Open Thread – Laughter is the Best Medicine

After reading all the comments on the Name That Book thread, I can honestly say I’m in pain. I laughed until I thought I could laugh no more. I’m going to check in tomorrow morning, and pull out a few more, and then post…..the poll. The monstrous poll. The mile long poll. The poll with over 100 entries. The poll to end all polls. I simply could not make it shorter. And at that, I know I’ve left dozens in there that were totally hilarious. But my fingers and eyes have given out. This proved to be quite the Herculean task…but very much worth it.

In the meantime, I am now going to drag myself to bed, as my brain has no more happy chemicals left. All the … whatever it is, that oozes out of your brain when you’re laughing your head off, is depleted and I’m going to slip into blissful unconsciousness.

Laughter has been shown to boost the immune system, aiding the body to fight off illness and disease. Research has shown that laughter increases the secretion of catecholamines and endorphins, which increase feelings of health and happiness. It also lowers the secretion of cortisol and sedimentation rate, thus stimulating the immune systems response. The flow of Oxygen in the blood increases. Heart rate quickens, at first, and blood pressure rises; but the arteries then relax, lowering both heart rate and blood temperature. Circulation increases and the skin temperature rises. All of these responses create a positive effect on both cardiovascular and respiratory problems.

Thank you, Mudflatters. I needed that.

Moose Pucky, thanks for the link to Margaret and Helen. I have never been there before, but I certainly will be going back. I loved the names of her blog entries especially the one titled – If Ann Coulter falls in the forest and nobody hears her, can we just leave her there?

I didn’t think I had any laughter left in me. It’s all been spilling out so.

But I slipped on over to check out Helen and Margaret, and yup, plenty more left to spill out. Moose Pucky recommends today’s posts from Helen and Margaret:

I have a question for the fellow MudPuppies from Wasilla.

Is there anybody that will be secretly attending Wasilla/ Bristol HS graduation tonight….? (with a camera phone)
We need details… and maybe an update on GINO if there is a sighting.

Might she be brandishing some of that favorite Artic Cat wardrobe again..?

  12. curiouser says:

Just a thought…..Palin’s not speaking at the WHS graduation could be seen as being considerate of the possibility Bristol wouldn’t graduate. She wasn’t enrolled for most of the year. How tacky of c4p to make such a big deal out of it.

Are we positive that Bristol is graduating tonight and getting a real diploma?

  13. austintx says:

  14. curiouser says:

I followed the c4pee link back to the Frontiersman WHS 2007 graduation article.

Yikkers! SP’s speech to the graduating class of 2007 sounds like a real downer!

I’d like to point out that RAM has taken some liberties (anyone surprised?) with quote marks in the c4pee article where s/he is quoting Palin’s 2007 address…such as, quoting the phrase ‘cosmic calculus’ as SP’s exact words where the Frontiersman reporter does not. (Perhaps the reporter should have used quotes when he didn’t, but how could we ever know.)

Here’s the excerpt from the Frontiersman article:

“For those of you feeling like you’re middle of the road, lost in the crowd,” she said, “That’s most of us.”

But each of the graduates has a specific destiny, Palin maintained, and even the most undistinguished student has an important role in the final cosmic calculus.

“Seek what it is you are created to do,” she said. “Nothing is an accident.”

According to Palin, though, graduates can’t count on dharma and determinism alone to bring them success. Will and hard work are required, she said.

Palin invoked the Wasilla High mascot, the Warrior, to emphasize just how hard that work may be. But even if life seems like war, Palin suggested, graduates can at least take consolation in the fact that their struggles are foreordained.

    http://209.85.173.132/search?q=cache:YhkUyIfsll8J:www.frontiersman.com/articles/2007/05/25/news/news2.txt+Wasilla+High+School+Track+Palin+graduation+Frontiersman&cd=3&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

And here’s R.A.M’s quote from the c4p article, Governor Palin Not Invited to Speak at Wasilla High’s Graduation:

“For those of you feeling like you’re middle of the road, lost in the crowd — that’s most of us.” Every graduate “has a specific destiny,” even the most “undistinguished student has an important role in the final cosmic calculus. Seek what it is you are created to do,” she said. “Nothing is an accident.”

While reading “An Irish Country Village” today by Patrick Taylor, I came across a name for breasts that I had never heard before. The two main characters were discussing one of his friends that his female compainion had meet at a party and she said, “The one with the blonde with enormous bristols?” She held her hnds cupped in front of her breats, but a good six inches away.”

I got a chuckle out of it.

The National Journal’s new poll of political insiders asks who among the GOP’s current crop of governors has the brightest political future. The magazine surveys 100 Republican and 100 Democratic insiders – well-recognized figures from both inside and outside the Beltway. Interesting results.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is first. Also ranking high are Minnesota’s Tim Pawlenty and Florida’s Charlie Crist, who just announced he’s running for Senate. Sarah Palin got a few votes, as does South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, who’s joining Rick Perry on Thursday night for a tele-conference “tea party” with anti-tax callers.

Perry doesn’t make the cut. From the GOP’s 100 insiders, Texas’ governor got no votes.

    Here’s the top vote-getters:

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal 21 percent
Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour 20 percent
Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty 17 percent
Florida Gov. Charlie Crist 13 percent
South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford 8 percent
Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. 6 percent

For anyone who doesn’t want to go to ADN, here is the offical version of what happened:

UPDATE — Rindi called Tony Jensen, one of the two Wasilla High School senior class advisors and a government teacher at the school. Click below to read his description what happened.

Shortly before 5 p.m., Jensen returned the call. He said school officials ask the senior class – typically their student government leaders – to suggest speakers who have been inspirational to them. The discussion begins months before the event. In this case it began before the class entered its senior year.

Jensen said Palin, who had been chosen as governor since she last gave the school’s commencement address, was the favored pick. School officials were discussing the speaking engagement with the governor’s staff even as late as August. When Palin was picked as the vice-presidential nominee, those discussions took a backseat to her national election campaign. Jensen said he wasn’t sure that she’d ever agreed to speak.

After the election was over, school officials began discussing graduation plans again. Their thinking about asking Palin to speak had changed, Jensen said. The school was already in the national media spotlight because of the election and Palin’s alumni status there. Here’s Jensen’s synopsis:

“We didn’t want that to distract from the graduation ceremony itself. The other idea was, we’d had a political figure speak at the last three or four ceremonies … the idea was floated by our administration that maybe she had had her turn.”

Palin had also given the commencement address at the school when she was mayor of Wasilla, Jensen said. Other notable recent speakers include former Anchorage mayor Rick Mystrom and, last year, Democratic Party candidate for U.S. House Ethan Berkowitz.

Jensen said the question was bounced back to the senior class. They suggested a few other well-known locals, including four-time Iditarod champ Martin Buser and beloved Iditarod musher Dee Dee Jonrowe, but decided to ask English teacher Tom Richards, also a class advisor, to give the commencement, Jensen said. Richards is a favorite teacher among many in the class, he said.

“He’s a very dynamic individual,” Jensen said.

Governor Palin Not Invited to Speak at Wasilla High’s Graduation
    By R. A. Mansour

Tonight Gov. Palin will be attending her daughter’s graduation from Wasilla High School. We learned that the senior class advisors, representing the student body, invited Gov. Palin to speak to the graduating class. All signs indicate that she accepted the invitation, but the school’s administration then decided against it, presumably because they did not want a politician speaking at the ceremony. The school’s administration denied any knowledge of this in an email reply to C4P, but the students are sticking by the story as well as our sources in Wasilla.

Even more troubling is the news that Gov. Palin will not be invited on the stage to shake students’ hands when they receive their diploma, which is a traditional practice whenever a governor is in attendance.

It all seems rather strange considering that Gov. Palin is herself an alumna of Wasilla High and is the current governor and the former GOP candidate for vice president. She has been wooed by many schools nationally who wanted her to speak at their commencement.

I wish someone could explain to me why it is that journalists, who for the most part are representatives of right wing conservatism, feel obligated, no, compelled to interrogate rather than question an interviewee with a liberal bias.

But where are these journalists, with their feral attitudes, when it comes to people like Palin for example? No, no such interrogation, for her a question about what magazine she reads is considered to be too offensive! It makes my blood boil.

Thank you for bringing it to my attention, but now I want to go and scream to let off some steam.

The problems could be solved if Todd wrote the book instead of Gino. Do you suppose she could delegate that limelight? But she never seems to want to take the easiest way. It always has to have some drama.

I suspect the main advantage will be the way supporters can buy thousands of copies instead of donating to another fund. I would suggest they go with a POD (print on demand) so they don’t have to worry about warehousing and shipping all the hard copies. They could just have the deliveries “pending.”

Here is Alaskas legal definition of employment for state workers.

I really think this hinges on what the IRS considers employer/employee relationship.

Where I live you may not be considered “self employed”, unless you perform the same service to a variety of companies or payees, over the tax year.

Simple instances…..yard maintenance, house cleaners, plumbers, lawyers, engineers, psychiatric doctors, etc., may form their own companies or incorporate to be considered “self employed”. Part of my business at one time involved employees. Although I had “independent contracts” with them they were considered by “Uncle Sam” employees.

To do one thing, one time for Harper Collins, the monies would be paid directly to Palin, ergo employer/employee relationship.
That’s just my take on it, from my own life experience and common sense.

However if I were an Alaskan, I would , be calling/writing the IRS to get an opinion. I would request the opinion in writing. I would record all conversations and make hard copies of all e-mailed or mailed communications. I would keep a record of date, time, and persons (always get their name first!)I communicated with. This isn’t paranoid, this advice was given to be by a lawyer eons ago. I make a habit of doing all of the above in my business. If a government agency is involved, I do record conversations until I get something in writing. If I’m dealing with a company I do not particularly trust, I do the same.

    I’m not a lawyer, but have had wonderful (I know this might not seem true but it is) lawyers . Not all of them are in just for the money and semi retired partners LOVE to do “interesting” pro bono work. If there are any Lawyers perusing this site, please lend us a “hand” in comprehending the following;

    S 39.52.170. Outside Employment Restricted.
    (a) A public employee may not render services to benefit a personal or financial interest or engage in or accept employment outside the agency which the employee serves, if the outside employment or service is incompatible or in conflict with the proper discharge of official duties.
    (b) A public employee rendering services for compensation, or engaging in employment outside the employee’s agency, shall report by July 1 of each year the outside services or employment to the employee’s designated supervisor. During the year, any change in an employee’s outside service or employment activity must be reported to the designated supervisor as it occurs.
    (c) The head of a principal executive department of the state may not accept employment for compensation outside the agency that the executive head serves.

I was reading on Regina’s blog about how some folks feel Todd is trying to be “rebranded” as his own entity, possibly for his own future political run. The outing with Greta and friends at the FOX table was one possible example of this; calling him “The First Gent(leman)” now instead of the “First Dude” is another.

Anyone else have thoughts on this? That is one scary thought
    ____________________________________________

In my opinion Todd will not be running for anything political. The “re-branding” is just part and parcel of Sarah trying to upgrade her own image. That is what the “first dude changeover to first gentleman” is all about. Sarah is trying to make herself look less like a backwoods girl who kills her own dinner and more like the elitists she claims to disdain. Same goes for the little trip with Greta. It is to make them more “classy” in appearance rather than “down-homey”.

I think that Todd likes being in the background, thinking of himself as the family body guard. He gets to be in the limelight via Sarah, but can slip back into the snow-machine dude when it suits him.

Again I move my foot. Once. Twice. Success. My head is free — I see a hint of light.

Is it the light through the open door? I’m not sure. I still can’t see clearly. My eyes are still blurred.

What’s this? Something moved. What is it? Someone else is here. They just straightened up — stood straight up and is slowly turning around.

  117. EyeOnYou says:

Like Shannyn said on Olberman, Palin is the queen or revisionism. That is what this book is about. She is going to attempt to clear her name by putting her own spin on the stories out there, but in order to come off as more “real” she is including it in with her life story. Now I bet that she is going to have a chapter or two on her life prior to Mayor of Wasilla and then it will be all spin from there on out.

People who don’t like her will buy it just to see what she has to say, so no doubt it will sell. How much I don’t know. Personally I wouldn’t pay a dime for it, but I know plenty of others who will.

The fact that she is already talking about how she is going to “tell the real story” about the Katie Couric interview is proof enough that this is simply her attempt to make herself look better. The people who will buy into her BS are the ones who already do anyhow so it won’t change any one’s mind. Add to that the fact that anyone who has heard her speak “off the cuff” knows she can barely string together two coherent sentences is proof enough that she won’t be the one doing the actual writing of this book.

This is simply another way for her to attempt to make money, and the problem she is going to find is that if what she says doesn’t jive up with what the truth really is (and we all know that technology allows for record-keeping that will either prove or disprove her claims) it will be worse for her because it will all be on written record that she is nothing more than a liar and someone who will do whatever she can to change the story to suit her.

  118. austintx says:

    Ripley – Ok…….easy…….deep breath……..smile………

  119. Professor Geezer says:

@GA Peach, I caught what Matthews & Crew said on HARDBALL about the book. But it’s to EVERYONE’s benefit to make it seem like the book could have legs. MSNBC’s ratings shot up last year because of the “Horse Race” aspect of the election.

The GOP is fairly lame now (Only 21% of Americans claim its affiliation), but if there is no “horse race,” then there is no drama.

The Dems and the media wants to have Sarah Palin in the mix as she is a tabloid GOP figure. It adds up to “good business” all around from a corporate mentality.

And as many other have pointed out (for example, posters on Gryphen’s blog), the right wings organizations buy up these books in bulk, to make sure they are on the bestseller lists, so that they can be branded “bestsellers.”

What I thought was so hilarious on HARDBALL was that Matthews clearly pointed out Palin would not be writing her own book, and it stuck in his craw that she would now call herself “an author.” 🙂

The question they asked her was ‘ being a role model’.
I will paraphrase here, do you think it is right that you got your ‘medical procedure’ just to try to win a contest and the purpose of the contest and the context of the question asked of you was …. ‘ to be yourself ‘…?
Is this not being rather hypocritical… etc..?

She then got a very sour look on her face, did a Palin, and hemmed and hawed and said she was NOT going to answer that question. Said THAT topic was covered in the previous interview. The interviewer said ‘Somebody may not have seen her other interview and the answer…. and this is for the people tuning in… right NOW…?
She would not give an answer…. inferring that Trump covered that answer etc.

I seriously doubt any judge would agree with the AG that the issue turns on whether one is an “employee”, as the statute is clearly aimed at a full time state employee having another “job” whether as employee or as an independent contractor. For example, I am quite sure the AG could not practice law outside of his or her office, even as as independent contractor.

This is what the legal opinion given to Palin stated:

The law department has looked into whether the governor having a book contract conflicts with the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Acts, including its prohibition on accepting outside “employment for compensation.”
The department concluded a book contract isn’t employment, because it’s not regular work for a salary or wage. State employees are allowed to provide services for their own financial benefit as long as it’s on their own time, does not conflict with their official duties and does not involve using state equipment or resources, said the legal opinion, signed by deputy attorney general Richard Svobodny.

But her being paid by the publisher to “write a book” while Governor appears to be a clear violation of the statute.

Employment is a contract between two parties, one being the employer and the other being the employee. An employee may be defined as: “A person in the service of another under any contract of hire, express or implied, oral or written, where the employer has the power or right to control and direct the employee in the material details of how the work is to be performed.” Black’s Law Dictionary page 471 (5th ed. 1979).

As for the Wright angle, I don’t know if that is a valid comparison due to the differences in law between federal/state, as well as what the laws were then vs. now.

Still, Alaska’s law will be supreme in terms of whether this is a legal or illegal ’employment’.

Based on this definition from Answers.com, section 3 would mean a direct violation of Alaska law.
    employment

    Dictionary: em·ploy·ment (ĕm-ploi’mənt) pronunciation

    1.
    1. The act of employing.
    2. The state of being employed.

Now, we all have access to these squawk boxes but with pictures too! Though if you like you can just get the audio..

Their report in early 1989 implied that he had used bulk purchases of his book, Reflections of a Public Man, to earn speaking fees in excess of the allowed maximum, and that his wife, Betty, was given a job and perks to avoid the limit on gifts. Faced with an increasing loss of effectiveness, he resigned as Speaker on May 31, 1989, effective upon the selection of a successor. On June 6, the Democratic caucus brought his Speakership to an end by selecting his replacement, Tom Foley, and on June 30 he resigned from his seat in Congress.

Mr. Barnett the book lawyer: if paid a penny out of the ATF = fraud, yes?
    ________________________________

If by ATF you mean the Alaska Fund Trust then the answer is no.
    Why?
Because of the way it is worded specifically to allow money to be taken out for no reason whatsoever. She can also easily claim that she got this book deal because she is the Governor and can allow payment to be made due to that claim.

That Trust is worded very carefully in my opinion to allow the use of those funds for most anything at all.

    2. Trust Purpose. The sole and exclusive purpose of this Trust is to provide a proper means for the acceptance of money, property, and services, including, if necessary, pro bono legal services, to provide for all reasonable, necessary, and appropriate fees or charges incurred by (i) SARAH PALIN as a result of the fact that she is Governor of the State of Alaska or as a result of the performance of her duties as Governor of the State of Alaska; and (ii) Covered Individuals, that may be selected or designated by the Trustee as provided herein, as a result of or arising out of their association or relationship with or employment by SARAH PALIN, in her
capacity as Governor of the State of Alaska. In addition, the purpose of the Trust shall be to pay all reasonable, necessary, and appropriate expenses of Trustee’s counsel and such other and usual, customary expenses and services that have been or may be incurred in connection with the above-stated purpose.

All she has to do is claim that she got the book deal due to her being Governor which is why she was selected to run for VP and her rise in popularity/exposure (she can attribute it all back to being the Governor) & she is basically covering her butt on this.
Of course I could be wrong, but I am willing to bet I am not.

  172. PepperzMom (GA) says:

Don’t know for sure since no one has seen the actual contract, but I still have friends in the literary agent/publishing business, and they think that the contract with HarperCollins may include a clause that SP owes HC any money for net sales (actual book revenues less any/all production costs, including print run costs, royalties/publicity/returns fees/settlements/taxes/legal/overrun destruction) less than her purported advance of $1 million.

Methinks, and based on my remembrances as a cost accountant for Simon & Schuster for 5+ years, the book is gonna have to sell at least 150,000 copies. Even if the books is priced out at $30 retail, the likelihood is with most bookstores offering 10-30% new title discounts, no one can count on revenue at the retail price. meaning more books must be sold.

Remember one thing about book production and production costs: if a press run is 150,000 copies and only 50,000 sell, the production costs used in calculating net sales is the full cost of the 150,000 press run.

This is going to be interesting to see if the contract does indeed include a “profit” clause as I described above.

PS: The one literary agent I keep in touch with at least 4 times a year says that Miss Sarah signed a “chump’s deal”, meaning that if she didn’t sign this, any future advance offers would be even lower.

Then, Mr. Trump commented that Judge #8 was doing his thing. Awwwwwww….again. Wonder who chose #8 anyway?

And then Mr. Trump said Miss California would stay….the pictures were okay. Wonder if o’ Trump lets everyone out of a valid, binding contract after lying, and yes, she did lie. Okay to lie if you’re beautiful, that was the message given young ladies. (Heard there are more pictures that have not been released on the internet worse than what o’ Trump looked at.)

I don’t know, but while watching that press conference, I thought I was being taken for a ride. A publicity stunt? Seemed like that to me. Wonder when that contract was signed with NBC? Just thinkin’

  176. Terpsichore says:

I accidently posted this OT on the Olbermann thread (or something like it, ’cause my browser is doing the “not letting me copy” trick again. Don’t ask me why. It is intemittent … )

Mr. Barnett the book lawyer: if paid a penny out of the ATF = fraud, yes?

And here’s the hypothetical scenario I posited:

Let’s say SP got $500,000 advance on the book. Let’s say she banks it and next year announces she’s running for Gov. and dumps the $500,000 into her campaign fund.

Let’s say enough people are bamboozled into donating $500,000 to the AFT.

Now, aren’t donations to political campaigns tax deductable, but to the Fund Trust NOT tax deductible?

So … the way I see it if that’s what happens, is hard-working American’s lost out on tax deductions for $500,000

Another question: Do you get a tax deduction for donating money to YOUR OWN campaign? (I suppose you do, but I bet the amount you can take is limited by law).

Oh yeah, I can see a whole lot of good reasons for the Palin’s to do something like this.

When what they should do with the advance money (IMO) is pay the currently outstanding lawyer bills, not expect the citizens of Alaska and America to pay them.

AustinTX: I am so sick of people blowing this Miss Cali thing out of proportion. She wasn’t ridiculed in the beginning because of WHAT she belives, it was because she called traditional marriage, OPPOSITE MARRIAGE and we found that funny and she reminded us of Miss South Carolina and her “US AMericans need maps” answer.

THEN we found out that Miss Purity posed for many photos where apparently Satan had the wind blow her clothes off and the photographer took the photo anyway!!

And if anyone takes a pageant seriously that has Perez Hilton as a judge, well please, get a life!!!

but all the usual suspects on the far right like Palin use this to spout off for attention.

@ UK Lady, I could hardly believe “the-horrible-thing-on-Trump’s-head” spouting off about how beautiful her semi-naked pics were. Carrie Prejean swore and avowed that she had not been photographed in a sexy and sordid state of disarray …. and then the-thing-on-Trump’s-head swore and avowed that Carrie Prejean’s sordid (let’s be nice – nipple) pics were “too beautiful” for her to called on her fraudulent contract with the -horrible-thing-on-Trump’s-head. Or was that another Trump body part talking– like his wallet, such as??

Went to the ADN thread, the Palinbots have mustered a few pathetic comments, they really are a sour smallminded bunch. I am amazed how they spin stuff, under normal circumstances they would be horrified with a topless, fake boobed, bleach blonde. Now that their queen has sided with her she is a close second to Mother Theresa.

Can you imagine if this hadn’t happened and topless photo’s of say, Meghan McCain (they seem to hate her at the moment) had surfaced? They would have raptured themselves stupid ………….oops, too late :lol

GINO talked to ms. fake boobs twice Now! You can really tell they are BFF’s now! I can’t stand the hypocrisy of it??? They don’t like Meghan M right now, I think they are afraid she will spill secrets about the campaign!
I think “trump” (hehe) should of stripped her of her crown b/c she violated rules, but he’s either thinking with his little head or looking for a new wife, IMO!

I was flipping throughTV channels this morning while eating breakfast and came across a cartoon show called Flight Squad. The good guys were trying to stop the bad guys from hunting wolves from helicopters. Now for the good part, the bad guys were called the Barracudas.

    A cartoon?
I wonder if it was put out by DoW? Sounds like quite a coincidence?

Wouldn’t you think Combover King Trump (p.s. we use trump as a euphemism for fart here in the UK), might have made a big boobie here ?(couldn’t resist sorry).

Shanna Moakler won’t be the only one who is disgusted with this decision. How about the girls who abided by the rules. How about the girls who didn’t even enter because they knew they didn’t fit the supposed perameters.

Worse, how about the mothers of these girls?, we all know what a rabid bunch they can be.

The furore to come will have less and less to do with her pathetic answer, and more and more to do with what Americans hold dear, a sense of fair play. I think GINO would have been wise to keep her mouth shut on this one instead of making a tit of herself as usual. (I just can’t help myself, it’s too easy).

What she meant to say, is everyone but the queers. I hate that woman. Let her jump aboard the Prejean ship, because, honey, it’s going down. The scandal is NOT about PJ’s views on marriage. It’s because she violated her contract. And of COURSE GINO will defend her on it.
