Open Thread – And the Winner IS…(Updated!)
Mudflatter Lisa has sent an email, stating that she does not use milk on her oatmeal, and therefore realized after the fact that the milk requirement was not satisfied. She has graciously decided to forego the prize and pass it on to the first person who included milk. (big round of applause for Lisa)
So, we can now congratulate our new winner Mudflatter Stephanie and her pink sippy bowl of Cocoa-Puffs! Bowl – check, Cereal – check, Milk – check, Sigh – check! Enjoy your copy of Bloggers on the Bus, Stephanie!
I’ll post the other entries on tonight’s open thread!
*******************************************************************************
Congratulations to Mudflatter Lisa! She was the first to get her photo submitted via email, and included all the relevant components – bowl of cereal, spoon and sign. As the winner of our photo contest, Lisa will be receiving her very own copy of Bloggers on the Bus by Eric Boehlert. Thanks to all who participated! I’ll be posting all the entries shortly so you all can enjoy the submissions. My inbox was quite full of cereal!
I had a very busy and fun evening which I’ll fill you in on tomorrow. But, as it’s 3am and I am posting this in real time, I am off to bed!

I didn’t see much about Memorial Day on here today, so I would like to pay tribute to all those who have sacrificed everything in their service to our country. I watched several services and thought about my own relatives and the countless people I will never know that lost their lives in the service of our military. Some did it willingly and others (Viet Nam Draft era) were not so willing. Whatever the circumstances, they all gave their all in our name and for that I am so grateful and humbled.
nite everyone. i really do wish we could find peaceful grannie. at least to make sure she is alright. i miss her voice. i have to take my stupid pill now so see you tomorrow…love b
hi bob. welcome to mudflats. hope to see you here again….b
Bob – I posted this early on and I was fine with Lisa’s entry.
But she came forward with her “no milk” declaration and the runner-up moved up. Lisa is still a champ in my book. Any way – no worries and come around more often.

Happy birthday Irish Girl!!! Hope you are hoisting a pint to the flats as I type this!
Congrats to Stephanie for her sippy bowl shot and to Lisa for fessing up about her milk-free oatmeal.
Last night, I whipped out my camera, made the I heartmudflats sign and taped it to my dog’s head. I put the first bowl down (he LOVES cereal and milk) and began to click away. It took until the end of the SECOND bowl that I finally got a good shot. Then when I went to transfer the pics we already has us a winner! Oh well, my dog sure was happy!
See AKM, you even make dogs happy all the way over in CT:)
I’m not saying help from FEMA would not be a good thing, BUT where is the help from the state of ALASKA.

Just talked to my niece and she said it was 80 degrees in Fbks. today, sure hope it holds out, I’ll be there on the 3rd, can’t wait!! I have a question-the peepees are saying Sarah sent out a message, declaring the floods a disaster and wanting help from FEMA, seems they get the Alaska info before it hits the Alaska papers, its nowhere on Fbks News or ADNews , whats up with that?????
Who would have thought AKM’s contest would be so dangerous? LOVE your sparkling new cereal ideas, everyone….and UKLady: could you point the spouse to the cereal for his dinner?
@UKLady #222:
My kindred spirit–only my crash-n-burn involved doggie drool and a granite counter top. Husband thought it was hilarious last night…he’s now outside cleaning out the gutters, trying to get back in my good graces (and a homecooked meal).

Geeze Louise..I have not thought of “Coming to take me Away” in many, many years…too many to count. What a Flash from the past. Thanx

Well, that all depends on whether you are using real tin, or just an aluminum substitute…my tin foil hat is made from authentic tin hammered from the used casings of Kippered Snacks eaten whilst hiking near the Oregon Vortex to imbue them with superior telepathic tuning qualities.
you are a kind hearted soul bubbles, but no cooking if he is home after 8.30pm. He is an optimist, he always thinks he will get dinner even if it is 10pm. I have no idea why he thinks this, it has never happened in 10 years. Don’t worry too much, he is a happy boy and the fridge is full of food and beer, just no waitress.
big slick — Good find.
Does that mean our foil hats won’t protect us anymore??
What are we gonna do???
big slick-ha ha he he ho ho. thanks for finding that video…..you rock…b
please uklady go fix that man his dinner.and another pint…love b
No bubbles, I’m OK thanks, just the usual near death experience with dogs on stairs, ask any dog owner, they will be well acquainted with it.
UKMAN has just come in from a quick pint with the boys (lasted 4 hours), stinks of guinness and is wondering where his dinner is, HA!, I have two smilin’ dogs.
Here they come.

Congratulations to Stephanie on having milk in the house when so many of us milk-drinkers failed. 🙂
Yay Lisa, Yay Stephanie!
And congrats on the good catch with the emaily link Irishgirl. V. Interesting train of thought.
Irishgirl, I kid you not, cameras, stairs, dogs and 2am is not a healthy lifestyle.
who doesn’t like a little “Palin-NutZ-Erie- Oh’s” on the Mudflats everyday….
And the ADN newspaper eats ” EaR -eehh! -oh’s ” everyday ,,, Shiela Toomey feeds it to them
Yay, Lisa and yay, Stephanie!
I was hoping to see an entry from the Palin family. I’d bet their kitchen is milk and cereal most of the day. Maybe Greta was in town and distracted them?
*heard*
Congrats to both Lisa and Stephanie.
I had my camera batteries recharged and was skulking back and forth to Mudflats all day yesterday. Alas, us Europeans never stood a chance. The competition was announced and won while I was sleeping. And I hear that UK Lady had a nasty incident concerning a dog, a stairs and a camera at around 2am this morning.
Not the iceberg, but did you see that France spanked the scientologists? I mean really, who could believe that stupid cult is a religion? I drive by the place on Sunset when I get my hair cut and shake my head every time.

Woo Hoo- should be fun. They’re broadcasting at 10:00 AM on Tuesday. I think there’s a link to a live stream it at (aprn dot org)

The village voice has a very good article
http://www.villagevoice.com/2008-10-08/news/the-book-of-sarah/
Goes into housegate on pg 4-5 I believe also, too….
go to palingates and she has quite good write ups on “housegate”
Regina also has quite a write up “Sarah Palin’s Valley friends”
About the 5 who resigned she says:
*Former board president Cheryl Combs, in a written statement about her resignation, cited concerns that Executive Director Cheryl Metiva may have “inappropriately spent” money for personal expenses and without board approval.
Two board members said they decided to resign in part because of threats from Metiva’s husband, Marty Metiva.
* Crowder said the board decided to give the money to charity, including the United Way of Mat-Su and the Wasilla senior center, because the event was advertised as raising money for charity.
Marty Metiva, the event organizer, wanted the money to go to the chamber.
*Some quotes by Cheryl Metiva when Sarah Palin was tapped by John McCain:
“She’s more woman than Hillary and she’s more man than Hillary,” said Cheryl Metiva, who attends Wasilla Bible Church with Palin. “She’s a feminist on a mission. She’s very much in touch with being a wife and a mother and a girlfriend to the women in her life.” Boston.com
*Cheryl and her husband Marty are the couple in the center of the photo, taken at Sarah Palin’s Inaugural Ball.
Marty Metiva ran for mayor of Wasilla last year, but lost to Verne Rupright. The couple are on the Iditarod Trail committee, which has just lost sponsorship money from Wasilla as it was omitted from the city’s budget at the direction of Mayor Verne Rupright. Iron Dog also lost Wasilla’s sponsorship.
She also has 2 vids. 🙂

Update on Ann S in Nunam (she’s having intermittent Internet issues – the triple i syndrome):
“Sooooo update. Kotlik, Emmonak, and Alakanuk have all broken up and are all flooding. We got a call from hubby’s best friend in Kotlik last night at 3 a.m. He was freaking out b/c their water was still rising and he was worried they might have to evacuate.
Nunam still hasn’t broken up yet. Last night all the water drained from the lake like area on the way to the airport. Now the boardwalks are completely visible and no longer underwater. Was very wierd to look over there this morning and go HEY WHERE’D ALL THE WATER GO??
Right now there are 3 major ice jams. One below Alakanuk, one in between Alakanuk and Emmonak and one above Emmonak/below Kotlik. We are hearing extensive Trooper Ice Crew/Pilot reports throughout the day. Even they aren’t sure Nunam will flood but it could never know.
So that’s what’s going on right now. Need to wash EVERY LAST dish and NOT leave any behind like I do most the times. So I will try to find time to do a post later today. Don’t worry we are doing well here :-D”

Severe flooding hits Yukon River village of Emmonak (by Jill Burke) Sunday, May 24, 2009
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Residents in the Yukon River village of Emmonak say they are experiencing the worst flooding they’ve seen in years.
There are reports homes are flooding and that people in low-lying areas are evacuating to the school.
There’s more, but that’s the pertinent bits
Saying prayers for all our folks in harm’s way.
We are discussing #97 over at the open thread.
Sorry for the extremely long post and interrupting the cereal naming. I’m off the Memorial Day events now, I promise.

@ #11 Isabella, austintx, curiouser, Canadian Neighbour and others re: sports complex discussion from previous thread:
The link to the WSJ provided by curiouser (#166 last open thread) and the problems child’s comment “I think the problem is that they broke ground on the project before the transfer actually took place, and then they were stuck.” pretty much says it all about the sports complex land purchase.
The timing of Palin’s house construction and similarity of some materials is interesting, though so far no one has found a smoking gun. At the time, there was basically one major source of building materials in town, so it could be just coincidental. I’d be curious to know how if the similar items came from SBS and how many other homes built around that time used those materials.
Re: Dave Hanson being related to Brad Hanson and/or Britta Hanson, I can’t help there.
Re: Metivas – There is no doubt they are social climbers, and in Wasilla, if one wants to be among the movers and shakers one joins the Wasilla Bible Church. It’s a good sized church, though, and not all who go there are close. I would guess that the Inaugural Ball appearance was one of those “agency” invites addressed to the Chamber rather than a personal one, though I could be wrong. I am not sure, but would bet that Marty ran unopposed for his city council seat, a fairly common occurrence. It’s a small town, and volunteers are appreciated, so not many organizations would say “no” to potential new members or even people anxious to take on leadership positions. However, the issue of how they could be active participants in so many organizations (instead of just using the names as resume builders) and how Marty could really lead the city knowing so little about its past and having been here such a short time, as well as his lack of actual accomplishments here and “Music Man” persona had a lot to do with his defeat in the mayoral race. You bring up a good point about money in the various organizations they belonged to – Personally, I’d love to see an audit of the Polar Plunge accounts, now that we know he’s written at least one $1,000 check to the Chamber.
Could be that the family Track went to live with was through a Metiva connection, but could be coincidental also. It’s not unknown to send hockey kids off to other places and families to further their careers. Local rumor has Track involved in several incidents around town, though, so I’d guess, but can’t prove, he was sent there, then to the military to straighten his act out. But we already knew Palin wasn’t a mother-of-the-year candidate.
I’d encourage anybody who finds concrete proof of wrongdoing to forward same to your favorite local FBI agent. They aren’t done cleaning house yet.

AKM ~ i hope you’ll ‘special-it-up’ even more by autographing it for her!
Congrats to Lisa ! (one who knows how to follow directions and to be clear in response)….
In my flurry of competition it appears that I neglected to size my entry from its initial large picture size ~ may have clogged akm’s tubes for a while. 🙁 Hope it wasn’t flung to the flats.
Looking forward to seeing other entries.
Beautiful Lisa! Looks delicious from here – Congrats!!!
Here’s just an idea…. for those who might go out today.
There will be all kinds of ‘Sales’ going on today. My local ‘gently used clothing store’ has a sale as well and it is 50% off ALL clothing. Their prices are always very good (and good quality).. but at 50% off… you can’t go wrong. Time to shop and fill some flat-rate boxes for Eagle.
Forgot to mention, I have a three story house and two more sets of stairs to the front and back porches. I just know that my epitaph will read “She just had too many stairs, and too many dogs. RIPWNS (rest in peace with no stairs).”
@ UK Lady
“Stairs and dogs can be lethal.”
That’s an understatement if there ever was one! Esp. if they think it’s a race!
Congrats to Lisa….but I must say that cereal looks way too healthy for me.
@Aussie
The photo of the toad & Greta is really bizarre. I always wonder what’s going on in his head… probably not much. His expression never changes.
I woke up too late from my nap to be first. Then I had to skip dinner because I couldn’t waste the cereal so I ate it. 🙁

(couldn’t resist)
Congrats to Lisa!
CoAlmost Native, glad you’re ok – and thanks for that link. Very interesting article.
I am fully impressed with the winning entry! Wish I woulda thought of it!
Ahhh creativity… it runs rampant in these parts. Well done!
austintx Says “Funny you mention the kitchen. When the Lauer and Greta interviews came out , more than a few people marveled at the exact materials that are in both her home and the complex. Many pictures were compared and sure seem to bear out speculation that the supply truck made 2 stops. And on the land deal , how much land are we talkin’ ?? I mean , 1.5 mil. is a lot of money to “overpay”. Especially on a parcel of land where it does not appear there was due diligence done and a free and clear title secured. BTW – Was the real-estate agent who handled all this the lady who recently set up the trust ??”
Is Dave Hanson, (Who is listed as a Sports Complex’s Building Supervisor) related to Brad Hanson?

Is Dave one of the “Buddies”, who helped build Palin’s house?

Congrats to Lisa! For those who followed my cereal fiasco on the last thread: I am fine, thanks to Fat Tire and Arnica; doggie thinks she’s my BFF…husband? not so much–my kitchen is closed for Memorial Day (heh heh).
@here_in_PA: Confucius is mistaken; it’s not a cat house, it’s the golf course 🙂

OMG! I read about your “fiasco” I hope your feeling better today!
Congrats to Lisa.
OT, but intriguing:

I’m looking forward to hearing the results of this meeting- sounds like the tribes are tired of being ignored by the state government.
I agree where is the milk . Sorry Lisa I don’t mean to burst your bubble just saying . There could be a splash of milk in there just the way you like it .

Congratulations Lisa. You must be real quick on the draw, I nearly broke my blinkin’ neck running downstairs to get to the kitchen. Dogs thought we must have a burglar coz I was running around at 2 in the morning, so got all mental and raced down with me. Stairs and dogs can be lethal.
Me ‘n’ Dud in our matching tuxes. Doesn’t one of us look more strangely wrinkle-free than usual?

Um – I think it’s in there…..she likes it gooey.
Funny, not meaning to be picky – but I don’t see any milk either…
I had to walk three miles barefoot in the snow, uphill both ways, to get the milk for my picture, but that’s OK.
Won’t there be a brass medal, AKM?
Hey! Where is the milk? I don’t see it…. just kidding but I did think there was a trick to the contest. I read too much into everything!
Have a great day everyone and congrats to Lisa (o:
