Open Thread – And the Winner IS…(Updated!)

Mudflatter Lisa has sent an email, stating that she does not use milk on her oatmeal, and therefore realized after the fact that the milk requirement was not satisfied.  She has graciously decided to forego the prize and pass it on to the first person who included milk.  (big round of applause for Lisa)

So, we can now congratulate our new winner Mudflatter Stephanie and her pink sippy bowl of Cocoa-Puffs!  Bowl – check, Cereal – check, Milk – check, Sigh – check!  Enjoy your copy of Bloggers on the Bus, Stephanie!

I’ll post the other entries on tonight’s open thread!

Congratulations to Mudflatter Lisa!  She was the first to get her photo submitted via email, and included all the relevant components – bowl of cereal, spoon and sign.  As the winner of our photo contest, Lisa will be receiving her very own copy of Bloggers on the Bus by Eric Boehlert.  Thanks to all who participated!  I’ll be posting all the entries shortly so you all can enjoy the submissions.  My inbox was quite full of cereal!

I had a very busy and fun evening which I’ll fill you in on tomorrow.  But, as it’s 3am and I am posting this in real time, I am off to bed!

I didn’t see much about Memorial Day on here today, so I would like to pay tribute to all those who have sacrificed everything in their service to our country. I watched several services and thought about my own relatives and the countless people I will never know that lost their lives in the service of our military. Some did it willingly and others (Viet Nam Draft era) were not so willing. Whatever the circumstances, they all gave their all in our name and for that I am so grateful and humbled.

Congrats to Stephanie for her sippy bowl shot and to Lisa for fessing up about her milk-free oatmeal.

Last night, I whipped out my camera, made the I heartmudflats sign and taped it to my dog’s head. I put the first bowl down (he LOVES cereal and milk) and began to click away. It took until the end of the SECOND bowl that I finally got a good shot. Then when I went to transfer the pics we already has us a winner! Oh well, my dog sure was happy!

The village voice has a very good article
    http://www.villagevoice.com/2008-10-08/news/the-book-of-sarah/

Goes into housegate on pg 4-5 I believe also, too….
go to palingates and she has quite good write ups on “housegate”

Regina also has quite a write up “Sarah Palin’s Valley friends”
About the 5 who resigned she says:
*Former board president Cheryl Combs, in a written statement about her resignation, cited concerns that Executive Director Cheryl Metiva may have “inappropriately spent” money for personal expenses and without board approval.

Two board members said they decided to resign in part because of threats from Metiva’s husband, Marty Metiva.
    * Crowder said the board decided to give the money to charity, including the United Way of Mat-Su and the Wasilla senior center, because the event was advertised as raising money for charity.

Marty Metiva, the event organizer, wanted the money to go to the chamber.

*Some quotes by Cheryl Metiva when Sarah Palin was tapped by John McCain:

“She’s more woman than Hillary and she’s more man than Hillary,” said Cheryl Metiva, who attends Wasilla Bible Church with Palin. “She’s a feminist on a mission. She’s very much in touch with being a wife and a mother and a girlfriend to the women in her life.” Boston.com
*Cheryl and her husband Marty are the couple in the center of the photo, taken at Sarah Palin’s Inaugural Ball.

Marty Metiva ran for mayor of Wasilla last year, but lost to Verne Rupright. The couple are on the Iditarod Trail committee, which has just lost sponsorship money from Wasilla as it was omitted from the city’s budget at the direction of Mayor Verne Rupright. Iron Dog also lost Wasilla’s sponsorship.

She also has 2 vids. 🙂

    Hey all,

Sorry I didn’t do an update yesterday. I was doing every piece of laundry I could find in my house LOL getting ready to finish packing up to go to Ugashik. Will try to get a post up on anonymous bloggers later tdoay

Nunam is doing fine. Our river is still intact and hasn’t broken up. Upriver is another story!

Kotlik broke up and is having MAJOR flooding. Last night at 3 am my hubby’s best friend called because he was panicking because their water was still rising. He was worried they might have to evacuate. Haven’t checked on them yet this morning.

Emmonak has broken up and experiencing moderate/major flooding.

    Alakanuk is having moderate flooding.

There are 3 ice jams right now. One between Nunam and Alakanuk. One between Alakanuk and Emmonak. And one between Emmonak and Kotlik. The ice is piled up for about 15 miles according to the National Weather Service website tried to put the link up but my comment went to moderation.

Will try to keep y’all updated as best I can. So far we are doing fine here in Nunam.

“Sooooo update. Kotlik, Emmonak, and Alakanuk have all broken up and are all flooding. We got a call from hubby’s best friend in Kotlik last night at 3 a.m. He was freaking out b/c their water was still rising and he was worried they might have to evacuate.

Nunam still hasn’t broken up yet. Last night all the water drained from the lake like area on the way to the airport. Now the boardwalks are completely visible and no longer underwater. Was very wierd to look over there this morning and go HEY WHERE’D ALL THE WATER GO??

Right now there are 3 major ice jams. One below Alakanuk, one in between Alakanuk and Emmonak and one above Emmonak/below Kotlik. We are hearing extensive Trooper Ice Crew/Pilot reports throughout the day. Even they aren’t sure Nunam will flood but it could never know.

So that’s what’s going on right now. Need to wash EVERY LAST dish and NOT leave any behind like I do most the times. So I will try to find time to do a post later today. Don’t worry we are doing well here :-D”

    Hey all,

Sorry I didn’t do an update yesterday. I was doing every piece of laundry I could find in my house LOL getting ready to finish packing up to go to Ugashik. Will try to get a post up on anonymous bloggers later tdoay 😀

Will try to keep y’all updated as best I can. So far we are doing fine here in Nunam.

    Ann 😀

Severe flooding hits Yukon River village of Emmonak (by Jill Burke) Sunday, May 24, 2009

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Residents in the Yukon River village of Emmonak say they are experiencing the worst flooding they’ve seen in years.

There are reports homes are flooding and that people in low-lying areas are evacuating to the school.

There’s more, but that’s the pertinent bits

Saying prayers for all our folks in harm’s way.

  169. austintx says:

We are discussing #97 over at the open thread.

@ #11 Isabella, austintx, curiouser, Canadian Neighbour and others re: sports complex discussion from previous thread:

The link to the WSJ provided by curiouser (#166 last open thread) and the problems child’s comment “I think the problem is that they broke ground on the project before the transfer actually took place, and then they were stuck.” pretty much says it all about the sports complex land purchase.

The timing of Palin’s house construction and similarity of some materials is interesting, though so far no one has found a smoking gun. At the time, there was basically one major source of building materials in town, so it could be just coincidental. I’d be curious to know how if the similar items came from SBS and how many other homes built around that time used those materials.

Re: Dave Hanson being related to Brad Hanson and/or Britta Hanson, I can’t help there.

Re: Metivas – There is no doubt they are social climbers, and in Wasilla, if one wants to be among the movers and shakers one joins the Wasilla Bible Church. It’s a good sized church, though, and not all who go there are close. I would guess that the Inaugural Ball appearance was one of those “agency” invites addressed to the Chamber rather than a personal one, though I could be wrong. I am not sure, but would bet that Marty ran unopposed for his city council seat, a fairly common occurrence. It’s a small town, and volunteers are appreciated, so not many organizations would say “no” to potential new members or even people anxious to take on leadership positions. However, the issue of how they could be active participants in so many organizations (instead of just using the names as resume builders) and how Marty could really lead the city knowing so little about its past and having been here such a short time, as well as his lack of actual accomplishments here and “Music Man” persona had a lot to do with his defeat in the mayoral race. You bring up a good point about money in the various organizations they belonged to – Personally, I’d love to see an audit of the Polar Plunge accounts, now that we know he’s written at least one $1,000 check to the Chamber.

Could be that the family Track went to live with was through a Metiva connection, but could be coincidental also. It’s not unknown to send hockey kids off to other places and families to further their careers. Local rumor has Track involved in several incidents around town, though, so I’d guess, but can’t prove, he was sent there, then to the military to straighten his act out. But we already knew Palin wasn’t a mother-of-the-year candidate.

I’d encourage anybody who finds concrete proof of wrongdoing to forward same to your favorite local FBI agent. They aren’t done cleaning house yet.

Many pictures were compared and sure seem to bear out speculation that the supply truck made 2 stops. And on the land deal , how much land are we talkin’ ?? I mean , 1.5 mil. is a lot of money to “overpay”. Especially on a parcel of land where it does not appear there was due diligence done and a free and clear title secured. BTW – Was the real-estate agent who handled all this the lady who recently set up the trust ??”
