A Party’s a Party, No Matter How Small.

rebranding20the20gop1

Oh, don’t we love the drive by cleverness of flyinureye?   I always do a little happy dance when my inbox has a special treat from the Mudflats Graphics Department.

Apparently the only one who thinks Palin and her magic branding iron can turn this shrinking elephant into something other than….a shrinking elephant, is Rush Limbaugh.

Discussing the Republican listening tour conducted by Former Governors Jeb Bush (FL) and Mitt Romney (MA), and House Minority Whip Eric Cantor, radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh said yesterday that they are “embarrassed” by Sarah Palin.

Alaskan progressives, perhaps, have never actually identified with Jeb Bush and Mitt Romney until now.

They “hate” and “despise” the Alaska governor, Limbaugh said, and the “listening tour” is nothing more than “an early campaign event” for the presidential elections of 2012.

Which Palin has now joined.

He went on to call Palin “the most prominent and articulate voice” for American conservatism.

Yes….he did say “articulate.”  You’ll enjoy that one for the rest of the day.

Limbaugh, then, presented himself as Palin’s bodyguard, and attacked her potential rivals for the GOP’s presidential nomination in 2012 (or after).

The mental image is just staggering.    I prefer the image above.

Considering the dregs left in the decimated Grey Old People party, who in his right mind would want to belong to any organization comprising these inarticulate and shrieking dimwits? They have allowed themselves to become as relevant as last year’s news.

    ============
That’s the beauty of being paranoic and cowardly. Crist is physically too close for Limbaugh to take a poke at; he has actual power over the very dirt that the untidy studio sits on. I’ve seen Limbaugh back down to an irate waitress he attempted to molest — one of many — and know he is incapable of taking anyone on face-to-face. He is the ultimate bully; capable of anything when he feels safe, a cringer when its real and personal.

@sandra in oregon–Really? Where did you see this news? Is he going to the canned salmon and wine pairing shindig tomorrow in NYC in GINO’s place? And the WH Correspondents’ Dinner? This isn’t so she can stay in state and pretend like she cares about the flooding, is it?
    —–
The visual images of the flood are too similar to Katrina and out of touch Bush Admin people on their summer escape from the humidity of DC. Freezing, starving people during the winter is more words than photos. She’d look like Condi Rice tryin’ to buy some shoes on 5th Avenue during that time period if she were eating and drinking in SoHo.

  10. honestyinGov says:

Seeing as how Rush lives in Palm Bch and does his radio show from there i am a little surprised that he has not ever said anything about his own GOP Governor Charlie Crist. He talks about everybody in Washington but not his Gov..?
The reason I say that is that Crist was working very closely with Obama after the Stimulus Bill was passed and had those Town Hall meetings. Crist is actually doing his job… But that has never stopped Rush from bashing someone. I would think Rush would not like the fact that Crist was working with Obama and giving him support.

And I read (I think in the Daily Kos) last night that some Conservative groups in Fla. are after Crist because he is ‘ not conservative enough’ and want him out.
it seems a natural that the Conservatives would ask Rush for help….But then being ‘organized ‘ has not been their strong suit lately.

  11. anon blogger says:

OT I watched Keith’s show and Shannyn’s interview. She did an excellent job conveying the governor’s track record on several issues facing Alaskans. She commented on Rush’s support of Palin, as well. Really a good interview!

  12. SMR says:

I don’t know why anyone would think that SP is a shoe-in for reelection. Take a look at the numbers from the last election. She BARELY won. Andrew Halcro grabbed a few Dems and Repubs, but not many. Dems who voted for her thinking that she was going to bring about ethical changes have more than likely seen the light.

I was a registered R, my husband still is. Even though we will be moving out of the country next week, we will still be registered Alaskan voters, and you can count on us voting for anyone other than SP if she tries to run again.

We’re oil company employees. SP has engendered a lot of hard feelings amongst oil company employees in Alaska, and I’d say about 75% of them are republicans. The most conservative Republican friend that I have here in AK, oil company, totally opposed to abortion, very religious — he would not vote for SP if his life depended on it. The old-guard repub family that I married into, guess what only ONE of them voted for the McC/SP ticket. Alaskan Republicans, and I am talking about the republicans who espouse true republican values of fiscal conservatism, small government, etc., have all seen the truth about SP. She will run this state into the ground financially and set back oil interests in the short- and long-term, and the real repubs cannot buy into that. I would not be surprised if she did not even survive a primary, as I suspect that the Alaskan repub party has a candidate waiting in the wings that can take her down. Who knows, it might even be her dear friend Ted.

There is absolutely no reason to believe that all of the republican cash flying around would or will be directed to any local efforts of SP’s. I suspect it will be directed to others and that she will have to dig into her SarahPAC piggy bank.

So, unless someone knows the local Repub party heads and has some very real numbers & info, I don’t believe that SP has a shot at re-election, and don’t believe there’s a bit of info out there that would back that up. She probably knows that, which is why she is cultivating so many outside interests, and it is more than likely that she won’t even take a chance of making herself irredeemable by trying and failing.

  17. MinNJ says:

    @Moose Pucky

Diametrically opposite; cognitive dissonance. WHEEEeeeeeee! The New Republican Party Listening Tour, coming to a town near you! (But Rush says it should be a lecture tour! More WHEEEeeeeeee!)

  18. Lee323 says:

Great work, flyinureye! That “cross brand” may become “cross hairs” for the GOP if Palin’s involved…

Rush is usually wrong about most everything…… but he’s probably right in saying that the “notables” of the party are “embarrassed” by Sarah Palin. Her fall campaign performance and the months since have been filled with embarrassing gaffes and missteps….mirrored by her declining approval ratings in her own state.

As to Rush gushing that she’s the “most prominent and articulate voice ” for American conservatism…..I doubt whether he really believes it. It sounds like more of a back-handed jab at the truly educated and intellectual conservatives (like Colin Powell et al). (Besides, Rush only listens to his own voice’s echo….How would he know what “articulate” sounds like?)

Actually, Rush’s endorsement of Palin only magnifies the problem that Palin already has politically….her minority-base appeal. He’s not doing Palin any political favors with respect to the majority of the electorate with his “distinguished” endorsements . Heck….even the Dems are trying to make Limbaugh the de facto leader of the GOP for the obvious politically strategic reasons.

  19. oregonbird says:

We appreciate this blog for its measured tone and the delicate finger waving! And pictures of Brian.

Colin Powell — my odds-on favorite for an Honest Man. The past administration’s attempt to ruin the man’s rep, and their success at keeping him away from presidential elections, seemed tragic to me. However, a possible bright spot is that he was a necessary, historical figure of political butchery that opened the door to President Obama. If he wasn’t already taking a run at 80, I’d be wishing that he was the Republican candidate for 2016. Because we’ve seen that one man can make a difference.

He just has to be pretty.

  20. Nebraska Native says:

I’m with Snoskred on this one. Too many people read the blog for the info and AKM has worked hard to establish street and msm credibility. Snos, I fully agree. This is meant to be a serious political blog. We can all have a little fun at times, (and I am guilty of that myself). In fact that humour in the Mudflats during and after the election was one of the reasons that kept me here. But I think the songs belong elsewhere.

Rush, might have the hots for her, the others, not so much. I think the fact she has lifetime members of the Republican Party…Re`branding after her EPIC FAILURE as the parties FACE of the century foretelling.

Seriously, what money…I would like to see the tallies of SarahPAC and really, if Palin had cash, she would be on a plane right now to New York but she is not, she is seeing the cushy job go POOF also.

  25. MinNJ says:

Colin Powell went to the United Nations and presented a justification, rather poorly in many people’s opinion, of an unjustifiable invasion of Iraq, knowing that it was a done deal already. Ironically, he gave his press conference on that day in front of a COVERED UP painting by Picasso, ‘Guernica,’ which depicted the artist’s interpretation of the bombing of that town by the Nazis before WWII, when Franco was the Fascist dictator of Spain. The painting was deemed too inflammatory by the press and the Bush advisors.

Irony: never understood by the Republican Party.

  26. Moose Pucky says:

Sarah’s really good at winksmanship, eh?

  27. Moose Pucky says:

Palin will win reelection because she has a national party pouring money into any election or fund she wants.

And this money affords lawyers and politicians that divert attention from your pleas of “lies and smears”.

    Ever heard of Troopergate?
That was Texas cash that diverted that train of “lies and smears”.

    Quite effectively I might add.

    Alaska is a Republican state.
    Anchorage is a Republican city.

On topic. Rush Limbaugh’s listeners are not going to help the GOP rebrand; neither will Palin, Romney, and Jeb Bush. This is all a fruitless piece of conservative theater.

In all seriousness, they need more folks like Meghan McCain to rebrand the GOP.
And they need to hang on to the smart, accomplished people like Colin Powell.

Hey, I am all for fun. I am all for the community we have here – this is why I stood up and offered to create the forums and this is why we created the new blog.

This is why I donate considerable amounts of my spare time to help out with the comments section here, dragging people out of the spam bin and flinging trolls.

Don’t mis-interpret what I am saying. Fun = excellent. I’m just saying, can we put it in the right place.

I believe many of us arrived here in the first place because it was a place we could have good discussions about politics and serious topics.

When AKM has worked hard on a post about a serious topic, please respect that – there is always an open thread. Use that for the off topic stuff instead, or go to the forums, or go to the new blog. 🙂

For every one of you saying you want the OT stuff to stay, there is likely to be 10 people who have been put off from commenting by the off topic stuff or the fact that there are too many comments for them to read and half of those were off topic or from the general “vibe” of the comments section. I say this because sometimes those people contact us and let us know.

I like the latest bit where Rush has asked Colin Powell to change parties… Rush dictating to Colin Powell. That’s an interesting position. Colin will, I hope, be the only person not to back down from his anti-Rush statements.

I was a registered Republican for about 20 yrs. Changed my registration to Undeclared after the Palin pick by McLame. I like Obama, and I think he’s a great leader and has much to offer the country. However, if Colin Powell were to step up to the plate and declare himself in the running for 2012 and could get the real Republicans (rather than the rabid base) on board then I could see myself re-evaluating my disenfranchisement from the Republican party.”””””””””

As a fellow ex-Republican,I get your point. If the party is to have a future,it must leave the rabid nutjobs behind, and return to the real core issues. Not the issues from religion, but the political ones that made up the party-small government is not it,fiscally reponible government is,that can mean small,or can mean no waste,no excesses like Bush.Constitution is a rally cry for the GOP,yet they are pro Patriot Act,which is anti-constitution.The GOP need to figure out how to cure that schism. And on and on.Its not about abortion, its not about cutting taxres. Those are only things they use to get votes, the “leaders”are really followers, and they follow the squeeky wheels. The mistakenly think that because they are loud, they are the majority. They are wrong. I have been a lifelong fiscal conservative who believes in human rights and the the gaurantees of the Constitution. This GOP party has nothing to do with my core values.Democrats are a bit to fiscally loose for me,but all in all,as long as programs are funded that contribute to the well being of the people of this country, and effort is made to control and contain these costs and not promote waste,I respect what the Democratic party is doing much more than the GOP.I will remain Independent, but at this time I can see no GOP candidate for the future who can pull my vote from the Dems. Maybe Colin Powell can become that person, but Im not sure he wants to.

Perhaps a morning, afternoon and evening open thread so folks wouldn’t have to leave the blog in order to post all things Alaska and Palin (rhymes and songs also too) that they’ve come across at all time zones of the world.

There are usually somewhere between 2-3 threads posted on the blog a day. If there were a morning, afternoon and evening open thread, it would be somewhere between 5-6. For most people this would be too many threads.

There are usually open threads posted once every couple of days and you are more than welcome to make use of those until the comments close on those threads.

As I said, the forums are available for any and all discussions. The forums have the added advantage that you can see who else is online at the same time as you, there is a shoutbox where you can post short little chatty stuff.. I really think people need to try and make more use of them – they are *designed* for chatting.

We have added the new blog where you are more than welcome to go as off topic as you like. A post is posted once a day there, and you can post whatever you like in the comments there. We were hoping a lot of the off topic discussion would move over there, but as yet it hasn’t happened. 🙁

There are members of the national media who read this blog and sometimes I feel like they’d look at the comments and wonder what the heck was going on. 🙂 And perhaps what exactly we are all smoking. 😉

Everyone seems to be looking forward to shaking off Palin come the next election… but history isn’t on your side. Who was elected mayor? And why?

Despite all the good work and community rallying, you’ve lost most of your voices on wide-range radio, the papers have never been on your side, and legislation is being prepared to undercut any future effectiveness of the liberal bloggers. Add in the apathy epidemic to American voters, and you have a re-crowned Governor Palin.

It’s obvious there is something missing, something you need to add to the mix. Someone, perhaps. In Alaska, you need a candidate that’s bigger than life (yet isn’t psychotically self-absorbed… good luck with that.) Calm and logical works in anemic cultures — it won’t work in Alaska. So, who you got?

I think the Mudpups are very good information gatherers, some enjoy going out into the big wide internet and bringing back “home” useful information to share with “all”, talk about and further disperse to other progressive blogs around the world, to get information out.

Perhaps they could be automatically posted, morn, noon and night?

    Just a thought.

However, if Colin Powell were to step up to the plate and declare himself in the running for 2012 and could get the real Republicans (rather than the rabid base) on board then I could see myself re-evaluating my disenfranchisement from the Republican party.

So, bring it on Powell, take the Republican party in the direction that it needs to go. The racist rabid fringe Repubs can implode and throw tantrums and break off to create their own party (because they are NOT republicans, just as SP is not a real republican).

I’d like to see the dialogue that would take place in the US if that happened. It might actually become constructive.

I completely agree – they get seen in the comments section once and then get lost because people generally do not go back and read the old comments.

Also by putting them into a “book” – like we did with the recipes on the forum – means that I could put in a section where the songs which are not g or pg rated could be placed – we know parents read the comments section with their kids so we are careful with swear words here.

I said to Lynnrockets that her own blog might be an excellent idea – there’s a lot of mudpuppy bloggers and it really is just as easy as posting a comment once you know how. 😉

If you look at the bottom they have a run through list of people and Palin isn’t one of them. At the top if you click on each person it gives a brief bio of each, and all of them except Sarah has a “learn more” at the bottom of the bio which when clicked will take you to a pdf file of more information on each one.

They don’t believe she is a serious contender but will keep her added just to shut people like her fans and Rush/Billo/FauxNews up!

Besides the (unforgettable) impression that he needs, as Seinfeld has immortalized, a “mansierre” or a “bro,” he’s sweating profusely, bloated, and looks wild-eyed, like he’s racing on something. He’s gotta be on SOMEthing, otherwise he never would have used the word “articulate” to describe She Who Shall Not Be Named.

I think he’s just so fond of our girl because he thinks she’ll hook him up with a good “caffeine” distributor.

The GOP Party elders who desperately and shamelessly gambled on Palin, probably don’t find her the least bit embarrassing. They might be embarrassed by the way in which they ran the country into the ground, or perhaps by the loss of their almost magical ability to hoodwink the typical voter. Their affection for Palin might well exceed the affection on display by Limbaugh.

    =======

To me, asserting that Mooseburgers is articulate is proof that Rush *knows* he’s lying, and that half the fun he has in lying to his audience is that they’re *paying him obscene amounts of money to lie to them*. And the more *obvious* he is that in holding them in utter contempt, the more they pay him and the more they do what he tells them to do.

Read “Going Postal” by Terry Pratchett, with an eye on the character in charge of the “clacks” system.

*No one* in their right mind would assert that she’s articulate. Perhaps “effective” in something or other — not quite sure what — but definitely not *articulate*. Therefore, he knows he’s lying.

Reposting from end of last thread:

Mmmmmm…in reviewing national articles about Palin (not complimentary ones), I think I know where Team Rats and company went! I don’t know for sure, but I’m seeing a LOT of comments that sound just like the whackos always defending her at ADN. I’ve been reviewing articles for months, as many of us have, so I think it’s pretty funny if this is the new trend. There have always been the whackos on the national articles, too, also – but after seeing these lame and unintelligent comments from Team Rats and C4P over the months, they become pretty familiar and I think they are giving up on Alaskans and trying to brainwash lower 49ers instead.

Just a thought, a pretty funny one. Maybe they are only a little less stupid than I give them credit for – finally realizing that they aren’t doing anything but damage in Alaska with their moronic comments mostly on ADN. As though as out-of-staters, and idiots to boot, they are going to affect anyone’s opinion of the twit gov in AK. Alaskans already know how they feel about her, one way or another and it’s so obvious when the rats show up to comment because they are so clueless and so uninformed about Alaska, but try to act like they are. You can spot ‘em in a heartbeat. Hey, maybe they are goin’ ROGUE, too! Rogue Rats – kind of has a nice ring to it.

If they weren’t so stupid and downright creepy, I might even feel a little sorry for them. They were so desperate for a candidate that they chose the wrong one. All that work, all that typing, all those long nights spent trying to defend their twit – mostly from herself. Another thing – now that session is over, Alaskans are mostly ignoring her anyway and getting ready for the summer. So they aren’t getting much of an audience here anyway. Good riddance Rats!

You can hear it in his voice when he speaks. He mocks the left outright, but he really mocks the Left very subtly.
