The Exxon Valdez Radio Call (Videos)
It may be a while since you’ve heard this. It may have been 24 years. That’s how long it’s been since the Exxon Valdez made this radio call after it “fetched up hard aground” on Bligh Reef in Prince William Sound on March 24, 1989. It’s always a tough anniversary.
This commercial is aimed at those living in British Columbia, but it’s a powerful message and a good reminder for all of us. And their estimates of 10-15% recovery for spilled oil is sadly optimistic. It’s more like 7% if you’re lucky.
More than two decades later, the stench and the oil still remains on islands in Prince William Sound.
Here’s a video I shot on what is now known as “Diesel Beach” or “The Death Marsh.” It’s on Knight Island in the Sound. This video was taken on July 4, 2010.
Thanks for raking the muck, AKM.
We must never forget.
Slightly off topic, but one can wonder who actually runs “OUR” government.

Looks like “big awl” has their hooks everywhere.
I flew over PWS a few days after the spill. It was mind boggling. It appeared as if chocolate milk had been dumped in to the water. The mess started half way between Whittier, and Valdez, and continued all the way across the sound.
It eventually spread even wider. As stated above, you can still find oil in PWS without much effort.
Perhaps they will be relaxing the tanker requirements now that the “oily eleven” control the senate?
