Bird of the Week – Eurasian Collared-Dove

WC has received complaints that flycatchers are boring, and that readers want to see more unusual birds. All right. How about a Eurasian Collared-Dove at Maclaren River on the Denali Highway?

If you look at a range map for this species, you’ll see that officially they barely make it into Canada. Yet this Marco Polo among doves turned up in the mountains of interior Alaska. Here it is picking through straw along the road from a dog musher’s winter camping spot. The species was introduced in the Western Hemisphere in the Bahamas in the 1970s, and has explosively expanded its range to most the United States in less than 50 years. Including, apparently, Alaska.

Camera geek stuff: f6.3, 1/320, ISO500.

BTW WC you misspelled my last name. It is McClaren-not Maclaren.

If you changed collared for collard, would that change the equation of this bird?

Also, I just spotted this over at the Washington Post:

My deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

Eurasian, huh? Looks like a refugee so how did it slip past right wing nut job haters in ‘murrica? Any way it can carry weapons or ‘splosives? I guess wingnuts could paint identifying numbers on that little collar to keep tabs. Nutters will have to pass special legislation designed to keep doves from voting for sane Libs in the next election. Noticed the pelage isn’t pasty white, either. Not good for the bird’s sake.
