Open Thread – By Any Other Name

One of my very favorite Alaska flowers. Wild roses may not have all the long stems, bi-color fanciness, or ruffled petals of the new hybrid roses, but oh do they give a big sloppy kiss to the olfactory section of the brain… When masses of them are blooming, you can walk through the brush, and be treated to a scent so heady, so sweetly divine, it makes you want to lie down in them and take a nap… with the appropriate body armor of course.

Just got back online-got a nasty notice from the FBI on Saturday that locked my computer off the internet. Came a couple days earlier than expected(not Monday) and demanded 200 bucks cash by MoneyPac from Walmart or they would prosecute me for a host of naughty stuff including malware that could cost me 12 years in prison and over a $100,000. Cost me 58 bicks and change to have the malware removed. I checked out one FBI website that claimed to be able to tell me if I had the malware and I guess that is how I got it. Good to be back on line.

Blessed relief from the heat! Temps back down to the 80’s finally. Went to the air show in Dayton Ohio yesterday. It sure seemed like they were laying on the patriotic propaganda a little thicker than usual. I felt like I was at a tea party gathering. LOL

I have a job interview this Thursday and could use some powerful good thoughts. The pay would be more than double what I was making in retail, it’s in my field and provides healthcare. All good stuff.

Picked edemame for the first time this morning. I’ll make another sauteed vegetable dish with dinner. Hope everyone else is doing well.

Sending tons of “powerful good thoughts”!
So happy too you are getting some cooling in your area.

Busy day in the garden yesterday. I had the usual assortment of sparrows, finches and crows, which are not too exciting, although I always enjoy having company while I’m reading on the patio. However, I did had a few special visitors that made my day.

For the very first time ever, I had a cedar waxwing in the yard, eating the berries from my red osier dogwood bushes. What a pretty bird! I have about 10 of the bushes in my yard that I grew from seedlings. According to my gardening guide books, the berries are supposed to be a good source of food for the birds…in the fall and winter. Clearly the birds in my yard did NOT read the book because the older bushes are usually stripped clean by mid-July!

I hadz a little sad when I realized over the weekend that the baby robins in my climbing rose must have fledged on Friday when I was in the house escaping the heat. I hadn’t seen them practicing their wing-flapping, so I didn’t realize they were quite that old yet. On Saturday, the nest was empty and there was no mama robin squawking at me every time I went onto the patio. Then, last night as I was reading a book outside, I heard one of the babies hollering for dinner under one of the dogwood bushes. Daddy was there, pulling the berries off the branch and feeding them to Junior. 🙂

I also had visits from lots of butterflies, a hummingbird moth (odd looking little creature!) and Itty Bitty Bunny (younger sibling of Baby Bunny). Wow…quite a lot of unexpected company!

Itty Bitty Bunny was in deep trouble tonight.

I had The Chat with him/her just like I’d had with sibling and parents. I reviewed all the Rules for the Garden and explained very clearly that he/she was welcome to any weeds, grasses or assorted shrub leaves and berries in the yard but the vegetable garden was OFF LIMITS to any and all bunnies, large or small.

And ** WHERE ** do you think I found Itty Bitty Bunny tonight???? In the vegetable garden!!!

Fortunately, I was able to scare him/her off before any damage was done but I will clearly need to make the repair of the sagging perimeter fence my top priority for tomorrow morning.

      Kids! They never listen!!!

  4. Ah, lovely photo. When we first moved into our house in 1980 I had a lot to learn about all the plants that were growing. Coming from Kansas, I was just happy that anything was growing all by itself. And one of the things we had were wild roses. They were lovely. But at some point we hired someone to do some landscaping and my wild roses disappeared. I miss them.

    Lovely photo!
I made a rose petal jelly out of these roses once. The fragrance was heavenly and the color turned a beautiful dark pink.
When we moved to Anchorage many years ago we were told that this rose was the only one that grew here. We now have over 2 dozen varieties growing around the house.

Those deliciously fragrant roses are not just Alaskan. We have them here in NY, too. When the blooms are gone, the rose hips make a nice tea, and they’re loaded with Vitamin C.

Mudpuppies, you’ve probably heard by now that many computers are infected with malware that could shut down an internet connection tomorrow. To check the status of your connection, visit:

http://www.dns-ok.us in the States, and http://www.dns-ok.ca in Canada. There are other check-up sites available, and a quick visit is all it takes to find out your connection is good.

Jeanne – this site is officially been declared real and permitted to be read by our very own State’s orifice, The Ear. Congratulations. At least they didn’t put a white piece of paper over the link (a very inside, inside, inside gassy joke).
