Introducing.. I Heart The Mudflats.

Hey Mudpuppies! Snoskred here with an exciting announcement.

When AKMuckraker was “outed” many mudpuppies searched for ways to show their support of both AKMuckraker and The Mudflats. For many of us, the usual outlets did not feel sufficient to express what the community means to us.

The forum staff talked about it, and the idea for I Heart The Mudflats was born.

I Heart The Mudflats is a new blog, separate from The Mudflats. It provides an opportunity for mudpuppies to guest blog in many different ways. The blog will not be written by any one person – it will be written by all of us as a community.

I Heart The Mudflats

The I Heart The Mudflats site looks very different to The Mudflats – for example, the colors are totally different, we have two columns in the sidebar- we chose to do that deliberately so no mudpuppy would get confused.

Over the past week, we have posted some content so that you will have plenty to read when you visit the new site.

Moose Nuggets – Hungry? You’ll love this post.

I *heart* Mudflats, Now With 50% More Ash! – Every day we learn something new!

Mwnt loves Mudflats – No, that isn’t a mistype, that is Welsh!

Mooses Heart Mudflats! – We know we heart mooses, but is the feeling mutual?

A Blog for All Seasons – The Alaska/DC Connection

A Real Mudpuppy – Boots and all!

Sneak Peak – 5 Faves – Taking you behind the scenes of The Mudflats, here are the top 5 most linked to websites in the Skype “Unofficial Moderator Chat”. Yes, we do have fun as well as do actual community organizing. πŸ™‚

Forty Watt Hearts Mudflats – A very creative tribute to AKMuckraker.

Do You Heart The Mudflats? – This post lists the many ways you can contribute to I Heart The Mudflats.

We look forward to seeing the creative submissions mudpuppies will be sending us over the coming months. So y’all come on over and spread the Mudflats love. πŸ™‚

Click here to visit I Heart The Mudflats

P.S. Don’t forget to bookmark the site – AKMuckraker will add a link to the sidebar for your convenience also too!

I’m obviously late with my note, but beautimus new site and very cool idea. A community of mudpuppies is not a bad thing at all…I like “community.” πŸ˜‰

  2. Ripley in CT says:

I have snake stories… I don’t like to tell them because then I’m paranoid for a week! Suffice it to say that I’ve had my share of encounters. ICK.

and I think we all heart mudflats. And AKM. fun fun fun

  3. nswfm CA says:

My mom killed a rattle snake in the side yard when I was five and sis was eight. For YEARS, the three of us didn’t go back to the spot. Like it was haunted or a snake volcano or something.

Twenty years later, when I was in college, our tabby cat cornered another one on the other side near the trash/recycle bins. Since I wasn’t there when it happened, I wasn’t spooked by the ghost of snakes past and got over the ick of the other side of the house.

  4. The Rubber Room Hotel says:

    The new site is great.

All this talk of wolf spiders brigs back a family story that comes up whenever there is a gathering.

When we were kids we used to spend a few weeks a summer in the Michigan Upper Peninsula, in a cabin at Lake Milachocia (sp).
My little brother and I were jumping back and forth between the twin beds ( I think maybe the floor was acid or had alligators) when this huge spider came out from one of the beds. Of course we started screaming at the tops of our lungs, that brought my mother running. She took one look at the spider and grabbed a broom and smacked the broom down on the spider. We all stood there for a minute waiting, and all the sudden the broom which was now laying on the floor started moving. It moved about 2 feet and stopped. That is when the real screaming started now that mom had joined in. The broom stopped moving and we stoop there paralyzed, When all the sudden Dad barged in the door with a look of terror on his face. We all started pointing at the broom, none of us coherent. Dad picked up the broom and there all curled up and dead looking was a spider that with out his long legs didn’t look so bad. My Dad said he thought a bear had come in the cabin as one had been seen prowling the night before.
To this day 40 years later my mother still gets harassed about the broom carrying spider.

And I can’t get enough of the whippet in yellow wellies!

  7. Jamie says:

I cannot believe that someone (ahem) would put that nasty slug sexfest video on iheart.themudflats. Wow! But it is kinda fascinating in a voyeuristic way πŸ™‚ And thanks again for putting my Moose Nuggets Cookies as first post, I am joyfully honored!

  8. Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:

    @ here_in_PA

We don’t have ticks but unfortunately we DO have fleas, at least in my part of the state in southeast. It’s nothing like I’ve seen on the west coast, but during a warm summer (not very often) we can get lots o’ fleas and hornets (and their nests). We had our first nest built under the eaves of a three story house a few years back, and it was a HUGE deal to figure out how to get rid of it! I’m afraid it ended up being kind of a circus getting it down – we finally had to flood it w/ water because nothing else would reach it (w/o spreading poison all over the yard). Then we had really wet, mad hornets with mush on the ground for a nest. Oh that was smart, not! After that, I was happy to have a few cooler and hornetless summers, they scared the crud out of me!

  9. Muppet2 says:

Cool, a Spinoff Blog! I heart Mudflats – that is just the cat’s meow.

I hate spiders. I hate spiders (except daddy long legs)…I hate spiders.

  10. yukonbushgrma says:

Sorry, somehow the post got posted before I intended!

Anyway, the wolf spider not only didn’t retreat — it ADVANCED and proceeded to attack hubby. This sucker was big — about 3 to 4 inches across.

Hubby said it took many, many hits with a 2×4 to finally put an end to it.

Wolf spiders – BIG ICK !!!!

  11. yukonbushgrma says:

    Wolf spiders?

Oh yeah, we had those suckers down in Wisconsin. They loved all the uninhabited, rarely-used places in the house.
Their absolute fave place was the shed where we kept the trash.

One day in the spring, we were finally taking trash to the dump, after a whole winter of storing it. Hubby was busy throwin’ bags into the truck, when all of a sudden he jumped back. Whoa!!! What was THAT!

  12. justafarmer says:

BTW, I’ve seen full-grown men loggers come screaming out of the woods with a racer (allegedly) right on their heels.

  13. justafarmer says:

ha! here in Appalachia we have the mythical “blow viper” but also the very real racer snakes. I’ll take a spider any time (I can outrun a spider, hahahaha)!

  14. here_in_PA says:

LOL, I’d rather run into a spider web than a big fuzzy brown spider, like the one I killed in my basement, think they call them wolf spiders. YUCK. They really go CRUNCH when ya kill ’em.

  15. here_in_PA says:

Thats one thing about alaska, they may have musquitos but they don’t have a lot of the bugs as down here. NO snakes, ‘cept them ice snakes. NO fleas nor tics.

  16. justafarmer says:

crap…here in Kentucky it was below freezing a few nights ago…today was almost 90 and tonight I am inundated with June bugs…yuck!
OTOH, I love the new site; thanks the the heads up Snoskred!

  17. Snoskred says:

I have to say I always thought the scariest thing you could run into while walking through a forest was a spider web, but after watching the slug video I now know I was wrong about that.. πŸ™‚

I love the end, also too. What if they land head first? OUCHY! I thought sex was supposed to cure the headache, not cause one.. lol πŸ˜‰

  18. TiredMom says:

    Great idea, great site!

  19. Karin in CT says:

    The naration was hilarious!

I just can’t stand creatures that don’t have fur, except for frogs and toads and tiny lizzards.

And for all you Red Sox fans–Sweet sweep!!!!!!!!

  20. CO almost native says:

I do not heart the slugs. Yech.

The site is fun, though. also. too.

  21. Deep Blue says:

OK, having watched the slug video a couple of times, I must say I think it’s worth it for the humorous narration. And the neon.

  22. Karin in CT says:

Sorry, I couldn’t watch the slug thing. Way too gross! I hate slugs and I hate snakes.

Wow…loved the Passive/Aggressive note blog. Might have a note to submit…thanks to my husband…lol

We’ve already got several new 5 faves submissions from mudpuppies – I am hugely looking forward to receiving more of them because I always run out of websites to visit during the day, there is no better resource for websites than like-minded mudpuppies! πŸ˜‰

Of course, there are a few links that we cannot post in good company which is unfortunate, because there on youtube we found some really terrifying videos involving The Leopard Slug which has had the mods rofling for a couple of weeks now.. πŸ˜‰

however these are not g rated at all, and also the narrator uses bad language.. so I really can’t link to it..

So I am not linking to it but if you are curious and have a good sense of humor and you are willing to note that I warned you re the non-g rating and also too the bad language I am telling you that if you search on youtube for The Leopard Slug it should be the first video by davelittler1 and I am also saying do not be eating or drinking while watching this and make sure your kids are far, far away, possibly in bed asleep. πŸ˜‰

Oh, I am totally going to be spending eternity in a dark fiery place for mentioning this.. πŸ™‚

  26. WOW- it is huge, lovely, a true community!

Hard to be off topic also too.

  27. Snoskred says:
