Open Thread – Blue Sky & Vitamin D(emocracy)

(brushing grass off arms)

It’s a perfect day in Anchorage.  Warm, but not too warm.  A cloudless sky.  A slight breeze.  And I’ve come to a conclusion.

There are few things in life quite so wonderful as lying in the grass on a warm spring day with a dog and a kid, looking at this:

~~~The Sky Over Anchorage at 3:50pm~~~
~~~The Sky Over Anchorage at 3:50pm~~~

The only things that interrupted that amazing blue vista were an occasional recreational aircraft heading in the direction of Seward, and a twig-carrying magpie working to put the finishing touches on the summer abode.

After a long cold dark winter, you’ll have to forgive me if I don’t post too much content this weekend.  Your blogger will be soaking up some much needed Vitamin D.

And speaking of Vitamin D (or Vitamin Democracy as Shannyn Moore likes to call it) don’t forget to tune in to her show today on KBYR700am  at 5pm Alaska time.  You can turn on your radio, point it out the window and get a double dose of Vitamin D.  Or for those of you who can’t, you can stream it live HERE.  It is SURE to be a lively show today.  Last one before the mayoral election.  Trust me, you don’t want to miss this one.

I’ll check back later.

    Thank you crystalwolf for posting that.
    Just on the odd chance that they disappear I have links to all those press releases (and archived them) that the Governor has issued via her website (aka the state of alaksa governors website) that could and should be considered ethically questionable.
    These are their titles on the website:

    Latest Complaint Deemed Outrageous
    Alarming New Development in Alaska Politics

    Politics Cloud Judgment in Final Week
    from Political Adversaries of Governor

    Latest Bogus Ethics Complaint

    Governor to Turn Over Findings

    Bible Week

    The last one is from June 2007 but those prior to the “bible week” one are from July 2008 to April 2009, and show the change in behavior since the election took place. All of these are still currently available on the state governors website. You simply need to go to the top of the front page, click on the link that says “newsroom” and it will bring up the most current press releases. At the bottom of this first page it shows “News Archive >”, and if you click on that it takes you to archival press releases. At the bottom of each of the following page it shows “next 100 listings” and you simply click on that link to go to the next listings.

    Nope, but a good guess. I could have mentioned there are no mountains here but that might have been too much of a giveaway. Curiously enough though there are a few places in Papua New Guinea that geologically would almost be equivalent to what we are working on here. Big difference in age though.

    Thanks for playing.

    #82 -83 the problem child IS MY NAME!

    Yep, over the years I have spent time in Columbia, Venezuela, Brasil, Peru and Argentina, but mostly in Peru and Brasil. I have also worked all over Africa and to a more limited extent in Europe and Asia and of course N. America, mainly in Canada. I have never worked in Australia or Indonesia but I have passed through in the process of hiring sub-contractors or buying special equipment like cyclone plants and sortex machines. So yes I have been around a bit.

    And yes I am a man of the world, no particular place is really all that special in enough respects to warrant what I would call patriotism. All you have to do to realize that we are one world is look at any of the earthrise photographs from the Apollo missions to the moon, or if you really want a jolt, earth images from Voyager or Viking, or any of the deep space missions that looked back at where they came from.

    The earth is vast but small, and all we have. We should treat it accordingly.

    Best wishes….

    From Daily Kos
    “There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.” -Kung Fu Monkey

    ADN’s EAR reports:
    RUMOR DU JOUR … The governor is apparently going to New York to push canned salmon at a “global seafood tasting” event at Alaska House, a non-profit arts and culture center in SoHo. It’s “a private event and is not open to the public,” says the Web site, but Ear got an invitation so it can’t be that classy.

    ADVERTISEMENT
    Anyhow, the grapevine immediately began spreading claims that Sarah plans to sign a book contract while she’s in NYC.

    Darlings, get real. She’s already got several full-time jobs — governor, wife and cheering section to Todd, mom with four children still at home, including a baby with special needs and not counting the grandson. She’s got at least two homes to run, 14 departments to supervise, money to raise for the national conservative movement, cable talk show hosts to chat up and a million glad-handing events to attend. There’s no way she could possibly have time to write a book.

    Right?
    ****************
    And this is the place she going to!

    CALENDAR

    To celebrate its grand opening, Alaska House, New York is hosting a series of exhibitions and programs to raise awareness about climate change in the Arctic and its impact on Alaska Native peoples.

    Global Seafood Tasting Event: May 8

    Co-hosted by the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute, this event will showcase canned Alaskan salmon distrubuted in the United Nations’ Alaska Canned Salmon Global Food Aid Program for schoolchildren, diaster relief, and food-for-work and maternal/child health projects. Wine pairings will accompany tastings of various recipes featuring the salmon.

    This is a private event and is not open to the public.

    Derby winner’s owner has ties to Alaska bribery scandal

    http://www.mcclatchydc.com/251/story/67394.html

    By Richard Mauer | Anchorage Daily News
    ANCHORAGE — If it weren’t for the plea deal that his dad, former Veco chief executive Bill Allen, made with federal prosecutors, Mark Allen might not have been in the winner’s circle Saturday at the Kentucky Derby, celebrating the victory of his thoroughbred Mine That Bird and a $2 million purse.

    Bill Allen, in pleading guilty in 2007 to three counts related to his central role in the Alaska public corruption scandal, won immunity from federal criminal charges for Mark Allen.

    Mine That Bird, a 50-to-1 long-shot, stunned the racing world when he came from behind and won the Derby, America’s premier thoroughbred event. Mark Allen’s Double Eagle Ranch of Roswell, N.M., along with a neighbor, Leonard Blach, purchased the gelding last year. The racing Web site BloodHorse.com said they paid $400,000 after the horse had initially sold for $9,500 as a yearling.

    Hopefully we will get a long pleasant summer in return for the wet and dreary winter/spring.

  21. sauerkraut says:

    @#65 austin – poor Sarah darling… so many ethics complaints and at such a cost. Too bad her mouthpieces never mention that one of those complaints was filed by… Sarah Palin! as a way to counter-act a very credible and actionable fiasco known as Troopergate.

  26. Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:

    Oh, and another thing that Alaskans commonly do – TESTING questionable equipment on camping or long hiking trips – I need to STOP doing that! Next time I’ll probably die if I take the stuff that was in the “garage sale” pile because it didn’t work quite right. But it’s been there so long, you forget what didn’t work right, and it looks perfectly good and should be USED! Our memories are so short…

    And now, that cr@p is going in the garbage pile before I accidentally put it in the “sell to some other unsuspecting food” pile again! That is, unless I meet someone I really DON’T like who wants my snowshoes and backpack.

    @ Say NO to Palin in Politics – Thank you for coming back! I missed you!

    I can attest to the incredible weather in Juneau, also, too, and the propensity of many Alaskans to forget the sunscreen or trust one that is a couple of years old. I hobbled in late last night from an overnight camping trip, with very bright red sunburn and a sliver in my foot. My foot that slid into snowshoes and tromped fifty miles through “break up” in the Juneau meadows. Not really fifty miles, but it felt like it. At one point, we had to cross a beaver dam on snowshoes – with a drop off on the left into about 6 feet of freezing black water and on the right, a steep bank leading to more banks with water pouring into it from the beaver dam. I saw, I crossed, I lived!

    The dogs are “broken” today so maybe I’ll slather on (new) sunscreen and try to do some yard work in the “back 40” where the skunk cabbage is gleefully shooting up and will take over the whole back yard if not tackled soon. They start as these cute little yellow spears, then overnight while you are blissfully unaware of their plan to take over the world, they turn into huge plants w/ broad leaves and march around calling up their buddies and the next thing you know, the yard is gone!

    Then again, maybe I’ll just take a nap for awhile and think about the yard work later!

    OK one more time, If it doesn’t work I’m off to bed and I’ll see you folks soon.

    THE WRECK OF THE SARAH L. PALIN
    (sung to the Gordon Lightfoot song “The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald ”)

    The legend lives on from the North Slope on down
    To the town they call Sandpoint, Idaho
    The Heath’s one would say, had a daughter that day
    Why they kept her, I must say, “I don’t know”

    They loaded up the truck and they tested their luck
    When they moved to Wasilla, Alaska
    Sarah enrolled in school and was nobody’s fool
    On the court they called her “Barracuda”.

    In 1982 she left for Honolulu
    Off to Hawaii Pacific College
    She did not last long there nor at anywhere
    In her quest for some meaningful knowledge.

    She finally did see a journalism degree
    After stints at 5 or 6 safety schools
    Sometime in between she was a pageant queen
    Then she worked in TV for KTUU.

    She met up with her fate sometime in ’88
    When her TV career was a failin’
    And everyone knew, as her parents did too
    She would soon be the Bride of Todd Palin.

    Long before she did wed, she conceived in his bed
    That was the end of her abstinency
    While laid out on her back, she gave birth to Lil’ Track
    The result of an unwed pregnancy.

    She was now in a lurch cuz of her right wing church
    But she carried on without a care
    She had a beehive hairdo, but had nothing to do
    That all changed when she became the Mayor.

    She appointed some crooks then she banned some good books
    No one lasted if they weren’t on her team
    Wasilla’s deficit grew, kids fired-up on homebrew
    Not to mention the methamphetamine.

    She became the next Guv and to show the state love
    She proposed to unite remote shore banks
    But once in a bind she politely declined
    To the bridge she said,”Thanks but no thanks”.

    John McCain now you see had to choose a VP
    His campaign was certainly failin’
    He wanted a she that was tres “mavericky”
    So he chose Alaska’s Sarah Palin.

    But poor press reviews of her live interviews
    With Couric and Gibson oft replayed
    Showed she could not spar with the nightly news stars
    Let alone outperform Tina Fey

    The election was lost and poor Sarah was tossed
    From her seat on “The Straight Talk Express”
    She went home and did pose in her new store-bought clothes
    But Alaskans were not now impressed

    She’s no longer a saint due to ethics complaints
    She has nobody left now to wink at
    Her appointees ignored and her actions abhorred
    She’s reduced to shilling for “Arctic Cat”

    She gave Levi some lip about visiting Tripp
    And Todd’s sister is facing some jailin’
    But paternity laws might be the final straw
    For the wreck known as Sarah L. Palin

  46. nswfm CA says:

    That wasn’t the one. It was a Gordon Lightfoot song.

  49. nswfm CA says:

    Wait! Come back! It’s night owl shift!

  50. lynnrockets says:

    FOUR EYED GIRL
    (sung to the Van Morrison song “Brown Eyed Girl”)

    Hey where did she go,
    Days when the snow came
    Way down in Juneau,
    Playin’ the blame game,
    Winkin’ and a blinkin’, hey, hey
    Oil should be a pumpin’
    With those rimless glasses on and
    Sarah campaign stumpin’, oh,
    My four eyed girl,
    You, my four eyed girl.

    Whatever happened
    To Wooten and Stambaugh
    Did they not toe the line
    Forcing Sarah to let them go
    Standing in her office laughing,
    Hiring her old friends from school
    Fibbin’ and a lying
    Playin’ citizens as fools, were you
    My four eyed girl
    You, my four eyed girl

    Do you remember when she used to sing…
    Ya Betcha, Ya Betcha, Ya Betcha, Ya Betcha, Ya
    Just like that
    Ya Betcha, Ya Betcha, Ya Betcha, Ya Betcha, Ya
    La Ti Da

    She has lots of legal bills
    And they make her whine and moan
    She’ll be turnin’ to booze and pills
    Unless she gets a loan
    Someone’s gotta help her, Lord
    Could it be the good Ol’ SarahPac
    Defense fund could save her ass
    And fill her wallet too, oh you
    My four eyed girl
    You, my four eyed girl

    Do you remember when she used to sing…
    Ya Betcha, Ya Betcha, Ya Betcha, Ya Betcha, Ya
    Ya Betcha, Ya Betcha, Ya Betcha, Ya Betcha, Ya
    Sha la la la la la la la la la…

    http://corcholat.com/!BT8
    Enjoy!
    And to Alaskan mudpups enjoying the sun…. You need your Vit D! 😀
    I have a question from a knowledgeable mudpup…Are the suns rays more intense there b/c of where you are? During FE dog, I got a pic on a web cam (it was the day of then end of the race) and the sun(light) in the pic was a straight line down!!!!! It was noon and I’m thinking b/c the lat/long you guys are when you get sun its more direct. This pic from a web cam showed a straight line, straight down! It was surreal. Anyone know?

    Blue Skies…smilin’ at me…will go to sleep with a lovely song in my head. Dreary weather here but Spring is trying to sprong.

    Amazing what a clear blue sky post from AKM can do. Thank you, AKM you are not only a truly talented writer but good for the soul (o:

    Krubozumo Nyankoye–I’m thinking Indonesia, but I could be off a bit. I suspect Asia due to the geckos though.

    It was BEAUTIFUL here today, and it got up to 75! (according to Weather Underground). I think the color of my skin would attest to that! We went to the Blessing of the Fleet/Fishermen’s Memorial (saw another mudpuppy there!) and then worked in the yard the rest of the day. I battled the raspberries and am not sure who actually won… It’s due to cloud up and rain by tomorrow, so hopefully we didn’t burn through our whole summer this past week…

    It was 66 in Prescott AZ today. Enjoyed every minute of the warmth and the intermittent sunshine. Planted grapes…for vino..

    @Krubozumo Nyankoye
    I can’t see Polaris either, but that might have something to do with all the wet stuff falling from the sky here…
    ;>

  63. ChiCat says:

    By the way, the weather around Boston was nice enough to hang my laundry out to dry (for the first time ever!). And we hung out outside too. Not as sunny or warm as I would have liked, but I’ll take it!

  64. ChiCat says:

    Krubozumo Nyankoye, assuming you meant “fútbol” not American football, I’m guessing that Big Pete is close; if not northern Brazil, maybe Columbia or Venezuela? Unless you are on the other side of the planet in Africa or Indonesia? Not too familiar with popular sports over there!

  65. Aussie Blue Sky says:

    @ Krubozumo Nyankoye
    I thought you told us recently that you were somewhere in South America. Other than that, you could easily be at the north end of my tropical island paradise. 😉

  66. Blue_in_AK says:

    And I’m down here in Santa Monica where it’s gray and cool. Wouldn’t you know? Hang onto that good weather until I get back on Thursday. I’m enjoying my new grandson, but I’ll be happy to be home. 🙂

  67. BigPete says:

    Krubozumo Nyankoye @15

    Howsabout Northern Brazil?

    Ripley,
    I identified I was a Mudpup thanking AKM for the link to her show.

  72. sauerkraut says:

    re ripley at #8, above.

    That ELO stacato beated tune just doesn’t sit well on a nice clear day so allow me to suggest an alternative: Tommy Shondell and Crystal Blue Persuasion (ah haaaaa) found here: http://run4chocolate.wordpress.com/2009/01/30/crystal-blue-persuasion/

    Krubomuzo Nyankoye; am curious about where you are, and I am guessing this spontaneously, and didn’t consult with google. The geckos made me think of Australia, maybe the south Pacific islands somewhere. Sounds like an interesting place. It’s been sunny on the northeast atlantic coast today, but unusually cooler temps than normal. And our leaves aren’t out yet.

  75. mde says:

    AKM – You need to clean your lens, lower right corner. :o)

  76. Lori in Los Angeles says:

    tee hee hee, Shannyn smacked down Dan Fagan (who just called in to her radio show). Said it is Sullivan’s inability to “recall” the bar incident that is troubling and also compared Sullivan to Bush and Palin.

    AKPetMom – It’s Derby day……….maybe stick your umbrella in one of these.

    Yup, an utterly gorgeous day today. Have to grab the gorgeous days as they come–I remember hubby’s boss told him, when he first started, that he was urged to take a day off when it was beautiful and warm outside, because it was rare. What a boss! We spent the entire day outside, raking & working in the yard, and I am now sunburned. Nice to know you can get sunburned in AK…

  79. Krubozumo Nyankoye says:

    Might as well chime in with some local comparison. Well past dark here, the
    length of day does not change much with the seasons, only about 45 minutes either side of 12 hours. Rained hard here this afternoon then cleared off later, cooled things down some but it is still warm by your standards 35 (C) and about ten minutes til midnight. Tomorrow will be hot, no forecast here we just take what comes. The air is usually very clear but at the end of dry season there is a lot of burning and that messes things up quite a bit. There is also a saw mill here that makes a lot of smoke at times, usually at night when you can’t see it. Plenty of dust, it pervades everything. It is similar in color to burnt orange for those of you familiar with paint names. That is because it is made of the same stuff, iron oxides for the most part, primarily goethite, and hematite. Tomorrow will be our day off, there will be a football game in the afternoon. Tomorrow night we will do the regular ritual “dinner out” for the main staff here, their wives and children. We go to the one local eatery that is all outside but under a huge pavilion, beside a swamp. The locals call it a lake but it is really a swamp. For that reason we all call the place the “Mosquito”. I don’t even know its actual name. This past week marked the 5th anniversary of our work here so there is extra reason to celebrate. The bats and insects are out in force tonight and as I am sitting on the patio I am aware of them both as well as the numerous geckos visible on the two walls and ceiling. My two companions are carrying on a vigorous conversation of which I only understand a little. They constantly chide me because after all this time I have learned just the rudiments in badly ungrammatical terms of their language, I just smile and tell them I have enough trouble with english.

    Anyone care to speculate where I am?

    Just a clue bonus, I can’t see Polaris at all from here.

    Cheers,

    Sweet dreams AKM, please turn off the weather widget! 🙂

    What a beautiful day! I’m jealous. Spend as much time outdoors as possible. This evening fire up the firepit and stay out til bedtime. We here on the east coast are looking at rain for the next week so I will be with you in spirit.

  84. Closet Mudpup says:

    Ah, spring in AK – (almost) makes me wish I were still flying up there.

    No lying on my small patch of grass here in AZ either. I have a compact with the local cottontails – I water; they trim and fertilize. And they do an exceptional job of both!!

  85. curiouser says:

    AKM, Gotta smile at the thought of you taking that photo. Love your whimsy. Hope all you Alaskans enjoy the sunshine.

    Catching up on the previous thread, I was getting all worked up. Now, I’m gonna think blue skies and sunny days and try to forget about the nasty Repub response to Souter’s retirement.

  86. Ripley says:

    Here’s the perfect song for you AKM….it’s the first one I thought of when I saw this blog.

    A real feel good song for this time of year, with the crystal blue sky.

  87. Say NO to Palin in Politics says:

    Capture away AKpetmom and AKM and all Alaskans!………Enjoy!

    I’d love to lay in the grass, but no way here, uh huh, I’d pay a price with miserable chigger bites and most likely loads of seed ticks and bigger, yuck.

    I’ll envision it though, that is, the nice sunny day layin in the soft green grass part.

    By the way, for anyone not in AK, these are the days we live for, and after last summer (very wet and 55 for months), we all feel that we have to capture these precious warm blue sky days and store them away in case the summer goes that way it did last year.
    And on that note, I’m going to take the laptop out to the adirondack chair and listen to Shannyn in the sunshine, with an umbrella in my drink, enjoyed with a great big “cheddie braut” w/sauerkraut and potato salad and Bush’s beans….
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Sounds good 🙂 ENJOY! I will be listening to Shannyn too …. 🙂
    I think that our wet and dreary summer of 2008 was because Mother Nature was crying tears of sadness because of McCain’s decision to name she-who shall-not-be-named as his running mate.
    Just sayin’….remember, you can’t fool Mother Nature!
    You go girl! Out here in Wasilla town I’ve had to retire back into the cool shady house as I’ve gotten too warm while doing yard work! (fanning hands and telling hubby I’m a little “perklemt” [sp].
    I’m actually eyeballing the little kiddie pool in the driveway and thinking perhaps it’s time to empty it, clean it and fill it back up! Of course, it wouldn’t be immediately ready for immersion as the water from the hose is still about 45 degrees (if that) but the idea sounds pretty inviting right now. Maybe I will clean it and refill it today and after a few days it might be just right.
    Enjoy your weekend.
