I Voted and Brian Approved.

I voted on my way home from work today.  And for those of you who haven’t done it yet, you’ve got two hours left.  I asked the poll worker how the turnout was today.  He said, “Well….fair.  It’s picking up a little now, though.”  There was one person in a booth, and about 4 or 5 that came in with me.  So I wasn’t bowled over by a huge voter turnout.  But in my neck of the woods, that may be a good thing for Mr. Croft.

I have to say it was a pretty simple ballot.

And I always laugh at the weird pen/spoon hybrid they have in the booths.  Their plan was successful.  No one will ever steal one of those things.

On my way home from voting, just as I rounded the corner on my street, who was standing right on the side of the road?  Brian!  I rolled down my window and took this picture right from my car.

If you’ll remember a few months ago, we were all a little shocked when Brian showed up at my window naked after having dropped his antlers for the season.  You can see just over his eye, that a fresh new set is starting to emerge.  They will be bigger than last year’s when they come in.

So, was this Brian sighting an omen of good luck for the election?  Or perhaps a consolation prize…  We’ll know in a few hours.  And although as of yet, moose do not have the right to vote in Anchorage municipal elections, we all know how Brian feels about Sarah Palin.  And since she said, “Nothing would make [her] happier” than having Dan Sullivan as mayor, I can confidently say that I voted the way Brian would have wanted.

Brian is surely a stately beast.

I need to remember to take my camera in the car with me, so I don’t miss opportunities like this one!

PA roads were the worst I’ve ever been on til then or since. Are they still that bad?
    ______________

Mostly. Farm roads, main roads, interstates. Bridges. Horrible shape.

  3. Annie in NC says:

So sorry for all the Croft Mudpuppies – we in NC know just how you feel (Jesse was in the Senate for a looong time!)

@redwoodmuse “Re: tough love for Spector. oh I agree, I agree. It is as it should be. I’ve never quite forgiven him for his treatment of Anita Hill.”

I suggested Prof Hill for SCOTUS at whitehouse.gov. Very dignified woman.

Although I have no doubts that happens, it is more a problem of apathy, indifference, a lack of concern or the impression that one cannot make a difference, so why bother. This is apparent in any election, in any state, for any position. When we see a 25-30% voter turnout, we fall into one of two camps. We are either the active participant, or the passive observer. The challenge is to get more individuals interested in the outcome. The more the members of the latter camp see no real changes made that directly affect them personally, the more disillusioned they can become. I believe that being informed is the key. The more you know, the better your decisions. Forums/posts/blogs like this one are just now coming into the mainstream. It make take a while longer, but if The Mudflats is any indication of the new direction, we may yet help many more see the light. Call it curiosity. Call it an inquisitive mind. Call it the new drug of the information highway. Whatever you choose, it has only just begun. I see that light. The light of truth.

    End of rant.

ADN has declared Sullivan the winner and next mayor of Anchorage.

WHO WILL BE VOTED OUT NEXT?

  7. Quetzalcoatl says:

Free drinks and bring your car, as long as you fold the silver. lol.

This is too tense. Sullivan better not be around when I get up.

    All the best.

  8. Lainey says:

I’m gonna be mean here for a minute and say that I bet DS promised whoever votes for him gets free drinks at his bar…is that all it takes?

  9. Mach says:

By my estimates, there will be about 42,000 votes cast, which is still only about 22% of the number of registered voters in Anchorage.

  10. justafarmer says:

hang in there…all depends on which precincts haven’t reported yet

  11. strangelet says:

    Argh. 8:54, 57 of 119 precincts, Croft 7360, Sullivan 9817

At this rate, the mayor’s race will be decided by 35,000 voters.

  12. pdx mb says:

I guess was 7 precincts. Now it’s 13 precincts and Croft 899 to DS 937. Gonna be a nailbiter.

  13. pdx mb says:

Did I miss something? ADN says that’s 6% of precincts reporting… I know w/out too much mental gynmastics that 70 of 119 is way more than 6%!

I dunno, redwoodmuse… specter’s done a good job for PA. Harry Reid done screwed us pennsyltucky democrats tonite. And we ain’t gonna forget.

Guess I can understand how you feel. Still, it seems the height of hubris to change teams and expect to still be the captain – to mangle my metaphors — especially when you make it clear you still intend to vote your old party line. Seems a wee bit like karma smacked him.

On another note….My former husband and I drove through PA back in 78. Our little Rabbit fell into a pothole so hard it knocked our car top carrier off the car. That trip took us from NC up to NY (Chatauqua) and eventually to western Indiana. PA roads were the worst I’ve ever been on til then or since. Are they still that bad?

There’s no tellin’ where i read this, but the words burned into my brain…

It was Michelle Obama quoted as saying “I’m only as happy as my saddest child”, and as a mother of five, myself, i knew exactly what she meant.

    I bet you do, too.

    (Go Dems!)

  16. pdx mb says:

    That was 70 of 119 precincts reporting…

  18. redwoodmuse says:

anything? at all? I’m waiting too.

We have to wait until the 26th of May to find out about our local recall.. Arrrrrrgggghhhhh.

  19. oregonbird says:

    We’re all waiting… good luck.

  20. justafarmer says:

    YAY for Brian!
And YAY for the whippoorwill who sang tonight in Appalachia to announce that Spring has arrived here!

  21. BahstinBoyo aka Wrangler Tractor Palin says:

I’m here for my fix! It’s 12:15am here on the east coast of FL… the polls have closed now in AK… The suspence is palpable… any local news covering the election up there? A few of us in the lower 48 AND that beautiful 49th island are a tad curious…

    Anybody got anything?

  22. WakeUpAmerica says:

Please counsel Brian about not crossing “Kill, baby, kill” Palin’s path, especially now that she will have that new assault rifle.

  23. JBDC says:

polls are closed! what’s the early prediction?

  24. leenie17 says:

Yayyy Brian…indeed a very handsome moose!

Although, much to my chagrin, there are no Brians where I live, ask any of my students (kindergarten, first and second grade) what my favorite animal is and they will enthusiastically respond, “Moose!” (I have them trained well!) And they often answer in two languages simultaneously…anyone want to venture a guess as to how THAT happens? When I arrive in their classroom, they immediately check my socks to see which of my extensive collection I am wearing. Although I have a wide selection of designs and critters, more often that not there are happy moosies frolicking across my feet.

I bet Brian would have voted for Croft if he could figure out how to grip one of those spoon-pen thingies.

  25. Diane says:

    My groundhog is back.
And my youngest has a job(finally) and is moving to Philadelphia. I now can get the scoop on Specter!
All three out of the house and grown up. Only one has been downsized and is looking for a job.
I am sad tonight but happy. I know a mother’s work is never done, but the are now all independent, good, kind considerate adults. Democrats too!

  26. sauerkraut says:

I dunno, redwoodmuse… specter’s done a good job for PA. Harry Reid done screwed us pennsyltucky democrats tonite. And we ain’t gonna forget.

  27. sauerkraut says:

I’ll do the eye-crossing for ya, Aussie!

Maybe AKM shoulda backed Brian up to the back of Sullivan. …

  28. Why didn’t my precinct have the machines that suck down the ballot? They just had this big gym bag that said MOA on it and you slid your ballot right in. Anyone know what’s the deal with that?

  29. redwoodmuse says:

@Annie in NC – Re: tough love for Spector. oh I agree, I agree. It is as it should be. I’ve never quite forgiven him for his treatment of Anita Hill.

And in my corner of the world today, I voted to recall a county commissioner who gutted the road/transportation budget and the IT budget, fired the Transportation Department head (and laid off 22 of the road crew) and the IT head and then appointed himself as the head (he was already the liaison for both of those departments). He argued against the recall because it would ‘cost the county money it could ill afford to lose’. The decision was made without any public hearing (a legal requirement) and coded words on the agenda so that no one knew what was being referred to.

We flood here pretty badly in the winter. One week after this idiot fired the director and cut 22 positions on the road crew, an elderly man drowned to death when his car got caught in a biiiiiiig puddle crossing the road. With a full crew the road would have been blocked off to traffic. Idiot’s response…condolences to the family. No other comment.

    Palinitus…it must be contagious.

    Yikes! (biting nails)

  36. Cynamen Winter says:

Good get AKM, on both accounts….and I too have been known to do drive-by shootings as well…through the lens, that is. 🙂

Way to show some tough love for the newest Dem!

  38. Brian looks wonderful! Here’s hoping for Croft to win!

  39. Aussie Blue Sky says:

Good luck to Heather and everyone else who’s worked so hard for the two campaigns. I have everything crossed except my eyes.

  40. Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:

Brian would have voted for Obama, too, also, just like my dogs. My dogs knew that the First Family just HAD to love dogs, so they told me to vote for Mr. Obama and no shady characters!

  41. bubbles says:

BRIAN HAS COME HOME!!!! what a guy. thanks akm…b

  42. Deep Blue says:

What time do polls close? Should I try to stay awake here on the east coast of the US to see who wins?!

  43. anon blogger says:

Just a little reminder from Brian…keep up the good work!

  44. nswfm CA says:

Hope your guy wins. Don’t want sp to be happy.

  45. Gramiam says:

Way to go, AKM!!! Brian is a wise moose.!!

  46. Deep Blue says:

    Good luck Eric Croft!

Our local results in Alexandria, VA today were not as great as we’d hoped. Two Dems were picked off City Council.

Better luck to the Dems in Alaska!!!

  47. Lainey says:

Congrats on voting…it always feels good to exercise your civic duty. I hope things go your way. I wouldn’t want to see the other guy win just because Croft supporters caught some apathy virus.
About Brian…he is very handsome. All moose look alike to me, however. How do you recognize him?…forgive the silly question from a city folk.

  48. Martha says:

Brian can’t be anything BUT a good luck omen! Good luck from me as well.
