Bird of the Week – Rainbow Starfrontlet
One of the charms of hummingbirds is their marvelous names. This is a Rainbow Starfrontlet.
Hummingbirds have extraordinarily long tongues, to get at the flower nectar that is their primary food. This female is showing you a part of her tongue.
Technical stuff: tripod, f5.7, 1/250, ISO1250.

What a beauty!!! Thanks WC.
I actully am beset by a variety of humming birds, none of which I can recognize. I have several feeders arranged on my veranda to provide for them. They were originally attracted by some flowering plants.
I have a few nut trees which I am hoping will attract toucans. The birds here in Brasil are quite amazing
once you get your eye in and begin to notice them. The most astounding are of course the Macaws
who you can lure into a kind of docility if you provide the right food for them. I don’t attempt to tame them
but I do try to get them to trust that I am not a predator. So they will allow me to approach them. Once or twice
I have had a wild Macaw step onto my ourstretched arm and grip it it rathter painfully, they have good claws.
I have so far not been able to get a humming bird to perch on my hand. I will keep trying.
One can only hope….
I know this isn’t an open thread, but I want to call your attention to a documentary filmed in AK, about grounding, a/k/a earthing. It’s showing for free at this website until the 26th of October:

Health and peace, Muddies!
What an amazing shot, WC! Thanks so much. Rainbow Starfrontlet is one of the best hummingbird names.
