Open Thread: World Cup, Day One

The FIFA World Cup begins with the first game (4pm Eastern time or 12pm Alaska time) – Brazil vs. Croatia. If I was a betting man, my money would be on Brazil, home court advantage and well… they’re Brazil.

As a man without a team, I’ve decided that I’m playing it game by game. In Brazil vs. Croatia, I’m going to root for Brazil.

So I ask you Mudpuppies – who’s your team? Who’s going to make it to the finals? Who’s the underdog that’s going to surprise us all?

Check out the Guardians sports writers take on it all.

Make sure you don’t miss John Oliver’s amazing break down of why FIFA is evil.

To Mother Nature- You missed me,you missed me. Now you got to kiss me. Had dark blue skies for about four hours yesterday and lightning off and on last night, but nary a drop of rai to be seen.

  2. mike from iowa says:

mikey is just about to receive an afternoon treat-a rare daytime thunderstorm with flashflood warning. Rivers are already flooding. Looks nasty on radar. At least it should coo us down a bit.

  3. mike from iowa says:

Obama is the great equalizer and for that, dumbass dubya should be kissing Obama’s Black butt. Poor lil George and Osama bin Ladin were on totally different trajectories when dubya was appointed potus. Bin Ladin was a wanted man(dead or alive),Bush-not so much. Thanks to Obama’s deft handling of the bin Ladin situation, now neither man is wanted.

Stayed dry all night long and had some showers today already.Texas wingnut party platform says marriage is between natural men and women so where does that leave those with plastic surgery and viagra dependencies?

  4. mike from iowa says:

Nearly 3:30 AM,mikey time. Electricity had been off for several hours. Near continuous thunder and lightning and at least another inch of rain. Went upstairs to bed shortly after 10:00 PM and could see a deer laying in my yard about 20 feet from the house. Growled like a bear and got my lawn and lane fertilized. She might still be running for all I know.

    • mike from iowa says:

1.9999999999999999999999 inches of rain overnight. Got bayous and gators everywhere. 10 inches of rain since last Friday when I watered taters.More coming. Send hovercraft.

      • Alaska Pi says:

        mikey- I went and looked.
NE and NW parts of your state are a mess with flash flood, plain old flood, heavy thunderstorm warnings right now.
unfold those those lil angel wings of yours and get outta there!
me and the bears are waiting for your arrival here on the ridge.
crick is running good outta the icefields with a measly inch/day rain here but it’s 200 feet below this lil hill ridge

        • mike from iowa says:

Wings are wet and moldy. Never been farther NW than Sioux Falls,South Dakota. We’ll dry out someday and then cry for rain. I have no known allergies, but if I did,it would be an allergy to bears. From the looks of some of these flooded fields,we might be gaining on Alaska for amount of coastline we have.. 🙂

  5. mike from iowa says:

Pea-marble-sized hail, high winds, heavy rains almost no visibility and tornadoes all around mikey land. Been threatening weather all day. Thunderbird seems to have taken up permanent residency above my head. Not quite 6:30 Central time and it is almost pitch black out.Bet garden has had the snot knocked out of it.Wind still ripping through. Bet guys are glad they don’t have any wind turbines up,yet. Farmers corn crop could be in serious trouble if not rooted deep enough yet with all this wind and rain and hail. That is what multi-peril crop insurance is for. Can’t insure garden.

    • mike from iowa says:

4+ inches of rain since 6pm mikey time(9:01 presently). and it is still raining.

      • Alaska Pi says:

holy moley! 4+ inches of rain in a day?!
hoping your garden isn’t washed clear to wherever…
wet and breezy here after a couple days of sun- happy garden.
this place which grows such a magnificent forest is known for overcast skies (280 days heavy overcast, 320 with at least a quarter of sky cloudy ) and too many days of sun start feeling disorienting and out of whack.
but over 4 inches of rain in 1 day? eeks!

        • mike from iowa says:

Actually it was over five inches, hard to say exactly. Hail and wind and tornadoes were added bonuses(except for Pilger,Nebraska-two dead and 2o critically injured, town destroyed). Nearly allonion greens are broke off. Spuds were hit hard, but were in full bloom so they should be okay. More rain forecast fot the next 2 or 3 days. All because I borrowed 5o feet of garden hose last Friday from neighbor so I could water my spuds. You been feeling okay? You haven’t seemed to be you since you came back from vacash. Take care my friend. 🙂 🙂

          • Alaska Pi says:

I’m so sorry for the folks in Nebraska and I can’t get my mind around that much rain in a day.
            Poor onions also too.
            Dang.

I’ve been having a bit of a go since I got back with allergies and then sinus infection.
Much of Southeast had these clouds through May

            http://juneauempire.com/local/2014-05-13/green-haze-falls-juneau#.U6DYC3aFnbw

I could see wide bands of pollen all along the shorelines from the plane the day I flew home.
My lil wet coastal self doesn’t tolerate all the weird stuff dry air allows to happen.
We may not get inches and inches in a day but with 90+ inches of rain (and 80+ inches of snow) a year I mostly don’t have to worry about pollen here.
BTW it is illegal to whine about good weather here so I’ve not been saying anything much about it all 😉

    Culinary carnage. Bush done right-savagely. 😉 😉

  7. mike from iowa says:

I noticed my auxilliary,back-up,unofficial rain guage that takes 55 gallons of rain to make an inch was filled to overflowing this morning. I drained it once yesterday. It collects run-off from my roof that overshoots the gutters. So I have had at least 2 inches of rain since yesterday morn. I’ll check official guage later,if it stops raining. 🙂 My apologies, Ben.

    • benlomond2 says:

gggrrrrr.. bottle brush tree in front has turned brown,, having to leave off sprinklers in back to meet water quota… not as bad as in the seventies, where the phrase “If it’s yellow, let it mellow, if it’s brown flush it down” was the catch phrase…

  8. mike from iowa says:

Please join me,on behalf of the citizens of Iraq and all those innocent civilian casualties and American men and women who died or were maimed for life for nothing, in patting dumbass dubya on the back of his head in honor of insurgents starting to take control of Iraq. Iraq,if you recall, had a strong secular dictator who liked to thumb his nose at arbustos(shrubs or Bushes-take your pick). Well we sure showed them how to destabilize an entire geographical region and it only cost hundreds of thousands of lives and no one knows how many trillions of US dollars to let our sworn enemies set up a Sharia Law dictatorship. Kerist-you couldn’t hire someone to screw up this badly. All is not lost. Neo-cons may yet get a chance to re-fight VietNam in Iraq or North Korea if US citizens are dumb enough to vote them back into the WH.

Eyes only,Ms Pi. Lawyer Sara Frankenstein(sore loser extraordinaire} loses again in Montana.

    http://madvilletimes.com/2014/06/indian-voters-win-step-toward-equal-ballot-access-in-montana/

Unfortunately,Dems don’t seem to help in the lower 48.

    • Alaska Pi says:

mikey- something is haywire with the Madville blog. I can’t get to this entry either from here or there… dang.
      ————————————————————————————
“About the national party’s position on the Montana lawsuit, the Democratic National Committee’s voter protection director Pratt Wiley says the DNC backs the Montana reservation satellite offices in theory, but believes “technical” challenges prevent setting them up. The party seems to be counseling patience. “The heart of the question in Montana from the Democratic perspective [is] how do we get to where we all want to be. It has to do with those technical questions: Who has the authority to do it, and who will write the check?” he says. Still, Wiley says, the American Indians are a “core constituency” of the party.”

      —————————————————————————————-

Pffft! As this article goes on to say , Dems are leery of alienating folks surrounding reservations , Dems are amongst those who were sued, and the like.
The assumption that the Native vote will go to Dems , always, has been stood on its ear here in Alaska and will be there if those whaoos don’t quit talking out of both sides of their mouths.
Glad to see the parties settled- am hoping is without-prejudice so folks can come back to it if the state flops on its side.

Us whiteys get some of our own thrown in our faces Reverse racism or revenge?

    • Alaska Pi says:

      Satirical revenge!
And absolutely lovely revenge at that 😀
AND not nearly so derogatory as R***kins is.
Reverse racism is a myth by and large …

      • mike from iowa says:

Heard today some gubmint agency stripped Redskins of copyright protection or something along those lines.

        • Alaska Pi says:

Cancelled their trademark protection. Will be appealed .
Hope the effin R******n brand loses. Am so tired of the idea that using a racial slur honors Native peoples. Owner should change the name, make big bucks on the old gear, and move on cuz it rilly is about money for him/them.
          AGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

          • mike from iowa says:

You are sounding more like the Pi I’ve grown so fond of,even if I don’t like bears. 🙂

    • Zach Roberts says:

      I bought that t-shirt. It’s awesome.

  11. mike from iowa says:

Ben Lomond 2- your #$@&ing deer are eating my green beans and the tops off my sweetcorn(whorls) and I want them to stop it,or else. They pulled two freshly planted sweet potato plants out of their hlls, too. On the brighter side,I have a field of blooming taters with purple, white and yellow blossoms and I swear by all that is holey I will be pigging out on new potatoes by July 4th,if not sooner. Lettrs ready to eat,a damn deer haven’t consumed.. wed off the asparagus today for last time this year. Now it can grow back and go to seed. Send rain and one way Amtrak tickets to California for a flock of whitetail deer. Gracias,Amigo.

    • mike from iowa says:

I see IE is misbehaving some more. Have to switch to Firefox, again.

    • benlomond2 says:

no way , Mikey! 🙂 still have a couple of stragglers to put on the Greyhound bus with tickets to the “Field of Dreams” State… 10 ft wire fencing and lots of deer repellant working.. Plums and Pears getting bigger, now have to protect raspberries this weekend..getting handfuls almost daily now. Youngest wants me to extend garden- but she’s in Long Beach for the summer- Dad’s not falling for THAT trick! water restrictions in force here, drip irrigation is good, but back yard to get cutoff as soon as wedding occurs- gotta see about how to gray water that area..

Cantor gone, now, if we can just a lose few more of his ilk…

      • mike from iowa says:

Ran one deer out of the county last night. It walked right by my garden. Just had an inch of needed rain with more on the way. Amtrak assured me they don’t carry water for anyone. Sorry Ben.What logistics problems do you have extending the garden to Long Beach? Seems feasible in this day and age.I hope you guys perfect your laser and I’ll work on my end to teach deer to use rubber dinghys. Maybe there is a solution to both our deer problems-working together..

      • Alaska Pi says:

Y’all want some bears for deer control? 😉

        • benlomond2 says:

Only if you or Bear Woman come along as chaparones!!

        • mike from iowa says:

Bambi left me some of my buttercrunch lettuce,so I harvested some and cleaned and chilled it. Had some on a hamburger last night. Yummy. Onions are big enough to eat,but I’m gonna try for some size again.Drove up to mailbox and came back had another damnable whitetail standing almost where old house used to be and within 50 feet of my garden in the rain. State of iowa id funny about deer. Shoot one out of season and expect to pay upwards of 3 grand to replace, but hit one with your vehicle and the state isn’t liable for your damage done by their deer. 🙂
