“Second Battle for Statehood” A Mudflats Video Report
Senator Bill Wielechowski called the effort to repeal Gov. Sean Parnell’s massive giveaway to oil companies “the second battle for statehood.” Alaska navigated its first battle over fish, and now must again rise to assert primacy over the rights to its resources. This time, it’s Alaska’s oil and gas wealth at stake.
The Mudflats was there on the historic day that more than 50,000 signatures were submitted to put the repeal on the ballot. Here’s our report.
in alaska proof of misconduct is needed. In Wisconsin -which was the first state in the US to put in the modern version of a recall- recalls are for whatever reason the public wants them. in our case it was over the gutting of collective bargaining. it failed because of the quirks in the state law giving the governor unlimited campaign funds-usually there’s a 10000 dollar limit- and three months of unopposed airtime, combined with a weak opponent. i hope you guys can get a recall up and going. of course , if it is successful you’d get governor meadwell in his place..
Of course, admin officials could do nothing and pretend we really want ConocoPhillips Philips to run the govt and allow us to live in Alaska they are so generous. Listen to their ads.
I am so proud of Alaska right now!
Parnell and the other legislature corporate shills must be quaking in their boots! (No wonder Parnell looked so unhappy at the picnic.)
Now, the hard part — getting registered voters to the primary where this will appear on the ballot. We already know AK primaries can be wildly contentious. Alaskans, help get your friends, neighbors, acquaintances, co-workers, and relatives to vote. I wish you all the best.
Kudos to the over 50,000 Alaskans ready to stand up and be counted as FOR Alaska and AGAINST Parnell. Now, a recall should be next 🙂
Democracy in action…with song!
What could be better?
Way to go, Alaska, and good luck.
Hope glimmers like the stars of your flag.
Let it shine.
It’s awesome to see the general population stand up against the corporate weasels that have infiltrated our legislature. Bill is right that this is a fight for sovereignty. Hopefully, it is also the time that we all wake up to the bill of goods that many of our politicians have been selling us. They are bought and paid for. Let their buyers feed and house them. We are done working on that farm.
Yay Mudflats!
Go Alaska!
