Open Thread – Likin’ the Lichen

lichen

There’s just something about lichen that’s so….lichable.  This combination of lichens is not unusual around here, and can be found covering large rocks at higher elevations above tree line. Photographed up close, they transform into beautiful abstract images that are positively artistic.

Enjoy the shiny new open thread!

    I don’t dye, too messy.

I piece and applique. Quilt by hand and machine. Draft a lot of my own patterns.

I think using batiks and then overstitching with contrasting thread could get you the effect you’re looking for. Perhaps silk rather than metallic thread.

  2. Isabella says:

Anyone else smiling that almost 48 hours and no crappy leak to Us Magazine or People about Levi, from the Palin, clan? Must be something amazing he could tell he to shut them up because we know they do not care about continuing harassments against the best interest of the children or Alaska reputation.

Rex Butler is my new hero!!! Tank is just pure comedy…VERSATILE VERSATILE!!!

  3. Isabella says:

Austin Says:”Should’ve turned her on to Janeane Garofalo !!”

Damn, J.G. is bright and quick. I remember her doing the rounds on the war to political news shows getting told to sit down/shut up because she was making too much sense.

  4. tigerwine says:

Quilters all – maybe we should take this to the Forum? I’m not too familiar with how that works, but if someone will start, Maybe we could even scrabble up a wall hanging for AKM!!

  5. QuiltAK says:

mlaiuppa – thanks for the info on photo transfer. sounds like it is probably best for a wall hanging or something that isn’t going to get a lot of use. I am a Batik nut – 95% of my fabric is Batik. The colors and textures are so rich and varied. Pretty sure I could find enough fabrics in my closet to match the lichen. I’m addicted, I’m afraid! A friend and I tried making our own a few years ago. The dying was fun and so was the Batiking (that is except for boiling the wax out!) My daughter wants to try this summer. I’m not sure if we can take over the garage or not yet. Do you dye your own?

I missed InJuneau’s comment about the art quilt earlier. sounds Beautiful! Art quilting is on my adventure to do list!

  6. honestyinGov says:

Has there been any word/updates from the Hope truck convoy…. or any word on the progress.?

  7. mlaiuppa says:

    I’m a quilter.

You can print a photo on transfer paper and iron it on. But it will probably fade over time with washings and will be difficult to quilt through.

There are also chemicals you can apply to fabric and run it through a printer and then iron it to set the ink. But that limits you to the size of fabric you can put through the printer. And not all printers like fabric “paper”.

If *I* were going to do a quilt of the lichens, I wouldn’t use a photo and try to print it. I’d go shopping for Hoffman batiks and I’d pick and chose areas that most closely matched or gave a feel for those areas in the photo, then I’d piece them together. Free form applique. If you’re really adventurous…then learn to dye your own fabrics and reproduce the lichens that way.

  8. QuiltAK says:

ChicagoMom – definitely no judging here. We homeschool at the moment. Homeschooling is pretty big in Alaska for a lot of different reasons and there are a lot of options. It’s not just for the wingnuts. both Homeschooling and Public schooling can turn out exceptional, average, and troubled kids. Depends a lot on all the factors involved.

  9. DrChill says:

AKM- Sarah- press release, giving foreign policy advise to Obama-
May 29, 2009, Anchorage, Alaska – Governor Sarah Palin called on President Barack Obama to take a firm stand against North Korea and defend the states and territories of the United States of America and American allies on the Korean peninsula.

This morning, North Korea launched its sixth short-range missile since Monday’s nuclear test. North Korea has also stated that it is no longer bound by the 1953 armistice that ended the Korean War.
    —————
Ouch Sarah the armistice didn’t end the war.
Notice the troops on the borders, the mines , the DMZ…
Nope the war did not end.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/northkorea/5397767/South-Korea-and-US-troops-raise-alert-level-over-North-Korean-threat.html
South Korean and US troops stationed at the North Korean border have been put on the highest alert level in three years in response to threats from Pyongyang of a military attack…

The first comment I saw was the funniest I’ve seen in a long time:

“With a signature like that, she’s ready to start a collection of housewares. ”

    Oboy.

    Nan

  11. ChicagoMom says:

Has anyone else read the GQ Levi Johnston interview yet? It’s available online. It was interesting to learn that Levi and Bristol were ‘homeschooling’ together online at her house. When asked if this was when Tripp was conceived he wouldn’t comment. My husband says it sounds like they were teaching themselves some sex education. This must be the period of time that Levi was referring to when he said Sarah must have know that Levi and Bristol were having sex, because they were basically living together. As a former homeschooler, I’m disgusted by this. Please don’t judge us all by this.

  12. crystalwolf aka caligrl says:

Yes she revealed his location (repubs are like that, yes they are 🙂 )
But its all a joke on the conservatives!!
    http://gawker.com/5272953/sarah-palin-reveals-top+secret-colbert-report-iraq-appearance

  13. QuiltAK says:

    Tigerwine –
what kind of class? That sounds pretty! What about an Ohio Trail and adding the lichen print in two of the four patches in the corners as well. Are you using the lichen print in the border?

Nan – I hate set in seams, too!

  14. Nan says:

Drat, the “star” quilts kinda run together for me… I’ll look up Ohio star – and it sounds gorgeous!

I’d been leaning toward maybe a star made in 9-patch form. Solid center – oh, that’s what you just said! Duh!

or one of those pinwheel types, using the diamond shape? Every other diamond a lichen print, the other ones various coordinating colors. Although that center seam can be a pain.

Or background for “card trick” I think that has another name, not sure.

off to find a picture of Ohio star

  15. ValleyIndependent says:

Oooh Tigerwine, that would be gorgeous.

  16. tigerwine says:

QuiltAK, InJuneau and Nan – how about an Ohio Star, with the lichen as the middle square, and the triangles picking up the other colors – one color in each square. Wouldn’t this be stunning with a black background? I’m taking a class, and have to make some samples, I just might try working with these colors. What fun!

  17. Aussie Blue Sky says:

It’s Saturday morning and I have chores but no Demo Memo to listen to. Does anyone know where CC has been lately? Housework isn’t the same without her. 🙁

  18. ValleyIndependent says:

Good for you Isabella. Sometimes even when you don’t think so at the time, something you said got through and the lightbulbs will go off later. At least you gave her something to think about.

My dad just last night was all scandalized because he had just read Obama really didn’t have a US birth certificate – that it was a fake. He’s convinced that the Hawaiian public official that said he had one must be on the take. I had to tell him that rumor had been debunked a long time back, and that there are so many people wishing it were true (starting w/ nuts4nitwits) that if there were a shred of proof, they’d have found it and broadcast it to the universe by now. It’s scary, though, that that rumor is still circulating.

  19. InJuneau says:

You could embellish with beads. In this year’s Capital City Quilters’ Quilt Show there was an AMAZING ocean scene that was miles wide with all sorts of cool stuff–hidden images in the quilting, beaded stuff, lots of 3D things. If you used fabrics that were already sort of patterned like the image, you wouldn’t have to add as much to make it work.

  20. QuiltAK says:

That would give it great texture! I was thinking about applique for dimension (I’m a bit of a needle turn nut) but that might not work well with a crazy quilt. Oooh, think of the different threads you could use!

  21. InJuneau says:

I, too, was thinking that a crazy quilt pattern would be the way to go, and you could use the stitching that it typical of old crazy quilts to make the black divisions between the sections.

  22. QuiltAK says:

Tigerwine, InJuneau, Nan and anyone else following the quilt topic. What about a very random bargello with strips of black/almost black between each piece? I don’t think I’d want it to be to linear, though, so maybe more of a crazy quilt type pattern?
Nan, I’ve never actually worked with the photo transfer fabric but from what I’ve heard it’s pretty easy to use.
Guess I should get my butt over to the stash club. I just got done washing and ironing a ton of new stuff that quit man bought for me!

CALI come one give some hints.

  26. Isabella says:

I was in Safeway today when the magazine lady was switching issues. I asked her how well or not well the Bristol, People, cover sold cause I cannot find sales of the issue on line. The woman didn’t even recognize Bristol, as she pulled an edition off the shelves saying that her region the copy did not sell People Magazine, last week well at all.

Then we got into a discussion how I was from Alaska, shamed I voted for Palin, etc… The woman was shocked at what I was updating her about the goings on and in a very accusing tone asked if I was a Democrat. I laughed, told her no, I am registered, Undeclared, never vote Democratic in my life but Palin, forced my hand in the voting booth last election.

I know this was mean, yet getting a very strong vibe this woman donated to one of Palin’s FRAUD accounts I had to inform her that anyone that would give up a hard earned dollar to Palin, when Palin makes over $135,00 a year, gets per diems which cover her living expenses, vacations, food, clothing and has had unlimited access to a state SUV until she refused to pay a minimum for personal useage…was not a very bright person….espcially considering Palin, inked a multi-million dollar (I do not really believe Palin, got more then $10,000 advance) book deal while begging for legal fund money moreover not itemizing the monies requested would go toward.

She basically shut me out but hey, I got my moment 🙂 for that ignorant comment she made about Obama being the force to take the good woman down cause he is afraid of her.

  27. Nan says:

Lisabeth Says “Isabella I sent you a message at twitter”

I just saw it. Thanks. Palin, she is a coward. Once her minions start reaping the wind for their abuse of stature in state offices they will turn on her so fast AKM won’t be able to keep up.

  31. InJuneau says:

Isabella–HA, another case of closing the barn door AFTER the horse got out, I’d say…

  32. InJuneau says:

Nan–I don’t know much about printing on fabric except that there may be types you can run through an ink jet printer that are on a paper backing then you peel it off and use it or there are iron-ons you can print on and then put on fabric. (BTW, this is the Open Thread, so nothing’s off topic here!). I am on the Forum (same name there). If you want to set up a thread to ask questions, go ahead. We already have a Mudpuppies Stash Club thread in the “Mudflats Clubs & Shared Experiences” section, so that might be a good place to add it.

  33. Isabella says:

UPDATE: WHAT A RELIEF! We are pleased to relate to you all that a Palin spokeswoman tells Ben Smith that we may continue to consider Stephen Colbert’s final Persian Gulf destination to be shrouded in mystery:

Spokeswoman Sharon Leighow e-mails: “The governor taped a shout-out for troops for the ‘Colbert Report’ to air next month. Steve Colbert will be in the Persian Gulf sometime next month doing some of his shows.”

Yesterday I was at the public library and they were selling off old books for 20 cents. Among the old pot-boilers I found two shiny items. They were sealed copies of a DVD called ‘Scientology: an Overview’. I asked the librarian how they got there, and she said she had no idea. This is a tiny part-time branch library in a tiny town ….. and I have to wonder where else these creeps have been leaving their propaganda, hoping to make contact with impressionable minds.

Scientology was banned in this State until 1982. I guess the recent Wikipedia decision may take the Government one step further in considering re-instatement of the ban.

  62. honestyinGov says:

We can’t be too hard on ‘ Missy’ about tweeting on Colbert.

After all… she is an expert on ‘International Security’… seeing as how she watches Putin all the time.

What if He is wearing a Hat though… would she still be able to recognize Him when his head pops up..? Hmmmm…..

  63. mae lewis says:

Thanks Sarah, you just put the troops in Iraq and Stephen Colbert in HARMS WAY! People who regularly follow Colbert’s show know that he will be going to the Middle East, and his continuing comedy routine was to say that it will be one of seven or so countries. On different shows, he would do a humorous spotlight of another Middle Eastern country. But, he said that he could not tell us where he was going for security reasons.

So, please people of Alaska who are good at filing ethics complaints and such as (to quote last year’s Miss South Carolina). This is like Geraldo mapping out troop positions on live TV. Sarah has just put alot of innocent people at risk, because Colbert would be a high profile target. Doesn’t that woman ever (1) read what she has just written? (2) look in the mirror to check if her outfit is appropriate? (3) listen to herself talk? (4) think first?

  64. InJuneau says:

Terpsichore–oh, you’re right, it does work much better if you channel at the same time! 😉

  65. Terpsichore says:

This is especially funny if you channel Dana Carvey’s “Church Lady” while reading it:

    57 InJuneau Says:

“Terpsichore–well, isn’t that magnanimous of them?!?”

Also, too, regarding Colbert, I only started watching him less than a year ago, and it took me a few epidodes to see what he was doing. I always laughed and enjoyed the show, no matter what stripe of politician or other was the guest. He has a very honed sense of satire.

  66. K8KZ says:

Those are some seriously ugly-butt red shoes she is wearing for such an official gathering. No wonder they had to pay those stylists and wardrobe people so much on the campaign trail! The woman has not a drop of taste or sense of style!! Nor a filter on her what is appropriate button!

Stephen Colbert has been joking for weeks about his trip to the mid-east and how he is not allowed to disclose the location nor the date of his trip for security purposes. In one episode, he is stricken by a poisen dart just as he is about to expose the date and location……….joking yet, but probably some seriousness to it. So maybe Scarah will be getting a call for her Tweet slip.
Did anyone see Megan McCain on the Colbert Report? Hilarious! At the end he read from a card that said the only subject she would not talk about was Sarah Palin and he then asked if she wanted to talk about that? No, not a word. Her silence screams and one day I can only hope she spills her guts after having been in the cat-bird seat during the campaign. She also had a bit to say about Bristol and her abstinence campaign and basically how ignorant it was to think that todays young adults could confirm to abstinence rules and is in fact promoting safe sex!

Isabella–not that I’ll check the Twit-er to find out, but if the twit’s tweeting that, isn’t that illegal or ill-advised or a major breach of protocol or something to let that info out? No one knew Sen. Begich was going to Afghanistan till he was already there…

Ah! Then ignore my numbers in post 38. The Tots got nothing.

To be fair, I actually listened to 2/3rds of Zieglar’s interview this morning on Bob & Mark, and they did announce he lost money, but did say that money from sales of the DVD would still be going to Toys for Tots.

Can anyone educate me about the availability of internet access in rural Alaska?

It seems like a number of our rural residents are pretty well connected to the internet. Since we need some more jobs out there, why do we not have call centers in places like Emmonak, for example? I just placed a customer service call that went to Manila, Phillippines. I often reach call centers in India. Is there some logical reason we couldn’t capture some of the money that goes off-shore for these call centers and send it someplace in the USA that really needs it?

“Over on Progressive Alaska Phil talks about Ziegler’s Movie screening.

About 375 people….attended….? Isn’t that number a little LOW for showing it right in the middle of ‘Palin Country’..?

Especially if Eddie Blowhard was on the radio promoting it as well. I mean who wouldn’t turn down the ‘opportunity’ to get both Ziegler’s AND Eddies autograph.”

Great snark on that last sentence honestyinGov! I was wondering how it went last night. I listened to the radio interview with him of Bob & Mark’s yesterday.

He said the theater seated 1000 – ” … and if we get enough people and we make a profit on the ticket sales, we’re gonna be donating that to Toys for Tots”.

375 x $5 = $1875 minus at least one airline ticket from LA ($600?) and at least one night’s lodging in a hotel ($125?) minus food expense ($100?), taxis or rental car ($50?), and whatever the theater charged to rent it out for the night ($500?) which may or may not have included payment for the box office personnel, cleaning staff, and/or any other theater representative acting as facility manager for the evening.

I’m guessing I’ve lowballed everything, so if I’m close, Toys for Tots got $500 out of it, and that would be great.

If I’m low by about 7% or more, then it will be “Here, Tots, enjoy your 6 board games by Hasbro and a Teddy Bear”.

Which, no doubt, will still be appreciated.

Someone on the OT at you-know-where reported the New York showing didn’t go so well either.

Ziegler’s doing what any filmmaker does, shopping his work, but pretty soon I think he will realize that using Sarah Palin’s name in the film’s subtitle (and so much footage of her in the film) was a HUGE mistake, because we saw, and we knew, it was not the reporters, it was not the questions, it was HER that turned us off.

Fear not, Ziegler’s film is well on its way to having a place alongside that other great documentery that was going to change the world: Remember Ben Stein’s “Expelled”? Anyone? Anyone?

    I thought not.

  99. InJuneau says:

The story….I was at the tax preparers office and she had some little animal objects by her computer. I brought up the ‘baby animals’ subject and was telling her all about the baby moose. (Romping in your yard… Mommy showing them off to You) Some chit-chat… and how I told her about Mudflats and being talked about in the “Bloggers on the Bus”… etc. Gave her the name and said check it out. When I got back there yesterday the first thing she said was “What was the name of THAT website?” She had me write it down so she wouldn’t forget this time.
Maybe she will ‘visit’… and stay. Spreading that ‘ Mud-Love’ 😉

Thanks, womanwithsardinecan, for sharing your reasoning. You make a very good point, though having watched the video of the woman testifying that she was unable to save her parents and others from a criminal carrying a gun even though she had a clear shot at him because she had taken her handgun out of her purse and left it in her car, we will just have to agree to disagree on this one. I do respect your opinion though, and always enjoy your thoughtful posts.

My perception of the Levi debacle is that a young man with a questionable upbringing was thrust into the spotlight against his will. I would have not been capable at the age of 18 to know what was in store for me in that situation. He is in the center of a storm now, and I do not think that being known as the baby daddy is a very good way to start out your young adulthood.

He is a victim as is Bristol. Can you imagine what all that “stuff” is doing to her head. Her mother’s big adventure probably made a big impression on her
What kind of future lies ahead for her? Selling Real Estate in the Valley and marrying someone who will be approved of by that family. She’ll be married in a year to someone with a nice bank account and good republican values. She’ll reproduce like her mother and do as she’s told. What a life, just sad.

  109. lexky says:

i read the gq article about levi and i dont know why but it made me a little sad. maybe because im a woman and a mother but he just comes across as a good kid that got dealt a kinda crappy hand. now if it comes out he has lied about certain things i will reconsider my opinion but im team levi. i voted hot by the way. cant help it. 🙂

Can’t get me to change my mind on the handgun. A Mossberg shotgun is just as good protection and you can’t hide it under your shirt to blow away innocent people. It is the easy hideability and transport of handguns I don’t like.
As for bear, I’ve eaten it. Good stuff. I’ve eaten mountain lion, deer, elk, reindeer, moose, testicles, snails, grasshoppers, bunnies, chickens, whatever. Food is food. As long as Levi eats it or gives it to people who need some meat in their freezer, I’m fine with the rifle.

  114. ValleyIndependent says:

womanwithsardinecan, I agree with you that rifles are fine as long as they are used for target practice (in appropriate places and with appropriate targets) and to shoot food.

However, I am also fine with handguns used for target practice and self-protection. We’ve had a few folks locally who have had unwelcome visitors. I hope you will re-think your anti-handgun position. Remember that it’s not the guns that are the problems, it’s the people that use them in inappropriate ways, and those guys aren’t going to care if having one is illegal.

sure are a lot of gun haters out there. I’m anti-handgun and anti-automatic, but if you plan to eat what you kill, nothing wrong with a rifle in my book. And my dad wore camos when he hunted, although he did hunt with a bow.
    ~~~~~~~~
    Woman, a article came out in GQ and talks about Levi “huntin’ and fishin'” I thought about this last night, come on, do you really eat bear? Or wolverine?
    There was several species of animals Levi says he hunts.
    I have been along hunting, deer hunting, and the deer was for food. Not a bunch of deer, one deer. (I wasn’t there when the deer was taken, thank god)
    They make Levi sound like he just goes around killing every animal in sight, and if that’s true, that’s not right. Its not hunting for subsistence its just wanton killing.
