Bird of the Week – White-crowned Sparrow
In the spring in Alaska, it’s hard to walk along a road or trail and not hear a White-crowned Sparrow. It’s often described as an “elegant little bird,” and it is certainly handsome.
Unlike some sparrows, the White-crowned is a bit of a generalist, occupying a wide variety of habitats and foraging on insect as well as seeds and fruit. The distinctive white stripe on the op of the head makes this an easy bird to identify in the field.
Camera geek stuff: f6.3, 1/500, ISO400.

Finally got to see and hear “I Got a Girl Crush” on Great American Country. Someone finally figured out the song is not about leadianism, although that shouldn’t matter. They ruined Chely Wright’s amazing career because she came out. Whata buncha Maroons.
Gonna git down to 27 tonight. Apple trees are starting to bloom. Goodbye apples. Asparagus is peeking through(we cut the bigger stuff yesterday),good-bye asparagus.Good-bye Spring.
eeks!
hoping spring wasn’t kicked flat with that frost!
Only got down to 29 and doesn’t seem to hjave hurt asparagus. Had the taller stuff cut the day before. Haven’t checked apple blossoms, yet. Celery all passed away after transplanting in house. Gonna try and plant more onions and spuds today. 🙂
Not the celerys?!! No!
We got our first over 50 degree day today- birds were as wild about it as we human types.
Lil boogers have been whooping it all day. Ravens on the ridge here have been downright jolly, lil BJs over the moon…
If you took the tail off one of these sparrows, the wings off another and put them on the third soparrow you’d have one sparrow minus a tail, one minus its wings and one with two tails and two pairs of wings. Actually it appears you would have the exact same bird just by interchanging wings and tails. All the effort seems to have gone into making the heads different colors.
🙂
‘cepting that the last 2 sparrows are different enough that they are very rare ( or uncommon ) in my part of Alaska. Their lil song sparrow cousins are making spring’s arrival quite cheerful here .
They ALMOST drown out the asshats in the Leg.
Almost.
Not quite. Thank heavens session is almost ( down to hours now) over. What a buncha.
