Bird of the Week – Volcano Hummingbird
From a 39 inch bird, the Resplendent Quetzal last week, here’s a 3 inch bird, one-thirteenth the length of the Qutzel. This is the Volcano Hummingbird.
This little guy lives at elevations of 6,000 feet and higher, up to the summits of the mountains and volcanoes of Costa Rica and Western Panama. This hummingbird species is found nowhere else in the world.
Technical stuff: f7.1, 1/500th, ISO 400.

Sure, he looks harmless enough. Small. Cute. Fluffy. Feathery. Colorful. Sitting there on that wire, like nothing is wrong.
But inside he is a simmering bundle of barely-contained fury, just waiting to explode, lightning quick and utterly without mercy. Cross him and you will find out. Many have taken him too lightly and died regretting it.
It is not for nothing that this species has been tagged the Volcano Hummingbird. .
He will peck your eyes out, he will.
Hummingbirds are fascinating, and this photo is a joy.
Perfect , WC!
Hummingbirds fascinate me.
I didn’t realize there were hummers who do not migrate like this lil Volcano type.
Have been missing the (Rufous) hummers who summer with us here in SE Alaska .
They know even before the flowers do that summer is almost done.
