
around and I didn’t have time to wait on hold.
So Where in the World is Wendy Williamson auditorium?

      • zyxomma says:

Wendy Williamson Auditorium is on the University of Alaska, Anchorage campus. The meeting is Monday. Hope that helps.

      • Jeanne Devon says:
