Open Thread – Palin on Today Show

On the next stop in the “Look at Me!” tour, seems our governor will be making an appearance on the Today Show with Matt Lauer. Topics are reported to be the future of the GOP and the escalating family feud with David Letterman.

In case you missed it, the response from Med Stapleton to Letterman’s 8 minute explanation, and admission that the jokes were tasteless, and renouncing completely that he would ever endorse underage sex of any kind, was this little gem:

“The Palins have no intention of providing a ratings boost for David Letterman by appearing on his show. Plus, it would be wise to keep Willow away from David Letterman.”

Keep Willow away from David Letterman?  So now we’ve got Meg Stapleton insinuating that David Letterman is a pedophile?  The Palin’s actually had some public opinion on their side on this one.   That is until the acid tongue of SarahPAC let loose with its usual over-the-top venom.

meg1

So what can we expect tomorrow?  More mangled talking points?  Exxon is our pal?  Franco Sarto red high-heeled cork shoes (not to be used as a flotation device)?  Quick, hide your daughters, it’s Late Night With David Letterman?  Disinvitation from the GOP fundraising dinner?

Those on the east coast will have the first opportunity to share it here.

Me?  I’m going to make sure I’ve had a nice black cup of coffee and splashed some cold water on my face before I catch it on YouTube.

    @Gardenslug
    If Palin didnt’ mind the SNL incest jokes about her family, is it possible that her real objection to Letterman’s joke is racial because ARod is brown-skinned? I just find her disdain for President Obama indicative of racist views and well, since her base likely shares those views, there’s probably some unspoken racial anxiety about that joke that a “white” girl would have relations with a “brown” boy and get “knocked-up”?

    very interesting point…she IS one of those extremist, supremacists that want to secede to keep their society pure and follow their own, corrupt rules of law, afterall…procreating left and RIGHT to increase the numbers…I hope Letterman sues her till the moose come home and wins!!! …and I really want them to find some connection between that whack-job 88 yr old killer and any of palin’s hate-mongering he was incited by…enough is enough! if AK can’t reel her in, maybe the rest of us can.

    Agreed. You’re right, it goes way beyond partisan politics.

    It’s really indefensible. Anyone that tried would be a lot like Beck claiming the Holocaust shooter was a “lefty” – politically, that is (because Hitler was so left-leaning).

    Yeah, right. and the sky is green, the grass is purple and the devil is ice skating to work.

    They really do have their own reality, don’t they?

  5. Closet Mudpup says:

    Nan & Sauerkraut

    It has been recently reported, twice I believe, that Tim Geithner has traveled to China to reassure them that we are credit-worthy. For his actions to undermine the efforts of the Obama administration, I believe Kirk should now be fully eligible for censure and any other penalties the House Ethics Committee can impose. This is over the line – and not merely an act of partisan politics.

  6. sauerkraut says:

    Kirk hates America. His part of IL need to tell him that he makes them ill… and that he’s borderline wack. His congressional colleagues need to censor him. Further, he “should not be believed.”

  7. Nan says:

    Closet Mudpup
    OMG, and they claim that PO is anti-American!

  8. Closet Mudpup says:

    While the neocons are pulling for an Ahmadinejad victory in Iran (it was they who embarrassed Iranian moderates out of power and ushered in the right wingers), b/c war is unlikely if the moderates win, one has to wonder just who America’s enemies actually are. And if there is any room left for doubt that Republicans are desperate enough for Obama to fail to facilitate it – no matter the cost to America – Rep. Mark Kirk (R-IL) on a recent visit to China, told the Chinese not to trust America’s word about budget numbers, and encouraged them to be skeptical about our credit rating. Yes, a sitting member of OUR Congress did that …

    Noticed that the person who used the name “Meg Stapleton” over on Gryphen’s blog claimed that using the governor’s name is a state and federal offense.

    I don’t know about the specific Alaskan law, if any re this, but there sure as hell is no federal statute about it. So real or faux, “Meg Stapleton” is wrong.

  10. Professor Geezer says:

    I do think Letterman has a clear legal case now against Sarah Palin for defamation of character, libel, slander, and possible threatened assault (what was she saying Willow would do to Dave???).

  11. Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:

    Oooops… this isn’t going well for Tabloid Tweetie. There are all sorts of new voices springing up on the Internet and media all over who are just horrified at this debacle. Mothers are discussing everywhere how SP is so awful as a parent to bring her children into this negative spotlight.

    No matter what the groups are doing (NOW), individuals are feeling indignant and very worried that she could be such a poor mother for dragging this out – and for Willow becoming a very recognizable name with nasty associations. I’ve been going from blog to blog, newsgroups, and media comments and if she thought this was a strike in her favor, she’s very wrong. We may not here these voices very often, but they are always there, within people who read, listen and VOTE. Take heart!

  12. Canadian Neighbour says:

    Isabella,
    I too noticed this morning she caught herself from saying riot. I’m actually surprised she did.

    Her and Todd have embellished this so much that I believe Letterman could sue them for slander and whatever else as the wording has been verbalized in very accusatory ways.

    Mel mentioned the reference to Sarah Palin’s basketball years and that mirroring what drives her today..
    I think perhaps she was a vicious little ball player due to her unusual gene / brain makeup but I also think .. she became fanatical about hearing the crowd roar! When she did something people cheered.. if she just played ball she wouldn’t stand out.. people would be seeing the team not the cuda girl

    She goes limp and haggard when interviews are serious and uninterested in her.. when an interview is all about her and there is a crowd.. that woman gets fire in her eyes..

    I think Dave made great sport of SP last night with the Top Ten about Regis Philbin, done by Regis Philbin, about why he (RB) could not be on the show last night. At the end, DL gave RB a huge bouquet of big red roses, just like a beauty pagent winner would get.

    I thought it was all too subtle and hilarious. IMHO, it was clearly about SP’s -yes-no-maybe-maybe not- typical response to speaking requests.

    Medicating young children is a problem beyond the Palins. Even if it is it is a prescription and legal it can be abuse.
    In Alaska Palin and the state are being sued for her position on medicating children in state care. As a working parent, and you have a child who needs to be medicated in order for you to do your job, do you chose your job or the child’s well being? Children actors get some protection from the state. Recently kate&8 have the Department of Labor looking after those celebrity children. Politicians can do whatever I guess. Palin’s children accompany their mother, they aren’t working. The whole situation with a premmie down syndrome baby with a heart problem needs to be looked at in detail. He was 4 or 5 months old at the time. For months of his young life he was on a grueling campaign schedule. He was seen and photographed going into a SNL gig, that was so his mother could appear in that comedy forum. That was after SNL did the incest skit about her family. Would she say she was exposing a child to perverts?

    That NOW article on HuffPo got me steamed. NOW also got an email from me…

    I have never felt more disappointed by a stand NOW has taken than I feel for your choice to support Gov Sarah Palin in her nasty, undignified spat with Late Show host David Letterman.

    NOW has silently turned a blind eye while Gov Palin, from day one on the national stage, has undermined the dignity and hard-won progress of feminists and competent women everywhere by overtly substituting her flirtatious and suggestive sex appeal for substance, intellect, honesty and merit. How does an organization that characterizes itself as a group representing the aspirations of women as capable, deserving and equal, ignore how Gov Palin has undermined serious, deserving women, and then go on to defend her disingenuous, outrageous and dishonest claims made against Mr. Letterman? NOW could better serve the interests of women by increasing the awareness of the lack of concern demonstrated Gov Palin when she, as mayor of Wasilla, was charging rape victims for forensic evidence kits, and to the indifference that she has shown as governor by her lack of responsiveness to her state’s having one of the highest rates of rape and child sexual abuse in the nation. Gov Palin has actively made the choice not to place a high priority on ending the sexual assault/abuse of the women and children of Alaska. Gov Palin’s record on the very issue she now pretends is so important to her – protecting women and young girls – should offend women everywhere.

    Instead of spreading that awareness and encouraging Gov Palin to take a new direction in establishing her priorities, NOW chooses to continue to give Gov Palin cover by lending credibility to her pretense that Mr Letterman’s jokes are more important in promulgating the problems of sexual abuse against women and young girls than is her own demonstrated, and as yet unacknowledged, indifference to those problems. NOW has been duped into damaging its own credibility by defending the outrageous claims of a woman who is abusing the sensibilities of others who have shown they genuinely care about this issue. NOW needs to take a serious look at how it chooses to pursue its priorities while protecting the organization’s integrity.

    Is Bristol in college? According to the Wolf Blitzer interview, she is.

    Sarah said (in reference to the fact that it was Willow, not Bristol who was at the game) that Bristol was “at home attending college and looking after her family”. I doubt she is starting her freshman year in June! Small potatoes, maybe, but it just goes to show how she twists the truth. Let me know if I’m wrong!

    Yup, it looks like the Barton Creek area. Either outside of the resort somewhere, or outside some big-whig’s house over there. Probably hanging with Perry since they are such big “buds” (why anyone would want to hang with p.rick is beyond me, but whatever). Sarah doesn’t show up anywhere unless she can be the belle of the ball, but you never know….. maybe she’s got some kind of secret photo-op planned. Good luck on your hunting!!

    Not really pain…just annoying itching! Can’t scratch it…dagnabbit! And you know the old adage about wanting to scratch an itch (no…not THAT one – sheesh!) makes it itch even worse. It’s true…

    OT…

    Got bite by a spider of unknown origin last Saturday and am continuing to have problems with the bite area….bite area a dimple in my leg, right need the inner knee bending area, then a raised ring, then about 1″ on either side that underneath is hard as a rock and red/heated. On an anti-biotic, but no relief from itching. Dr’s had me mark the current circle of irritation/redness for use in determining whether I will need to go to ER over the weekend if med’s stop stop the infection.

    Anyone got a naturalist way to help me with the problem of itching? Neosporin is not the answer for the itching…
    ~~~~~~~~~~~
    You could try aloe vera, either straight from the plant or juice you buy in the store. But I would be very careful with spider bite and follow Dr.s instructions! Spider bites can cause necrotic (dead) tissue! They need to be watched carefully. The redness rockhard/suggests inflammation from the venom. Try icing the area. Ask your Dr. if OTC antihistamines will work for itching. Spider bites are nothing to mess with.
  85. BuffaloGal says:
    Ha!! You made me laugh big time about the fact that your closed captioning went into meltdown trying to follow Sarah’s blathering. I never thought of that !!! Fabulous!
He could simply look at the camera after his first set of jokes and before breaking for commercial (so that it stays fresh in viewer’s minds) and say , “And….on another note…” and cut to the feed of the closed captioning trying to keep up with one of her amazingly freakish run on sentences. Once it ends, he does a classic Dave pause where he says nothing but raises an eyebrow and he then says, “Aaaand… we’ll be right back “.
    Is Palin headed for a breakdown? I am compiling a list of what I have seen on TV in the past 8 days and I don’t even know her.
    1) She plagiarized Newt Gingrich.
    2) She threatened to be a “no-show” at a GOP event, but then came to it anyway. They had to replace her as speaker because she was so erratic.
    3) She is in a fight with a comedian over something he didn’t even really say.
    4) She is now taking on the culture in America against women in the media, even though she herself:
    a- forced rape victims to pay for rape kits while mayor of Wasilla;
    b -made her daughter become a paid spokesperson for a sexy shoe company which targets tweens;
    c-laughs loudly HERSELF at degrading jokes about women on recorded radio & TV shows (e.g.,the “Lyda Green” incident, the Hillary remarks, the Montreal radio pranksters)
    d – never confronted Eddie Burke for the comments he made about Bristol and “going to keggers” last month
    e – has never upbraided Rush Limbaugh or FOX news for the degrading things they have said about women for the past 10 years
    5) Signed a contract with the one oil company most Alaskans do not want to be in business with.
    6) Called Pres. Obama “the candidate who must be obeyed” on NBC this morning.
    These are just off the top of my head. Anyone else?
    I am telling you: SHE IS MADE OF TEFLON! Everything that is thrown at her slips off. NOTHING sticks.
    REALLY scary, IMHO! I don’t know what or who it will take to stop her, but SHE MUST BE STOPPED!
  92. BuffaloGal says:
    I think the key here is to absolutely keep Palin in the public eye, constantly, from here on in. Get every single network clamoring for appearances, especially the early shows. If we can keep her on a round-the-clock circuit of “look at me and my indignation and how i won’t sit down and shuddup!” then, at some point, she’s gonna start making some serious blunders. She’s gonna blurt something big, tie herself up in her own rope and won’t be able to untie it fast enough. I’m convinced she’s taking something to allow her to keep this sort of crazy schedule and it’s only a matter of time before it causes her to snap.
    There’s a loooong time till 2012. I doubt it’ll take more than 8 months to get her packed and gone from the political arena. I was remembering today a sociology theory based on “the 100th monkey” concept. Per Wikipedia :
    >>By generalisation it means the instantaneous, paranormal spreading of an idea or ability to the remainder of a population once a certain portion of that population has heard of the new idea<<
    We on Mudflats and all of the other fabulous sites are the first 100 monkeys.
    Sarah Palin knows the Letterman joke had nothing to do with statutory rape. But she’s going to milk it for all she can. In many ways, it’s no different than her “no thanks” statement about the Bridge to Nowhere and her false claim to being a reformer.
    I agree, this letterman issue is a red herring! I posted about this 3 times and it got stuck in the tubes! This is the issue American should be talking about. Plagiarizing!
  120. Memphis, NY says:
    I plagerized this
    Top 10 reasons Letterman shouldn’t apologize to Palin:
    10) Who?
    9) People that name their kids after inanimate objects and horses have already set their kids up for bullying.
    8) Palin is too insignificant to warrant an apology.
    7) Sarah’s husband would have been watching the kids, but he was too busy chasing balls.
    6) Trig and Bristol….”what is hard math and NASCAR’s next stop?”
    5) He thought the kids were at the game to solicit political contributions from the Yankees.
    4) Letterman’s been doing the Late Night show since Palin was dreaming of one day working up to hawking snowmobiles to locals in North Faraway Alaska.
    3) At least he didn’t mention that Sarah was pressing Arod to date her daughter to get more TMZ face time.
    2) Palin went to the game because she thought the “Yankees” would be shootin guns at the Southerners and wanted to see a good old fashioned shootout.
    1) One word…”condom”
    What a spurious accusation those Palins are making against David Letterman! If Palin is going to take on the pedophiles. …
    _______________
    Let’s be clear about something… making jokes does not make Letterman a pedophile. When people, well-intentioned as they might be, use and re-use that label, they add credence to the Palin yapping about Letterman. Technically, pedophiles stick with younger kids, not 14 y.o.’s. Not that Letterman has done that in this instance.
    Let’s not add any more fuel to the Palin fire by incorrectly repeating their errors.
  124. Professor Geezer says:
    Is Palin headed for a breakdown? I am compiling a list of what I have seen on TV in the past 8 days and I don’t even know her.
    1) She plagiarized Newt Gingrich.
    2) She threatened to be a “no-show” at a GOP event, but then came to it anyway. They had to replace her as speaker because she was so erratic.
    3) She is in a fight with a comedian over something he didn’t even really say.
    4) She is now taking on the culture in America against women in the media, even though she herself:
    a- forced rape victims to pay for rape kits while mayor of Wasilla;
    b -made her daughter become a paid spokesperson for a sexy shoe company which targets tweens;
    c-laughs loudly HERSELF at degrading jokes about women on recorded radio & TV shows (e.g.,the “Lyda Green” incident, the Hillary remarks, the Montreal radio pranksters)
    d – never confronted Eddie Burke for the comments he made about Bristol and “going to keggers” last month
    e – has never upbraided Rush Limbaugh or FOX news for the degrading things they have said about women for the past 10 years
    5) Signed a contract with the one oil company most Alaskans do not want to be in business with.
    6) Called Pres. Obama “the candidate who must be obeyed” on NBC this morning.
    These are just off the top of my head. Anyone else?
    If S.P. had one tightened screw in her head she would of ignored it.
    Of course her base would rile up and Letterman would of given his clarification anyways.
    @BigSlick:
    Latest Sarah quote:
    Palin said “it’s no wonder girls have such low self-esteem in America when a comedian can make a remark like this.”
    Do girls in America really have “such low self-esteem”?
    I always thought American girls were pretty well-balanced myself, I certainly don’t see them as defective in general as Governor Palin does.
    Can someone help me understand?
    Agreed. Most girls and women I know here have fantastic self esteem and I personally think understanding humor is one of the big contributors. In addition, most girls (and boys) go through some sort of self doubt, it’s called adolescence and it’s part of the natural process of life, most end up just fine after being exposed to some of the realities of life–I’d even venture to guess those that use humor fare better, but that’s a personal opinion.
    This whole thing is now a circus and in whining about Letterman’s inappropriate joke Sarah has insinuated:
    -Letterman is a pervert (“Keep Willow away from David Letterman”)
    -American girls have low self esteem
    -Her mere presence will result in a ratings boost for Letterman
    -Letterman used the word or referred to the action of “rape”
    -Willow was at the baseball game
    -Willow would do something “surprising” if she were to encounter Letterman
    -Comedians and sex jokes result in rape and abuse of women (but of course, hateful rhetoric about abortion doctors, liberals, Pres. Obama, muslims, Jewish people, athiests, homosexuals, etc., etc.–those types of words are not harmful and cannot be blamed for the actions of those that listen and nod)
    Also invited were executives with the Denali pipeline project, a joint venture of BP and Conoco Phillips, as well as Palin administration officials.
    The meeting likely will be rescheduled for later this month, Vandergriff said.
Sitting in the chair is a teenage boy with his finger pointed to a key on the keyboard like he just pressed “Launch”. It also appears that he has an obvious erection.
    Now…if that is not offensive and vulgar I don’t know what is! And Palin is NOT outraged that her daughter (who is now preaching abstinence) is a psokesperson for this company!!!!!!!??????? I would love to find that ad and place it on every blog we can find.
    This phony outrage over Letterman is ridiculous. She is re-writing history with her words, not Letterman’s……he should be outraged that she is lying again.
    Take your ire out on Palin, not Alaska. There are very few readers from AK at this blog who voted for her (I’m remembering one or two in all the last few months) and since you were not here for the circus, and must be fairly new to the blog since this has been discussed for months in great detail, a blanket statement about AK voters is not appropriate or correct.
    Palin has succeeded in getting NOW (the National Organization of Women) to swallow her bullshit.
    They’ve inducted David Letterman into their Hall of Shame.
    But not Sarah Palin.
    Hmmm. What’s up with that?
    Palin made rape victims pay for rape kits. Palin took funding AWAY from abused women & young mothers. Palin ran on a ticket with McCain after McCain voted AGAINST equal pay for women doing the same job as a man. (Not to mention McCain’s many tasteless and offensive jokes against women and his wife.) Palin is AGAINST educating young women on safe-sex, Palin is AGAINST protecting a woman’s 14th Amendment right to privacy yet Palin exercised HER legal right to choice when she was 13 wks pregnant. Palin wants to deny ALL WOMEN that same LEGAL RIGHT Palin enjoyed. And now Palin is trying to rebrand herself as the defender of women’s rights? (Except for education, birth control and choice. And maybe voting and holding public office if she agrees with the Alaskan Teabaggers.)
    Is NOW just plain stupid? Why did they swallow Palin’s press release hook, line and sinker? Is the person at NOW that makes these decisions a Palin supporter?
    I really think we need to bring back the term “ranting lunatic” because if there ever was a classic definition of one, it is Sarah Palin.
    BTW, have you heard? She can’t commit to running for re-election. Really? Ya think? She can’t even commit to dinner.
    Don’t feel too badly, I live in California & we have Arnold. Texas has Perry…there are a lot of looney governors with a lot of ambition & power & unfortunately they often don’t have their states’ interest at the top of their list.
  145. Sourdough Mullet says:
    I really think Letterman should make a Top-Ten list out of this. Perhaps something about Palin’s history of taking the “not so high road” in matters such as morality, respectability, and protocol. I’m sure AKM and Shannyn could add to it, but here’s a start:
    #10 Hired a Commissioner of Public Safety who had received an official letter of reprimand from his previous employer for sexual harassment.
    #9 As Mayor of Wasilla, supported women by instituting a new policy of charging for rape test kits
    #8 Advocates self-esteem and empowerment of young girls and women by giving political speeches while wearing skin-tight skirts and red CFM heels.
    #7 Teaches her 14 year old daughter about dignity and self esteem by allowing her to go on political tour wearing Daisy Duke short shorts.
    #6 Publically called for “Backlash” against Alaska citizens who question her questionable ethics. Immediately followed by public backlash against a former state personnel official who wrote a letter pointing out that cleavage-baring clothing is not appropriate office attire for state employees.
    #5 Supports the rights of women by being publically “annointed” by an African preacher whose church’s doctrine focuses on “ridding the world of demons and witches.” After he declared that a local woman was a witch, she was stoned.
    Of course, the funniest thing about this list is that it’s all true, and it might shed some light about the reality of Sarah to those who aren’t normally privy to the day-to-day whackjobbery.
    We feel very sad, also, too, because we were duped (probably willingly, at the time) much of her personality and behavior was known but our esteemed MSM, the Anchorage Daily Snooze, “protected us” from it, that is, covered up for her. In all fairness, I think we wouldn’t have listened at the time. But things are much different now (I hope) in that blogs force more balanced journalism.
    i sent my comments to NOW…….thanks for the link Shadow Heart (see above).
    Even though i agreed with Palin’s initial statements about allowing an atmosphere of humor about sex and youth to be a bad cultural policy……all the statements she made before and after AND her own personal actions with her own daughters, as well as the women of Alaska that actually have been raped, totally discount any usefulness of this entire episode in changing said cutural policy.
    The higher ground would have been for her to (a) have not required rape victims to provide insurance information to cover the cost of rape kits, (b) to have fully supported the travel to DC for a rape prevention conference, (c) to have used her governor’s office to promote awareness to young women and the community to the abhorent problem of high rape incidents in Alaska, and (d) kept her daughters out of the public spotlight.
    but she didn’t do any of those things when they were appropriate to do…. back when no one was watching her on a national level.
    so now that she wants to go national — there is no “do over”. damage is done. this is one woman that won’t forget that point.
  178. rebekkah says:
    This last week or so for the Palin Drama series has opened a Pandora’s Box of revelation. As to SP’s character, the somewhat lack of integrity she demonstrates, her seeming addiction to stretch out her children’s drama in the media for personal benefit. If anyone had any doubts that the woman might be fit for governing any office, this week should have proven otherwise. Has she thought about their (kids) future? Everything that is printed about her kids and her responses will be in the halls of history forever? Is this the legacy she wants? She feeds the trolls, then wants to get interviewed to show her “horror”.
    Have read up on many leaders and politicians and they show positive characteristics, it’s refreshing, they seem to want the best, they want to leave a proud legacy. Nor do they once parade their kids on stage anywhere. Alaska seems not to be a priority. Her pre-occupation with everyone’s approval of her, everyone’s love, acceptance of her seems to be her priority. Feeding those media trolls by responding to every slight is HER priority.
    Her pony shows are getting nauseating. Please, Lord, that a kind family relative intervene for her!
The joke was in bad taste but if Sarah Palin had not chosen to make it all about her the majority of people in this country would not have even been aware of it. I don’t watch David Letterman, only because it is way past my bedtime but thanks to Sarah Palin I have seen more of him in the last few days than I have in a year.
  182. Doggonit says:
  184. Isabella says:
    Curious, is the Honeymoon over? Palin, went to Matt, not Greta?
  185. ds55 says:
    @EyeOnYou #3 — I found the YouTube video of the SNL skit you mentioned from last September where they suggested incest between Todd Palin and his daughters.
    As you said, just one month later Sarah appeared on SNL thus effectively giving them a pass on incest humor. She’s a hypocrite for trying to demonize Letterman after allowing SNL to get away with far worse.
    Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRXQ2ZueP5c
  186. Maria says:
    She wants to protect Willow from Letterman eh? You know, I get the serious suspicion that if Bristol and Willow had been Letterman’s children, they would have been a whole lot better off. Bristol wouldn’t have gotten pregnant, because Letterman and his wife would be the educated, sensible types who warned her about safe sex and instead of taking care of a baby, Bristol would be preparing for college, a real one. Palin and her minions are whipping this up into a frenzy. I do wish that Letterman would really let her have it about her parenting skills: exposing her whole family to public scrutiny, parading her pregnant daughter and boyfriend around, and not having her kids in school, unlike the Obamas, who obviously have their priorities straight. I keep waiting for divine retribution to kick in with this poisonous woman.
  187. Isabella says:
    I called the Anchorage GOV Office, they don’t know when Palin, is getting back but you can leave a message.
    Problem. No one is there to read them.
    Now if you wrote a note on a five dollar bill and sent it to her Wasilla P.O. Box, she might.
    delightful…..snark………don’t let politicians tell you mining is a good thing.
    “Just how bad has the coal ash situation gotten in the United States? So bad that the Department of Homeland Security has told Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) that her committee can’t publicly disclose the location of coal ash dumps across the country.
    The pollution is so toxic, so dangerous, that an enemy of the United States — or a storm or some other disrupting event — could easily cause them to spill out and lay waste to any area nearby.
    There are 44 sites deemed by the Environmental Protection Agency to be high hazard”
  192. Gramiam says:
    I look at the two young girls now occupying bedrooms in the family quarters at the White House and I say give a shout out to Barack and Michelle Obama as wonderful examples of how to nurture and protect and rear young children in the public eye. No train wreck there.
  193. Karen says:
    I understand there is a email going around encouraging people to boycott Letterman and his sponsors. If anyone has a list of his sponsors, please publish, as I will buy two things from each sponsor!
  194. scarlet...oregon says:
    And this one went to the “Cupp/Hannity” nonsense:
    “Cupp called on Obama to condemn the comments.
    Hannity agreed with Cupp”.
    Is Fox now the new home of The National Inquirer, because between Hannity delivering ‘half-ass’ news with edited film to defend his racist attacks…..and O’Reilly spewing wrath at Dr. Tiller till someone took him at his word and killed the man….then I assume they are doing ‘Scandal TV’ instead of journalism.
    Has O’Reilly apologized for contributing to Dr. Tiller’s death?
    Has Hannity apologized for slobbering all over Palin during his New York interview? Let’s not even get into the Anti-Semitics he drools over.
    When will the boys and girls at Fox call for Bush and Cheney to apologize for their Iraq war sending hundreds of thousands of people to their torture & deaths?
    As far as I’m concerned Palin deserves an apology when she apologizes to the people of Alaska for “Abuse by Neglect”!
  195. Lilybart says:
    http://gov.state.ak.us/
    It sure would be nice for then to get about a 1000 of these.
    If you are local Alaskans… a few phone calls to her Office might be in order.
    (would be interesting to hear what the feedback from the operator might be…? )
    And when does she slide back into Alaska….?
    A nice Airport greeting sure would be nice… especially if I could attend.
    A nice sign saying something like ” David Letterman is MY Hero”
    (should we have a sign thread just for GINO… those cereal names were FUNNY!)
  197. That David Letterman, what an anit-woman cad!
    The next thing you know, he might start charging people who go on his show for their rape kits, eh?
    Ot maybe he’ll fire the first public safety commissioner in the history of his show to advocate strongly for a new, much more aggressive approach against domestic violence and sexual assault, a week after he announces such plans, eh?
    Or maybe the next thing Letterman will do is get himself blessed by a nutty guy who likes to encourage people in Africa and Brazil to stone women accused of witchcraft, eh?
    That Letterman, he’s so anti-woman!
  198. scarlet...oregon says:
    Sent this to Huffington:
    Through the years there have been some pretty rank jokes made by ‘late night talk show hosts’ (does anyone remember the Clinton/Monica Lewinsky jokes?McCain?)……….I don’t remember anyone calling for a PUBLIC apology till Palin. She and Dude could have written privately to CBS/Letterman, but I believe she saw this as an advantage and another way to drive her followers even crazier while using her kids…again. How like her? By the way did she ever apologize for televising the ‘turkey kill’ or the wolf slaughters or charging for rape kits?
    Clearly I don’t condone the joke about her children, nor some of the raw jokes I’ve heard from other comedians on television. She’s made it worse for her children by not being more adult than Letterman was.
    Alaska is in a state of disaster with flood damage, people without food or money for electricity…while Palin is making a deal with the Big Oil Companies and prancing around in her heels being a martyr on tv & going down to Texas hopefully to plan to secede with Gov. Perry, but she is not governing her State. So is this the stance she would take as President? Stand still my heart!
  199. Memphis, NY says:
    What a bunch of morons if it wasn’t for the letterman bruha she would be looking out her window in Texas watching the tumbleweeds
  200. Marnie says:
    Oops didn’t proof read very well.
    Would even the Repugs risk putting this person in a position of national responsibility, especially if that position involved contact with foreign nations. Especially a person who reacts as immaturily as Sarah?
    Must less put our security at risk with someone who responses to real and imagined slights by slinging insults and lies?
    Maybe she figures this is the way to the rapture. Start WWIII by pissing of everybody.
    Quick waterboard her she IS a ticking time bomb.
  201. hedgewytch says:
    David Letterman is a very Rich and Powerful person in Hollywood. His ties go long and deep. The Palin’s DO NOT want to go on implying that Letterman is a pedophile. He may let the first psuedo accusation go, but if that line of thought is brought up again, the Palin’s may very well be talking to their lawyers again. And this time it will be against someone who can easily take them on.
  202. SMR says:
    I cannot take anymore Bible Spice. She is evil, vindictive & gives us REAL women a bad taste in our mouths.
    It is sooooo lovely living in Calgary — no Palin here, everyone here thinks she is completely insane, the weather is gorgeous, and tonight I am going to listen to David Sedaris at a local bookstore!!!!!
  203. mt says:
    I watched it, and they imply from Meg Stapletons comment that he is a pedophile, however, in a very judgeMENTAL and condescending way.
    I think they are making too much of it, and he did say in his apology he was referring to Bristol, the 18 year old didnt he? But either way it was an apology that was not accepted.
    As for the Palins boosting David Lettermans carreer, what a joke, if anything he would boost their ratings, the Palins think way too highly of themselves.
    Palin insists she wants Letterman to apologize to all women, for how he degrades them. And, no apologies from them on the fact that, they want to influence teens not to get pregnant, we would be naive to believe that they are serious. Instead Palin implies anyone who sides with Letterman is naive. Geez.
  204. Marnie says:
    Would even the Rpugs risk putting this person in a position of national responsibility, especially if it involved contact with foreign nations, who reacts as immaturily as Sarah.   205. Nan says:
    a thought:
    Letterman invited SP & Todd to the show, or even “just” SP. SHE is the one that said no, because it isn’t safe for Willow.
    Uh… Willow was not invited. Only SP, with or without 1st Dud was invited. Looks like Willow has now made it under the bus.
  206. Cynamen Winter says:
    Well done Blue_in_AK…I sent CBS a few myself, to thwart the feigned outrage of the outrageous.
  207. Wurzelhexli says:
    WAIT A MINUTE!!! Which community college is in session right now where Bristol is supposedly attending? (Wouldn’t a new high school grad start college in FALL, not SUMMER???)
    And ‘taking care of her young family’???
    So, did GINO admit that Bristol is the mother of BOTH Tripp AND Trig???
    HMMMM….
  208. Nan says:
    Sounds like we need to have psychological evaluations for so-called reporters, as well as for civil service.
    Good gawd.
  209. pvazwindy says:
    Sarah says that Bristol is in college? What college?
  210. Blue_in_AK says:
    My e-mail to CBS: As an Alaskan who has been watching Sarah Palin’s antics with horror since her nomination for vice president last year, I am in full support of David Letterman in this current dust-up with the governor. Were the jokes in poor taste? Probably, and Dave has admitted as much, but for Sarah and her mouthpiece Meg Stapleton to respond to his apology by implying that he’s a pedophile is beyond the pale. Please do not succumb to the pressure which I’m sure you’re receiving from the Sarahbots. The governor is an expert at playing the victim — in fact it’s her “go-to” MO. Don’t fall for it.
  211. Say NO to Palin in Politics says:
    the repubs are SO twisted!
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/joseph-a-palermo/glenn-beck-spins-the-holo_b_214118.html
    “Yesterday afternoon Glenn Beck and two of his guests argued that Adolph Hitler and the Nazi Party were “leftwing”; that “political correctness” led the committed white supremacist, James Von Brunn, to shoot a security guard at the Holocaust Museum in Washington, DC; and that ultimately President Barack Obama is the one responsible for the violence because his “bailouts” and “Socialistic” policies are engendering widespread anger. Beck denounced those who claim he is “churning the pot” because, he says, “the pot is already boiling.”
  212. DF says:
    And, again, responding to Duct Idaho:
    I have sent an email to Morgan and received no response.
    Let me just say that my comments have been “supportive” with questions about the motivation behind all the speculation. I find some of the speculation to be a little over the top. The passion behind the two websites has been interesting, curious, and somewhat confusing. I don’t know why my questions and comments would be less than interesting to them. But, perhaps, they would not be interesting to their audience either.
    I’m just saying that I thought the website was for conversation. I don’t know quite the reason why my comments would be lacking, in their minds. I’ve watched the blog for months and I don’t find them to be out of the ballpark for conversation. It has sort of burst my balloon in terms of reading it anymore.
  213. Nan says:
    Dangit. I had been thinking that a “mental climate” of something (as in “jokes” denigrating females or about racism or fear) can result in more of the same (denigration of females, or more racism or more fear). Not good. I mean, how can we claim O’Reilly’s rhetoric contributes to hate, yet give excuses to comments made by the left? (I know, the left isn’t certifiable, but still).
    If we want to say that words count, maybe we need to make sure our words say what we really mean, without hatefulness and be willing to speak up when something really isn’t appropriate. Shoot, we need to be willing to even SEE when something might not be appropriate.
    Anyway. Now, NOW is in the fray, giving the whole deal more credibility than it should.
    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/06/12/now-joins-palin-in-bashin_n_214851.html
    I really hate seeing two sides of the same coin, sometimes. It’s a pain and a bother.
  214. Doggonit says:
    Sarah’s behavior is childish and that of a 5th grader. If she wants to talk about a joke that was in bad taste… fine, try doing so in a mature manner. Letterman already agrees. He explained that he was referring to Bristol, who is an adult and a celebrity of sorts on various magazine covers and a national spokesperson for Candies. Bristol is no different from Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, and other celebrities. In other words, fair game for late night jokes which typically are a bit raunchy and over the top. Dave also already apologized and admitted the joke was in bad taste.
    For Palin to escalate this to Dave is a dirty old man and infer he needs to stay away from Willow is ridiculous. Like screaming fire if an usher uses a flash light in a theater.
    If Palin was actually doing her day job and working on a $ 60 billion project, she wouldn’t have time for all the nonsense.
    All she truly is doing is trying to get airtime in the hope it will generate funds for her PAC.
    Governors are boring. No one cares about another State’s Governor and most people don’t really want to hear too much about their own. Governing is pretty dry and boring work.
    Enough! Sarah get back to Alaska and your day job. And please try to keep your family feuding out of the news. Give us a break!
    Alaska’s reported rate of rape per capita is 2.6 times the national average (FBI’s Uniform Crime Report, http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/ucr.htm).
    Anchorage has the ninth highest sexual assault rate of any city in the United States, and Fairbanks is ranked first (FBI’s Uniform Crime Report, http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/ucr.htm).
    Fairbanks’ rape rate is 4.7 times the national average (FBI’s Uniform Crime Report, http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/ucr.htm).
Nine days earlier Abdulhakim Muhammad, a Muslim convert, fatally shot army recruiter Pvt. William Andrew Long, 23, in Little Rock, AR. The day before that, controversial abortion Dr. George Tiller was shot dead in his Wichita, KS clinic. And ten days prior to that the FBI arrested a four-man homegrown terror cell that planned to blow up two Bronx synagogues while simultaneously shooting down a commercial jet airliner. There’s something crazy and violent in the air lately, with much of it rooted in an alarming increase in intense right-white hate.”……….
    ………”Those piling on the Napolitano-bashing-wagon included leading conservatives such as House Minority Leader John Boehner, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and radio blowhard Rush Limbaugh. The attack on Napolitano was so vicious, so partisan and so premature but now she and DHS appear quite prescient, don’t they? Funny how two months and back-to-back murders by right-wing wackjobs can shine a whole new light on things.”
    “Right-wing extremism is on the rise in America. The similarities between the German madman at the podium then and the freakish bunch promoting their extremism today are astounding. Today, fringe groups are using issues like immigration, race, and big government as a few of their reasons for outrage. Just as they were in Berlin circa 1923, in America today fringe crazies are only a tiny minority with big mouths. But this time hate isn’t only directed at Jews. It is hate that targets anyone who disagrees with this tiny minority’s banal view of the world on topics like religion, politics and cultural mores. There is another similarity as hate politics rises in America. The overwhelming majority of citizens still lack the courage to shout down the hate talk of an absurdly small minority. That silence has been deafening these last eight years.”
  224. Nan says:
    Here’s the kicker re the Monegan trip: The conference he wanted to attend was free to law enforcement. He already had the travel voucher to pay his airfare. A copy of said voucher was displayed online somewhere.
    As far as I know, he never made it to the conference, thanks to SP. If he *did* make it there, please correct me! And as we all know, he was eventually fired supposedly because he didn’t share her priorities or some such. Insubordination, maybe.
  225. Bystander says:
    Palin/Prejean 2012! The beauty pagent loser/mean girl ticket!
    Showing oneself to be petty and thin-skinned is a sure way not to get elected to any political office, much less national office.
    I was worried Sarah would still be squawking when I got out of the shower…
    Finally, she went on to promote a very expensive, largely government funded project to get government owned gas to markets to benefit the government of AK, so it can pay more socialist dividends to the people of AK- and ends up with her tag line opposing government control and spending!
    Is this woman an idiot? Will anyone call her out on these inconsistencies?
    Rhetorical questions, both.
  226. duct idaho palin says:
    By the way, I’ve given up on PalinDeception. They seem to post comments only from folks who are FULL SUPPORTERS. And, they wonder why the MSM won’t tap in.
    Going after Palin in other ways seems to be the way to curtail her political future. So, I’m all for Dave’s humor!
  228. Say NO to Palin in Politics says:
    I think the repubs, conservative talk jerks and Faux news are using this joke business as a smoke screen distraction from their hate rhetoric connection to the Holocaust Museum shooting. That is a real issue. They’re trying to “make” this joke crap into a real issue.
    They should point out the hypocrisy of all of Palins statements and that THEY are exploiting the Children. As as someone noted Keith should bring up the rape statistics for AK as well in the conversation. Sarah is trying to make this a heated political story… the statistics are part of Her political record.
  231. Wurzelhexli says:
    WHEN WILL IT EVER STOP???
    WHERE IS THAT ICEBERG????
  232. Isabella says:
    She has no intention of doing anything for Alaska as gov again. You can tell, she is starting her petty vindictive streak against Alaska for not bowing and singing her praises.   244. Paula says:
    Watched the interview, how many times did she us “statatory rape?” I would feel more compassionate to her voice on this issue if 1) she didn’t use the rape term regarding the joke 2) If Bristol, a legal adult, hadn’t chosen (though likely by mother force) to be the national face of abstiance (after getting knocked up 3) if Palin didn’t dress slutty and 4) if Palin wasn’t the nastiest trash mouth politician in the country.
  245. Diane says:
    Does anyone else see the irony that the state Palin is governing has the highest rape statistics in the country?
    Why is no one asking her about that? She is concerned about a comedian’s off joke about her daughter, yet women are raped in her state at a higher rate then anywhere else in the US.
    She got rid of Walt Moneghan supposedly because he went on a conference without authorization on preventing sexual violence.
    So here again she is all talk with no action.
    I hope Letterman calls her out on the rape statistic. Rape has a worse effect on self esteem then a joke.
    Palin CAN”T run for president AND Governor because by the time the 2010 election for GOV is over, she will be in Iowa sucking up to fundies.
    there is NO way she can pretend to want to be Gov, while she is running for Pres.
    She would ONLY run for Gov if she were NOT going to run for President.
    I have heard some of the news on this and so let me be as clear as possible. I have said before and I will repeat again, I think people’s families are off limits, and people’s children are especially off limits. This shouldn’t be part of our politics, it has no relevance to governor Palin’s performance as a governor or her potential performance as a vice president.
    And so I would strongly urge people to back off these kinds of stories. You know my mother had me when she was 18. And how family deals with issues and teenage children that shouldn’t be the topic of our politics and I hope that anybody who is supporting me understands that is off limits
    And, I can’t recall who said it in the beginning of the Palin/Letterman discussion but I too also too want to kick Letterman in the shins for opening this door for her. Argh!!
    Not me. I’m positively delighted that Dave unintentionally opened this door for her. Remember, she has been carefully confining her interviews to only those “safe” interviewers like Faux News. Now she is eagerly accepting all comers in the belief that she’s got a righteous cause. She briefly uses her kids as an opening to wider political discussion, then she starts falling on her face when she can’t give a coherent or straight answer.
    Our prayers are answered, folks. Now her idiocy will be spread far and wide, cable and broadcast, for all to see!
  259. Priceless says:
    Ok. Figured it all out. She dressed Willow like a hooker, to see what she could fish for free publicity. She hooked Letterman – a very big fish. I think this was planned all along, and they lucked out. I feel that the statements were planned weeks in advance, with only a little tweeking from the mouthpiece. I’s like the queen for a day walk across the stage. All planned, to get her free pub’s. It just seemed like Palin was looking everywhere to get a story – any story – out. Her followers are so dumb, she knew that her fundraising was lacking, and she needed an influx of cash to pay for her half family vacation to the lower 48. So, they came up with this plan, in the hopes someone would take the bait (jail bait, in this case). Her blind followers will pony up more $$, to get the big bad media. I think it was all planned from the git go.
    That said, I did take the liberty of sending links to places the palin’s can purchase modest clothing for their daughters. I can see how it must be a huge problem in finding things that don’t make her or her children look like they walk the streets, from shops in Alaksa.
The institutional objectification and exploitation of women is and always has been one of the most destructive influences on the self esteem of generations of girls and yound women.
    I don’t see how you could “rape” any of the Palin’s anyway – seems to me they are all more than willing to spread them for anyone. You can’t “rape” the willing.
    Besides, Alex Rodriguez is WAY out of the Palin’s league – he would never stoop that low to have sex with ANY of them.
    There’s a great line in the Clint Eastwood movie High Plains Drifter, where one of the three outlaws is talking to his old girl in the saloon; “I could do better than you in a 2-bit fancy house” ! (Fits all the Palin’s to a “T” !)
    Back at Post # 51, I think sjk hit the nail on the head: Trigg is at home, bonding with his REAL Mother, because Bristol didn’t make the trip to NYC.
    Ummm… the day MY daughter’s “self esteem” or “comfort” or “lack of abuse” or any OTHER thing comes from a late night talk show host is the day I sit down with her and have a VERY long talk about where “esteem” comes from!
    It comes from within, not from beyond. It comes with confidence in one’s self that is nurtured by… oh, I don’t know… HER UPBRINGING. Her concerned parents that tell her she’s OK, no matter what her views, their support in her efforts, their unconditional love, etc.
    Palin is SOOOOOOO frickin’ far off the track if she thinks a lame joke at 11PM is “esteem shattering”.
    Then, she mentions the abhorrent Ziegler! Could there BE a more mysogonistic (sp?) idiot than he?
    PS: Who is taking care of little Trigg? Doesn’t he need a mommy and daddy at home? Or is Piper caring for him, in all her parenting experience?
    I can’t BELIEVE she and Dud would go away for THIS long with only one child out of 5. OK, Track is supposedly in Iraq… But then we have Slutty Bristol – running the house as the eldest. Probably having quite the hey day without mom and dad interfering in the party. Then we have little 8 year old Piper and littler yet 1 year old Trigg.
    Bristol made such a HUGE point about how “hard” it is to have one baby. HOW IN THE WORLD is she managing her own baby, her DS (supposed) brother, and a precarious 8 year old?
    palin went back to her fav “those hungry markets”. gag.
    she completely ignored Matt’s comment about the natural gas glut. the natural gas industry doesn’t need alaska gas because they are very busy trying to produce non-traditional forms of natural gas from shale formations in the northeast, and texas. Exxon has a history of jerking the state of Alaska around – not only on the retribution dollars after Valdez – but also the Port Thomson lease. Palin is pulling a fast one on the Alaskan voters — making them think the gas pipeline is going forward — by arranging a deal with a company that has not produced natural gas these past 20 years when they had the leases to do it……?
    oh – and she cleverly talks about the hungry markets in “north america”….not the united states………because that gas pipeline is going to Alberta Canada to be used to produce oil from the Alberta Tar Sands. Only after Canada is through with the gas will it ever be piped to the lower 48 (i believe Detroit was the destination – someone else may recall the exact location) and that was projected at 18 years AFTER the pipeline was built.
    i have no qualms about looking far into the future to plan for our nation’s energy needs……..and i realize that seriously large projects like the gas pipeline require extraordinary planning. BUT, i do not like to be mislead that this gas will go directly to the US…..when in fact, it will go to Canada first.
    if you notice the graphic on the Today show — it indicates the pipeline STOPS in Alberta……….see what i mean? maybe matt ain’t as easy an interviewer as i once thought…hmmm.
It’s a joke about Palin’s look. Who knows what he saw of her recent public displays. She did look out of sync for a politician and came off as low life in dress for some of the recent video and pictures. Who would she attract with that look and who likes that? Dirty old men. Letterman was not that, he was telling us with humor what she is looking like to others.
  287. jc in co says:
    After viewing the clip & reading part of the transcript, this is what’s bothering me. She accuses Letterman of creating low self esteem in young girls, connecting the dots to a degrading statement made about young women that does contribute to some of the acceptance of abuse of young women (sorry, just repeating her spewing wordsalad). Her daughter Bristol recently became spokesman for a program Candies sponsors. To me Candies ad campaigns are exploitative of tweens and are very degrading. I find their ads much more offensive then Letterman’s jokes. Yet, Sarah has no beef about that & apparently applauds the company her daughter represents.
But now there are increasing jokes, sly comments, and innuendos about GINO herself, and the longer she fuels this fire, the more Dave (and other comedians) will pick up every word she says and do a riff on it.
    He actually doesn’t need to say a thing. Last night on Dave, Kathy Griffin told Dave GINO was a moron, and the audience loved it. If she wants national exposure, she’s going to get it…right up the wazoo!
    These are two of the comments I posted under different articles on HuffPost
    “Sarah Palin has made her national career on the backs of her children.
    That she has no more decency than to do that, should tell the “family values” folks a lot about her.
    It is Sara Palin that has blown a passing moment of bad taste into a media circus. She has thrown both her teenaged daughters under her PR bus for the sake of her Greater Glorious Suffering.
    If she wanted to protest Letterman’s jokes, a letter from her lawyer or her spokes person would probably have elicited a civil apology from the Letterman. And probably a polite invitation to his show. He got a couple of jokes off on McCain but their on air time was polite and upbeat. Sarah would have gotten the same.
    Palin and the Dud chose histrionics and gross exaggeration and the introduction of the word rape and the publicity that those acts and word s would bring them.
    Sarah’s willingness to use and destroy those whom she uses to help her advance, go back to her earliest days in politics and probably earlier than that. She is a user and a backstaber.
    Don’t cry for Sarah, she loves every minute of the attention, cry for her children whose lives are being crushed to death by her greed and ambition.
    “There she goes again. Holding her children up for public inspection.”
    If she didn’t want them noticed and commented on by the media she should have left them at home and in school.
    How many times in the interview did she bring Willow to the public’s attention, to the press’s attention – in the last two days?
    Willow has been fortunate so far in that she has stayed below the radar of public scrutiny. Now it is Palin who is continuing to put Willow’s name as the focal point of a problem she, Palin, created and continues to create by wanting and seeking as much public time as she can scratch up, even if it means throwing her own children under the PR bus.
    If you have not read Bertold Brecht’s “Mother Courage,” take a look at the main character. She threw her children under the bus of the 30 Years War. Palin’s moment in history may not be as climatic as Brecht’s anti-heroine, but her selfishness is and her children are real, not fictional.
    The Palin family is not an example of the best and not even of the average American family’s ethics and morals. She sent McCain’s ratings over a steep cliff and continually embarrasses her own party nationally and has totally alienated her own party in her home state.
    Sarah, dear, the only reason you still get face (Mouth) time in the media is because you are cheap entertainment.”
    I don’t think this is a Palinbot statement. I take it to mean that by blowing this thing up, Palin took a joke made to an audience of late night TV, and now not only that audience, but everyone who watches TV, cruises the internet or reads a newspaper has heard about it. It was a tongue in cheek thing.
  299. UK Lady says:
    You get my drift?
  300. Sourdough Mullet says:
    Haven’t read the other comments yet, but my 2 cents is that it really looked like Sarah is teetering on the precipice of a nervous breakdown. I’ve seen all those symptoms in people who’ve ended up hospitalized with acute nervous disorders, often prescription drug-induced.
    I almost felt sorry for her (and THAT’S serious). It seems like Sarah’s out there running amok without any handlers besides Meg Stapleton, and frankly, she’s probably more nuts than Sarah. I’d bet money that she’s headed for a very public meltdown sometime soon.
    Let’s see what kind of behavior is in bad taste. Telling everybody that your 17 year old unmarried daughter is pregnant is in good taste? Arranging for her to pose with the baby and high school diploma for the cover of People Magazine is in good taste? (Hey kids, get your diploma and a pretty baby too). Having that girl advocate for abstinence when she has not practiced it herself is laughable and invites the worst kind of jokes. If I’m not mistaken, John McCain has made some pretty tasteless remarks about Cindy during the campaign. Where was the outrage about that kind of locker room humor? Finally, no one has produced a picture of Willow at the Yankees game. She is being mistaken for Rudy’s wife.
  319. ez.pz. says:
    I am beginning to notice a pattern in the word-salad of Sarah Palin (of Joel’s Army).
    1. When she refers to “… Americans… “, the subliminal message decodes to “Don’t dare ask me a follow-up questions about what I’m saying.”
    2. When she refers to “… America…”, the subliminal message decodes to “I haven’t got a single fact or a single reference which I can quote to justify the lies I am telling.”
    Samuel Johnson said “Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.” This is what Sarah Palin, of Joel’s Army, is – a scoundrel!
    She knows that her interviewer will be unlikely to challenge any statement containing a reference to “America” or “Americans”, for fear of seeming to be unpatriotic. She uses patriotism as a refuge! She hides her ignorance behind the name of her country. And, sadly, she gets away with it 🙁
    Why Sarah Palin, of Joel’s Army? Well, I think it’s about time this particular menace should receive some serious publicity e.g.
    “Sarah Palin, of Joel’s Army, attended…”
    “Joel’s Army member, Sarah Palin, said…”
    “Meg Stapelton, spokesperson for Sarah Palin, of Joel’s Army, said…”
    She’s had it too easy, for too long, about this aspect of her truly sick character. If, every time her name was mentioned, her name were associated with Joel’s Army, the MSM would be forced to pick up on it. She wouldn’t last much longer.
  320. EyeOnYou says:
    I think that Dave should let her have it full force. If he just shuts up it looks like a victory for Palin and her supporters. They will claim that they won and were able to silence him, and will just go after others in the same manner.
  321. Jim says:
    Here’s one comment from Lisa DeMoraes’ column in the Washington Post this morning:
    We as a nation and particularly the media, need to give this sub-literate less attention so that maybe she will get the message, go home to Alaska, crawl into an igloo and not inflict her moronic ramblings on the lower 48 anymore.”
    He should not mention her on air and just send out his lawyers.
  323. kerryann63 says:
    oh – oh – wait….I am having a deep thought – but it involves David Letterman so I guess it’s okay. I watched him last night and he only mentioned SP once, a pretty funny one about a hunting invite. He did not mention anything else really except to comment every once in awhile about being in trouble this week. After Stapletongue’s statement, and the interview this morning, I’ve started wondering which would be better: a full out snark assault (a la John McCain’s folly) or not mentioning her at all as if she’s just not important enough to mention? Which do you think would drive her crazier? Any thoughts mudpups?
  324. zyggy says:
    I think Palin is scared that Willow will do the very same thing that Bristol did, and Ellie May lashed out at Letterman for that reason.
  325. aussiegal77 says:
    The video is on HuffPo – I couldn’t stomach watching it. So I read the transcript…
    A few gems:
    *Palin told Matt Lauer he was “naive” if he believed Letterman was joking. Pot? Meet kettle.
    *She not only insinuated Letterman was a liar when he said he was referring to Bristol, not Willow, she also didn’t back away from the press release statement which indicated that Letterman couldn’t be trusted around Willow, a 14 yr old. YOWSER.
    *She said Letterman’s comments contributed to the abuse of young women. Gee – how refreshing. Demanding someone take responsibility for their words. I expect Palin to call out O’Reilly, Limbaugh, Beck, Coulter, Hannity et al for their hate mongering rhetoric day after day after day which contributed to the latest spate of domestic terrorism we’ve witnessed.
    (I know…..I’m not holding my breath either….)
  326. Zack says:
    “Well, if my child had been embarrassed by a joke on Late Night TV, I would certainly react by making sure everyone in the world who doesn’t watch Late Night TV knew about it, keeping it in the news cycle for three days.”
    Are you a Palinbot? Sarah palin is full of it! He was talking about Bristol Palin who is 18 years old. And, Sarah Palin herself, is not known for her truth telling skills. David Letterman, and many other comedians have been making tasteless jokes, for years. Where was Sarah Palin all those other times jokes were made about young women and girls? No where, that’s where. He’s also made jokes about losts of people’s kids. Yet she is the only one out there using the opportunity to exploit her children, so that she can get free publicity. It was the Palins who threw the 14 year old into the mix. They always do that. Throw the under-aged children into some kind of controversy. Palin should have never made her family a campaign issue. The Clintons were very protective of Chelsea Clinton, and the Obamas are very protective of their children. The Palins just parade their children around, which allows them to be under constant scrutiny. They actually WANT publicity for their children! They made sure Bristol Palin and the grandson were on the cover of ‘People’ magazine, for all to see. It was also the Palins whom used the word “rape,” and then insinuated that David Letterman was a pedophile. Now, the palins have crossed the line. They are slandering David Letterman. The Palins don’t deseve an apology. Sarah Palin was part of the “Hate-Talk Express.” Her kind of rhetoric has caused these right-wing extremists to act out violently. When is Sarah Palin going to apologize to President Obama? Never. She’s a hypocrite.
  327. short-timer says:
    Letterman should tell Sarah to just file an ethics complaint, then when her complaint is dismissed, he can tweet about it.
  328. lexky says:
    the nbc email didnt work for me. help
  329. Shadow's Heart says:
    Is it just me or am I missing something?? For her to make statements saying Letterman’s jokes add to the abuse of young girls is mind boggling. This from a governor of a state where domestic violence is ranked one of highest in the nation – check, incest ranked one of the highest in the nation – check, rape ranked among the highest in the nation – check, charges women for rape kits, check. These were at one time were someone’s “little girls”. She as a woman not only as a governor has done nothing to combat these issues in her own state and she’s going on about a joke made in poor taste. She’s the joke. It makes me wonder what kind of childhood she had that she has this gigantic disconnect from these issues, to me it seems to be more then just religious conviction. The fact that her sister is scared to death of their father, something doesn’t fit, I think the woman doth protest too much. From what I know about abused women from first hand experience is they usually become sexually withdrawn or sexually promiscuous. This is just my observation and opinion and is not based in fact by any means I’ve just wondered this for a long time now her views on this are totally “out there” I’m just wondering where it all comes from.
  330. Say NO to Palin in Politics says:
    Walpin was criticized by the acting U.S. attorney in Sacramento for the way he handled an investigation of Johnson and St. HOPE Academy, a nonprofit group that received hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal grants from the Corporation for National Community Service.   333. kerryann63 says:
    I watched part of the video (sound off, can’t stand to hear her talk). What’s up with the look? I don’t normally like to comment on a person’s appearance (and SP gives us sooo many other things to work with) but my gosh – that hair!! I know she’s probably trying to hide the extensions that everyone’s been harping about but she just made matters worse. It look’s like one of Phil Spector’s wigs. I see she used a smaller trowl to put on her makeup this morning but still a tad too much blush there GINO dear. Lastly, it’s coming on summer in Texas – and it’s morning – couldn’t she have worn something other that that tired looking black suit that she’s worn to at least 2 other appearances in the last few days? (meow – I know, just saying is all) Just a few shallow thoughts this morning – she really doesn’t inspire me to have deep ones.
  334. z says:
    How long has she been in Texas? Is that where she was left Trig and Piper? It’s not good enough for a fish picking birth but it works for baby sitting?
    Is it just me or does she talk faster and faster and faster with each sales pitch for the gas line?
    She will have a great career selling Adderall.
    She is clearly out to destroy David Letterman and show anyone who steps across her line of acceptable humor what will happen to them. It is all about “statutory rape” because she says so. Now Letterman’s name is synonymous with statutory rape. Wouldn’t old “I told you so” love to see him go down and for CBS media to eat crow?
    If she doesn’t like it, she’d better get out of the public forum. Parading your children around for politics is pandering and (gasp) could be construed as prostituting them for votes. The word “prostitute” does NOT have to imply sexual purposes. The word prostitute is descriptive of what SP does to get political interest. She prostitutes all her kids. Including the little one who appears drugged on a daily basis.
    I think this was Sarah at her most “dignified” and she presented herself as a snarky teen-aged member of her high school’s Student Council. Naturally, she can’t be expected to address Barack Obama properly as “President Obama,” because snarky teens don’t speak in that manner.
    David Letterman stated that he was referring to Sarah Palin’s 18 year old daughter and Sarah brushed that off – essentially calling him a liar. I believe Letterman 100%. The joke was tasteless, but Letterman clearly was not referring to Willow, who is 14. In this sense, Sarah is worse than many teens, who would not willfully distort what people. It’s a blatant form of dishonesty.
    Well I just can’t bring myself to listen the video with volumn on. Her remark re: Willow was uncalled for. She more than insinuates that Dave is a “dirty old man.” Two things happened here re: SP and Staplegun. 1) SP issued the “we wont go on Letterman (ny-nah) ” and added the “plus Willow zinger” and Meg in all of her lack of wisdom, abilities and control let it stay; or 2) Meg spoke to the governor and they both thought the little “Willow Zinger” was appropriate or funny or both. Meg has no control over this woman. Any professional “spokesperson” would have said “Hey Sarah this is over the top” or “Hey sarah you’re vicitmizing WIllow in the same manner you accuse Letterman of victimizing her” …or “Hey sarah…I am not issuing this statment.” They both love the limelight. I would love to know how they ever paired up as a team. My bets are Stapes is already looking for work in the lower 48.
    The mid-screech pic of Staplegun is priceless..any way to get it over to HuffPo?
Hummm. me thinkest you protesteth too much. Wonder what is REALLY going on in the Palin household, that Willow could not be trusted to stay back and play house with Bristol?
    Geeze. Get her OFF the stage, get her parenting lessons and keep her screeching voice and idiot ‘idea’s’ OFF the nataional radars.
  379. BlancheMadison says:
    Reading as I usually do here every morning before I get down to work (thanks as always to AKM and all the posters for their insight, wit and info–you make my day!!)
    IMHO, the Palins are no better than the Gosselin family of the reality show Jon & Kate + 8 in using their children to stay smack in the limelight. Their added comment on keeping Willow away from Letterman was over the top after their opportunistic whining about the Late Night kerfuffle. Dave is a comedian. They are very, very willing public figures. Ms. Wasilla was pushing her brood on the world from the very start–wouldn’t it have been, uh, TASTEFUL for Scarah NOT to parade Bristol, Trig (and Levi) around like show ponies during the campaign? And for young teen Willow to wear something a tiny bit more modest than hot pants at public appearances last week? ‘Nuff said.
    Now, Dave should take the bull (s**t) by the horns and start presenting the REAL SP to his audience. Perhaps his writers should read Mudflats and work the some of the very informative material found here into what I’m sure will be many future references? Just a suggestion . . .
    When politicians’ children who have become adults go out in the world and use their celebrity status to make money by expressing their opinions, they lose the mantle of protection afforded to “politicians’ children” and should be treated as the adults they are. This applies to “stick grenades up the babies’ butts” Reagan and to “look at my cute baby and all the attention I’m getting because of him but don’t have sex” Bristol.
    The hypocrisy of Palin using her looks and sexuality to attract followers, but then acting outraged when someone calls her slutty is a stunning example of cognitive disconnect. What appalls me is how many feminists are falling for her take on this. We need to be able to openly confront issues like a woman playing on her sexuality or the awkward details of childbirth. We can’t treat it like “secret women’s business” and still expect to be treated equally.
    And I want to know why we never see Trig any more? She carted that baby around with her everywhere during the campaign, he was her badge of honor and she never missed an opportunity to shove him in our faces. Yet she didn’t take him to the anti-abortion thing a few months ago, he stayed in the car at the recent teabag thing, and now he’s MIA again. Is it because his real caregiver, Bristol, now having Tripp can no longer travel with them? Because he can no longer reasonably be dosed into a comatose state? What’s going on?
    ________
    Yes, they put Willow’s name out there. Letterman never mentioned Willow’s name and so far as I know still hasn’t. He did point out, AFTER the fact that he was talking about Bristol and he had to read her name off a card. And to the best of my knowledge no one has come up with a photo or any video showing Willow at that game.
    Let’s not forget that not only did the Palin’s put Willows name out there but they included all their daughters names on their statement. Or Todd did anyhow. Instead of just saying…my daughters, he named each one of them personally.
    Tell me they aren’t using these kids.
    From the story on Huffington Post:
    Later, Lauer pressed Palin to explain a line in a statement from her spokesperson that “it would be wise to keep Willow away from David Letterman.” Lauer asked, “Are you suggesting that David Letterman can’t be trusted around a 14-year-old girl?”
    “Hey, take it however you want to take it,” she said. “It is a comment that came from the heart that Willow, no doubt, would want to stay away from David Letterman after he made such a comment. And you can interpret that however you want to interpret it.”
    “Well is that not perhaps in bad taste also, governor?” Lauer asked.
    “No, it’s not in bad taste,” she said. “Hey, maybe he couldn’t be trusted because Willow’s had enough of this type of comments and maybe Willow would want to react to him in a way that maybe would catch him off guard. That’s one way to interpret such a comment.”
    What the heck? The stuff she’s saying here about Letterman is crazy enough, but what is she saying about Willow with this last bit? Is she speculating that Willow would do something (what, I can’t imagine).
    She’s shoving Willow into the fight herself, she’s doing a classic, “Let’s you and him fight.”
    Oh, and Sarah is also too the ADULT and should have DEMANDED that Willow dress more appropriate to the event and publicity it was bringing on.
    To have a comedian pick up on the whole Slutty Palin Household isn’t really a far stretch. The dots are connected quite easily. Much easier than Palin’s round about way of connecting them.
    __________________
    Anybody who thinks that Palin is making too much of a big deal about the Letterman “jokes” “feud” is completely missing the big picture. Palin and her fans complaining ad nauseum about Letterman’s “jokes” really has absolutely nothing to do with Letterman or his “jokes.”
    This feigned complaining is all very clever misdirection.
    It is intended to change everyone’s attention from last week’s disastrous story in HuffPost about Palin having been caught plagiarizing. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/geoffrey-dunn/palin-plagiarizes-gingric_b_212228.html)
    And, as an extra bonus, the Palins get to play victim again and keep their name in the news.
    So, you can be sure that Palin and her fans will continue to “drag this out” for as long as it takes until everyone conveniently forgets about Palin’s plagiarizing problem.
I was shocked to actually be able to understand what the heck she was talking about. (but, it was only two minutes afterall. i’ll have to catch it on youtube later )
    My theory ? I think she’s been paying close attention to the likes of Mudflats and all of the other great sites that have her totally pegged and she’s reverse engineering , in a way. By watching what we’re all calling her on ( her wardrobe, her attitude, her word salad, etc) and she’s making changes. She’s toning her voice down, she’s going to start dressing more professionally, she’s paying attention to attempting to speak in proper sentences. (good luck on that one!)
Matt then asks “is that also not in bad taste Governor if you are suggesting that a 62 yr old man couldn’t be trusted” and Palin responds..”no it’s not in bad tastes..it’s not in bad taste”…and then goes off on reading an email from her blackberry someone sent about people needing to rise up and take a stand against these kinds of comments that lend themselves to easier acceptance of abuse…when Matt gets a disbelieving attitude and asks how she can connect the dots between a joke and abuse of kids, …she finds a way to do it by claiming that these kinds of comments allow people to be more accepting of poor treatment of girls which in turn leads to abuse.     I, for one am going to stick by my guns and not waste time on this person. The best we can do is ignore her existence just as much as possible and use the system to see that any credible evidence of her misdeeds is brought to light and she is prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Anything else is a pure waste of time and only serves her aim to keep herself before the public. I hope David Letterman has the good sense to leave this entire mess in the dust and not respond further to her thirst for publicity. People are already beginning to see her for what she is. Let the woman shoot herself in the “Franco Sarto red high-heeled cork shoes”, and not allow her to distract us from our purpose, which is to mitigate the damage she has done to Alaska as much as possible until she can be defeated. I am getting somewhat uncomfortable at the tone of remarks about her lately. I feel like we are letting ourselves lose sight of what really matters, Alaska. In the scheme of things, Sarah Palin is a flash in the pan. Her 15 minutes has been over for some time.
    Sorry for the rant, but I have seen and heard far too much insanity on the TV and radio this week. This is just too much!
    It is going to be very interesting to see how much more Palin is willing to drag this out (the Letterman Feud). I just posted a comment over on the forum about this and don’t really want to cross post like that, but why did Palin not take issue with going on and doing a SNL show after the dust up with them regarding Todd & the girls? That was much worse than this in my opinion, but Palin had no problems doing the forgive and forget with that situation and happily allowing herself to be used and mocked on the very same show just a month later.
    Excellent point. Today comes on in 15 minutes here. They’ll probably tease for a bit. KO went after the Palins last nite.
    I want to kick Letterman in the shin for giving this Chooch another reason to be on the airwaves. Shame on him for bringing her more press.
    I loved the top 10 list, but it just gives her fodder for her victimhood. Hopefully, the more intelligent ones of “them” will understand that he’s a COMEDIAN. Not like the Queen, who wouldn’t understand subtlety if it struck her in the noggin. HARD
    What a spurious accusation those Palins are making against David Letterman!
    If Palin is going to take on the pedophiles, which I would applaud, she could start in Alaska where the rate of child sexual abuse is high.
    Besides, I noticed there were no objections to Eddie Burke salivating on air over Bristol during her abstinence tour radio interview with him. He’s much closer to home and therefore more of a possible danger to her young daughters, no?
    And, to cast aspersions on Letterman when Palin’s biggest cheerleader, Limbaugh, is the one that visits known child-sex-tourism spots is beyond hypocrisy.
    Lastly, EyeOnYou, I agree with you that the SNL incest skit was much more objectionable than any of Letterman’s jokes.
    First let me say, SP is so full of it. Also, she just wants to stay in the lime lite no matter what at the cost of her kids, husband, mother and dad, it does not matter as long as she gets her face out there. Shame on the media for wasting their time and ours.
    Second, Meg Stapleton looks drunk in the above picture. Does she always look this goofy?
    Arrrgh…I missed it. I lost track of the time and just caught the last minute where Matt asked her if she felt after all she had done and being the VP nominee last election was she entitled to “first refusal” on being the face of the GOP and she replied that no, no one in the GOP felt that way, instead they were all about walking the walk and not just talking the talk!
    In my opinion all she (and her family) cares about at this point is getting in the news and staying there. They are of the mindset that there is no such thing as bad publicity and if it is bad, they just play the victim card.
