Bird of the Week – Northern Pintail
If last week’s bird is obvious for its bill, the Northern Pintail is famous for the drake’s namesake tail.
Apart from the impressive tail, the white stripe extends up into the chocolate brown neck and the bill is silver and black. Altogether a handsome bird.
Like the Northern Shoveler, the Pintail is a dabbler, foraging in the top of the water column. As often as not, what you see are duck butts.

Good looking bird, great photo.
Used to see pintails in iowa back when I walked the river and shot a duck or two, last century. There was a point system on duck harvest so you had to be particular what and how many you shot.
And when you shot those ducks, mikey, what kind of camera were you using?
Model 97 Winchester full choke and it had a duck plug. It is nearly 3:30 mikey time. Do you know where your bears are at?
Nice one,Slip. You start the dance then waltz off and leave me alone on the dance floor. What? Am I THAT ugly? 🙂
Well, yeah.
I was not aware that Winchester made cameras.
Methinks you have some other agenda, one of which Quackers would not approve.
Very handsome bird !
And personally I’d rather see duck butt any old day than the road-rage/snit “bird” so common in some parts of my borough these days…
Where do these twits come from and why don’t they go back?
