Open Thread – Storm

The winds, predicted to hit 110mph up here on the mountain tonight, are making quite the racket outside. Thus far the power is holding up (obviously), the animals look a bit concerned, and I’m having a glass of delicious wine with this aria from Bellini’s “Norma.”

Back when dumbass dubya was making a mockery out of the most powerful office in the world,Natalie Maines,of the Dixie Chicks, told concert goers in Britain that she was ashamed that dubya was a Texan, like Natalie herself. Country music stations and fans and rwnj went freaking bananas about that comment. The “Chicks” were banned from airplay and country music telly. They can’t get any airplay today. Then comes Hank. You know-Williams Junior, the heir apparent to his dad’s music legacy. Twice,at least,in recent weeks he has called for hatred of the Muslim Potus Obama. He did so at the Iowa State Fair and had a crowd of 8500 cheering for him. Why does he still get radio and telly airplay? I realize country music is considered a more conservative venue, but the hypocrisy is absolutely stunning and it reeks to high heaven. Libs are always accused of being politically correct. When do we label rwnj as political hypocrites?

    • Lacy Lady says:

I am still ticked that the Iowa State Fair had Hank Williams play at the fair. He did the same thing last year. He should have been banned then. Also ticked at the Iowa State Fair board for allowing that “cast a corn” thing. The Iowa Fair is for all of us Iowans—-not political junkies.
The FBI shut up Ted Nugent. time to shut up Hank Williams.
They think they are Americans—-I have another name for them.

Or the people who have paid their dues.

Jesse Ventura was on Pierce Morgan tonight. Hope everyone can catch the show’s repeat tonight.
He told something about 911 that I had never heard before, and I thought I had heard it all.
True or False? I don’t know
Ventura told Pierce that the BBC reported the second building being hit and going down, 7 mins before it happened. WOW!!!!

I heard another storm is coming in Tuesday night….

  9. slipstream says:

Wind gust of 120 in Bear Valley at 2:00 this morning. That’s quite refreshing.

    • Alaska Pi says:

Did you wear some extra hair foo-foo to keep your curls in place?

      120frickinmph?!
I watched the roof peel off our house and cut the fence into toothpicks in winds like that when I was 8 yrs old. I thought it was kinda cool to watch – didn’t like it much though when we had to leave because the rain came in where the roof used to be 🙂

      • slipstream says:

slipstream does not live in Bear Valley. Too many bears. And Bear Valley is well known for wind. In Jill Fredston’s book “Rowing to Latitude” she writes of her house there, and how she could tell when the wind hit 130 — the water would be sucked out of the toilets.

slipstream lives in Eagle River. Highest gust near my house was a balmy 43 MPH. Some branches down, some rain.

But the river is up a foot and a half since yesterday . . . may be time to go rafting again.

        • Alaska Pi says:

          🙂
it’s all “the big city” to me.
think I will have to go look at a map .
43mph is indeed in the “balmy” range.
hereabouts, 55-60 is oh-heck, 65-75 is rocks in your pockets to keep your feet on the ground, over 75 starting to be suck skylights out of the roof, flip boats off trailers, pick gravel up and shatter windows, snap tops out of spruce, throw barge containers in the channel kind of wind and just generally irritating.

  10. Lacy Lady says:

I listen to all the “”political” shows on Sunday morning. I am sick of these Republicans running down our President. What has happened in all these countries around the world is Obama’s fault??????
If Rommney is elected he will have his finger on the RED button. God help us!

    • Lacy Lady says:

      Heard on CNN this morning.

      http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/09/16/israeli-leader-says-iran-is-20-yards-from-nuclear-bomb/

Sounds a lot like Rommney speaking?

    • Carol says:

when Romney and Ryan decry President Obama’s failure of leadership (or whatever garbage/verbage they use), they NEVER remember 9/11/2001, when there was the attack on American soil, not attacks in other countries. The Republicans didn’t do much leadership then or when we went into Iraq. Going into Iraq was one of the greatest recruiting situations for AlQuaeda there was.
We need to campaign for President Obama like he was 3 points behind. Now that I’ve said that, I’d better go look at the news as I did a moratorium on news for my sanity this weekend.

  11. StElias says:

Well, we lucked out. At least for now, 7:20 AM Sunday.

Looks like the deep low headed a lot more north than east than they anticipated, so the center is now over land and moving deep into the interior. As with any hurricane once over land the pressure increases and the intensity diminishes. What they were worried about is that it would move more in a north easterly direction and joined up with a high to the southeast. Since low pressure areas (big ones are called hurricanes or typhoons) rotate counterclockwise and high pressure areas (normally good weather) rotate clockwise and we have had a big high near the top tip of the panhandle their winds could have combined forces.

Anyway, we are pretty much calm here but receiving consistent but moderate rain. My old home town, Cordova, looks like it might be getting hammered with some strong winds though and they are definitely receiving real heavy rain.

    • UgaVic says:

Us here on the east side of Bristol Bay got some of the winds last night and still more today that are whipping things along pretty well.

Houses are shaking, critters are staying close and heavy equipment is parked to keep other more precious items safe.

Glad it will not be as bad as predicted.

  12. Alaska Pi says:

AKM- the forecast is for winds to intensify through the morning there. hoping you and everyone else there stay safe and sound whether you lose power or not.
as long as the power is on, more music like this is called for !

  13. Kath the Scrappy says:

Oh, that was beautiful! Thx AKM, hope your lights stay functioning!

On a more political note, a YT that needs to go viral:

My favorite soft spoken commentator Thom Thurman makes some excellent points. I remember telling my Sis, while I was angry at Obama’s compromising BS stances, I told her “if I wanted to vote for a Republican, I would have VOTED for a Republican!!!” We both hope/think that Obama himself may have learned a lesson, which is the obstructionists will never compromise, all they want (to heck with the needs of our Country) is to boot him out of office. Hence the 2010 shellacking – yes I did vote but so many Progressives just stayed home.

Food for thought in this YT, & yes I do remember the odd/even days of being able to buy gas back then depending on the number listed on our license plate:

1980: So the question for Progressives is…was it worth it?

With November looming, the fate of the Obama Presidency hangs in the balance. Billions of dollars are being bundled to be spent against him. Voter suppression ID laws are kicking his voters off the rolls. And Republicans in the House are sabotaging his`2 economic recovery. Right now – there’s a chance that this election will be a replay of 1980.

Barack Obama could be Jimmy Carter. And I’m telling you right now that it’s up to us – it’s up to Progressives to make sure that doesn’t happen. We’ve seen this movie before.

Mikey gets a magazine for free called ‘The Iowa Sportsman”. In this month’s issue is an interesting tale of what lead (from guns or fishing tackle) is capable of doing to wildlife that aren’t killed outright by being shot or just happen to ingest heavy metal into their digestive tracks.
There is a project ongoing in Iowa called Save Our Avian Raptors (S.O.A.R.),a non-profit organization that specializes in tending to sick and/or injured raptors. The founder is Kay Neumann of Dedham,Iowa. The article explains the damages done to birds that ingest lead. As of right now I don’t have a link to this article.
In the same article are excerpts from a letter to Iowa guv Braindead from 2011,asking the guv to ignore his Natural Resources Commission decision to ban lead shot for dove hunting, with the usual comments about lack of scientific proof that lead causes harm,etc.. You can find that here http://www.nrahuntersrights.org/Article.aspx?id=5289 I have a link to the SOAR website with facts and figures that show what lead fragments in carcasses and processed meat look like. That link will be in comment post

http://www.soarraptors.org/HuntLeadFree.html If you got some time this is rilly good reading. For the record this is not a solicitation for funds for the site. I just found this place today.

    • Lacy Lady says:

I don’t know why anyone would want to shoot doves. As far as I know, they just shoot them just for that alone. Not a game bird like Pheasants, ducks & etc. These birds have always been protected until recently. People that shoot them are not what I would call “sportsmen”.
Correct me if I am wrong.

      • Lacy Lady says:

You can read about Gov. Branstad on the dove hunting bill here.
So glad that his son can now have something to shoot. — Target practice?
Not everyone in Iowa is happy over this century old bill being changed.

        • mike from iowa says:

Any ideas what happened to that other, fine upstanding little Braindead criminal-Eric? Last I remember he was headed for military-or was it reform school. Dad must be so proud. People who shoot doves are supposed to eat them. Like quail, there ain’t much to a dove except the breast. Between you and me,if these birds were endowed by their creator the same fashion as Dolly Parton, they would be featured at Hooter’s and not for consumption.

          • Lacy Lady says:

Ms Alaska Pi-you might find this interesting,if you haven’t seen it before. Imagine a rwnj, wholly owned subsiiary of the Koch Bros, rethuglican guv calling a judge he disagrees with a “liberal activist judge”. Why I never….

    • Alaska Pi says:

Mikey- I needed that laugh 🙂 thanks!
Mr Walker and his minions almost have to say such stupid things to keep up the smokescreen they’ve set up. You can bet, though, they are relying on “conservative activist ” judges as they scurry around in the background preparing the stay and appeals .
The State Supreme Court there will be interesting to watch- esp. as regards this judge’s ruling about Act 10 violating WI home rule law as regards Milwaukee.
The reach the defendants ( the Gov and state) made there sounds pretty shaky.
I have no idea how strongly WI residents feel about their home rule rights and responsibilities or whether folks understand the distinction between matters-of-local-concern and statewide-interest.
And of course , no idea what the conservative state supreme court there will see there. Is always interesting to me to see state’s rights types defend arbitrary state control of local affairs whilst yapping about federal “intrusion” in “local” state affairs.

      http://host.madison.com/news/local/govt-and-politics/state-seeks-stay-during-appeal-of-collective-bargaining-law-ruling/article_16392934-ff7f-11e1-b0fb-0019bb2963f4.html?comment_form=true

I hope all this knee jerk liberal-activist-judge stuff gets blown back in the faces of Mr Walker and his gang when the questions regarding the US Constitution make it to court if not before.

It is of serious concern to me that the meme about unions being destructive and evil and all that folderol is so widespread in comments by everyday people.
The demonizing of unions by the right has been waaayyy too effective for too long.
It serves multiple purposes for big business to have folks being ticked that union members have managed to keep decent wages while their own have stagnated or dropped .
