Bird of the Week – Great Horned Owl

By far the most common owl in mainland Alaska is the Great Horned Owl.

This pretty lady came to visit the WC household when we were hosting Gus, Bird TLC’s Great-horned. Gus was in an outdoor mew, and attracted this girl. It was certainly the most convenient bird photo WC has gotten: from his deck, in his bathrobe, with a cup of coffee at hand.

A superstar of the raptor world!

I don’t take bird photos (I’m not much of a photographer, although I’ve gotten lucky with some neighborhood shots). Lately, a lovely robin has been visiting.

This one’s a beauty, and that DOES read like the easiest one ever. Gorgeous and fortunate!

These owls are uncommon in my part of Alaska. Beautiful, beautiful!

Side note: sure glad some bird photos come easily! Have seen Bob Armstrong here in all kinds of weather and over many, many hours waiting/looking for good bird and insect shots. Over the years I’ve often come across him heading out when the rest of we outdoorsy folks have had it with rain/snow/snain/wind.
