Open Thread – Bear!

bear

Look who came to call this morning!  I’ve seen this guy around a couple of times but never got a picture.  Actually, I didn’t get this one either.  I credit Spouse, the morning person, who was up and able to grab the camera while I was still sawing a log.

He’s a very shiny and handsome black bear.  Not particularly big, but his ears seem tall to me.  I’m glad we have a black bear this year.  Usually there’s only one bear that hangs around and it’s either black or brown.  A couple years ago we had a big mangy looking brown bear that wasn’t afraid of anything…  Made me a little nervous.

Buf the dog let’s us know when our friend is around by letting off a sort of snarly howl.  It’s definitely not a ‘buf.’ I call it her carnivore bark.  Of course, to be fair, bears are omnivores, but “omnivore bark” just doesn’t have the same oomph.  The bark/howl/snarl is followed by a big ridge of hair on her back that stands straight up on end.

I’m not too worried about our moose calves.  They hung out in the yard for 3 or 4 days, and then took off with Mom for parts unknown.  I hadn’t seen them until yesterday.  They were way down the road, a good distance from the house, so they’re making their rounds and expanding their territory.  All looked happy and healthy.  The little ones already look much sturdier than they did those first wobbly days.

    @ Sarah’s Ghostwriter

    Thank you for part 4 – I’m taking a week off ALL Palin crap except your story!

    “She screeched around the corner on two wheels, taking out some blue Winkies collecting money for Special Olympics. “Reminds me. Give the kid another peanut.””

    You are as twisted (in a lovely way) as lynnrockets!

    He has no Alaska experience that qualifies him as A-G, IMO – I’d be wanting a little more than clerking. But Alaska experience doesn’t matter because this year Sarah has a very heavy program for bringing numerous anti-environment lawsuits against the federal government. She has millions and millions and millions of Alaskan dollars set aside for this purpose – in addition to her #1 in-house bullsh*tter, Bill McAllister.

    I’m sure the cult followers will be impressed to bits.

  11. Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:

    I meant to say murdered violently. I think any unexpected death comes as a shock, but when it is mixed with lack of information and deep anger it seems to magnify the loss and make it very hard to move on.

  12. Martha Unalaska Yard Sign says:

    @redwoodmuse

    Our family recently suffered a horrific tragedy – my young nephew was killed violently. Before this, I had NO IDEA how much help it is when people step up and say something to acknowledge this pain. I used to feel as though I didn’t have the right words when something awful happened to someone else – and now I know that there are NEVER the perfect words for such events and feelings. It’s the time someone takes to say hello, shed a tear, give a hug, or tell you they are sorry that your family is suffering that matters. It matters so much to me, and my sisters.

    The mudpups here probably saved the sanity of my sis – the thoughts, prayers and love was overflowing in every post to her blog, and every word uttered to me by local mudpups. We felt surrounded by a calm and caring crowd. Who knew that caring “strangers” could wield such power?

    So I am now sharing all that love and support with YOU and your family. I close my eyes, and visualize that your son in law will have a successful surgery and come out of this OK. I visualize you and your family being surrounded by light and love. My best to you, and we really DO CARE even though we are a bunch of muddy people you wouldn’t recognize in a crowd. We are here for you.

  13. TBNTJudy says:

    Please keep redwoodmuse and her family in your prayers. Tonight will be tough for them all. She is on the forum if you would like give her some support.

    Thanks,
    Judy

    It was really funny when Smirky slipped up and said Animal Rights groups were for Palin, tried to cover up, but Rudy was giggling like a girl by then and then Smirky couldn’t help laughing. Rudy was even trying to pretend he was laughing at something else minutes later.

    I also think that there is doubt about Willow actually being at the gaame, needs following up on.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I don’t think she was there. And this whole thing was a non issue until the echo chamber made it a federal case.
    Don’t you think Rudy would of mentioned meeting cute little willow? She was back at the hotel with Heather and her son! I’m sure of it.
    It is odd that Rudy didn’t confirm that Willow was at the game. Possibly because he didn’t want it to come back on him should the information that she wasn’t there be revealed? Why else would he not back up the Governor’s story? It is also interesting that both spoke about the flight attendant issue. Methinks that is the remark that really got Gov Petty’s ire stoked up.
    This came out the day after lettermans show and there was no mention of the joke about willow, b/c the echo chamber hadn’t blown the whole thing up yet. You can even hear rudy and smurke LAUGHING about the joke!(slutty flight attendant)
    “I said to my soul, be still, and wait without hope
    For hope would be hope for the wrong thing; wait without love
    For love would be love of the wrong thing; there is yet faith
    But the faith and the love and the hope are all in the waiting.
    Wait without thought, for you are not yet ready for thought;
    So the darkness shall be the light, and the stillness the dancing.”
They are going to remove his skull to try to let the brain swell as much as it wants, with the hope that it will then go down with less trauma. This increases all kinds of risks, but was the best option. I’m trying to remain hopeful, but I have a bad feeling about this.     Not sure if the link I posted from ADN is working. GINO has picked a new AG, another Dan Sullivan. He looks extremely good on paper so it begs the question: what’s the catch?     #110 EyeOnYou Says: Z~ What was the excuse given for Palin going on SNL? I don’t really have any desire to register at the AK Standard just to read the article.
    The excuse was on the Mansour site, not AK Standard.
    I can only sum it up from memory. Something like she was too busy being a gov and running for office. Having better things to do she didn’t watch the show, therefore she didn’t know about the incest skit. To be accurate, you’d have to read what they said. I can try to find it later, but not up to going there now.
    Her McCain handlers must know nothing about late night tv or pop culture? They just toss any unvetted candidate out there to wing it. The McCain handlers were too busy scrubbing websites in Ak to keep her current about where she was going or what she was doing? Have you ever heard of her having any responsibility for anything she does?
    I thought she looked hungry to do SNL and prove what a player and sport she was.
    I found the Mansour site’s excuse for Palin doing SNL after the incest skit about her family one more lie on their part. They know it is not about sitting around watching tv that keeps a candidate up to speed.
    @Samper #83 I agree that the troops in Iraq are not fighting to protect our freedom of speech. I believe the original mission statement had to do with WMD in the hands of a ruthless dictator. Then the mission changed a few times, but it was never about OUR freedoms.
    As for our freedom of speech, I’m thinking back to to original Declaration of Independence, which did, in fact, launch a war, a revolution if you will . We fought the British on our own soil, and protected the freedoms for which we fought with the Constitution and Bill of Rights, which followed some years later.
    Sarah does not speak for ALL women; she speaks only for herself. She includes her daughters as props for the argument; she have a much harder time saying that SHE was insulted. Easier to say that Dave insulted THEM and ALL women. No he didn’t; he only insulted a few people in the Palin family, maybe a baseball player and a former governor. He regularly makes fun of Donald Trump, who is also a regular on the show– some people know how to ‘take it’ and other use the moment for more tabloid theatrics.
    ————————————-
    The regular Morning Glories that I started from seed have dried up around late fall and the vines dry out and die. All those seed pods (on the dry vines ) open and drop their seeds all over the ground and those will restart next year. You can collect the seeds as well. The other variety I have I think are MoonFlowers (same family) but they are always green and never die off.
    Oh well, I see her slowly sinking into oblivion and I think this incident solidified her throne on the top of “Fring Group Real USA”.
    “I went on the wrong email and I inadvertently hit the wrong button,” Goforth said. “I’m very sick about it, and it’s one of those things I can’t change or take back.”
    Why do I have this feeling that there must be a genentic identifier for the Right different from the Left, as these words could so easily have been GINO’s.
    A comment I noted was “what stuff is floating around that DIDN’T go to the wrong people” and another noted “using government owned equipment on government time”. That has a familiar ring to it.
    I bet DL is relieved, oh boy, the queen accepts his apology:
    from faux noise:
    Sarah Palin has accepted comedian David Letterman’s apology made during Monday night’s broadcast of “The Late Show” for crude jokes made about her and her teen daughters last week.
    In a statement to FOXNews.com early Tuesday, the Alaska governor said, “Of course it’s accepted on behalf of young women, like my daughters, who hope men who ‘joke’ about public displays of sexual exploitation of girls will soon evolve.”
    “Letterman certainly has the right to ‘joke’ about whatever he wants to, and thankfully we have the right to express our reaction,” Palin said. “This is all thanks to our U.S. Military women and men putting their lives on the line for us to secure America’s Right to Free Speech – in this case, may that right be used to promote equality and respect.”
    ~~~~~~~~~~~
    Now since she talking about sexual exploitation of girls, what about Candies??? hmmmm???

    AKM, could you write a similar compare and contrast the Hypocrite of Wasilla on her Exxon deal? The inability to remember the SCOTUS thing with the Valdez, supposedly standing up to Big Oil, her so-called energy experience, etc. She needs to be exposed for creating a distraction for the piss-poor week she had. That and her track record of BS.

    Aussie Blue Sky: Are you suggesting that California become a Socialist state like Alaska? Tax oil companies and spread the wealth!! Why don’t Californians OWN the resources in CA like Alaskans do?
    ——————————————
    It’s a shocking state of affairs, isn’t it? It seems to be a pattern that California is easily controlled by outside interests. Betcha they never thought they’d be facing bankruptcy when they voted that one down.

    But I’m not suggesting CA should become a Socialist state like Alaska – Arnold isn’t a good enough actor to get away with that.

    I’m not trying to start a trend but as soon as a state or region begins to have wealth the big money guys come in and take over everything, startng with politicians. At that point local interest is helpless.

    It amazed me you could have a black bear wandering around outside. I an really thrilled to hear news of the moose family. Please excuse my ignorance here – but do black bears (like the one above in AKM’s backyard) harm moose?

    Yes they do. They eat a variety of plant and animal foods, but moose is definitely in a bear’s diet. AKM

    Since this is Open Thread.

    I wrote John McCain today, (who defended Chaney’s continued verbal assaults against our national defense under Obama, by demanding a retraction from Panetta for speaking the truth.) to the effect that:

    Chaney gives no facts to prove his point
    Is disloyal to the Commander-In-Chief
    Is insulting our military and national defense personnel.
    Is the only VP in the history of the US to actively try to so distract our CIC from protecting this country with anything like Chaney’s intensity.
    Is making this country look weak and thus encouraging an attack on this country.

    If he has facts to back his claims he should request an impeachment investigation, as it is his duty to come forward with proofs.

    I know you mudpuppies can come up with many even better points.

    This is an opportunity to address specific re-electable RepoTaliban Senators and Reps who defend Chaney, and who spoke out against Panetta, who might be pressured to at least stop defending Chaney.

    Sarah and the Geezer of Oz Part 4

    “Scary and I are the Reddest,” said Joe the Tinner. We don’t have hearts.” “I don’t either,” replied Sarah. “Had it replaced with a fuel injector in the Year of the Red–’00 donchaknow.” On she drove, knocking down pedestrians, both red Muchkins and blue Winkies with abandon. “Shoulda called the red ones Winkies, she told Scary. That’s a name I coulda remembered, also.” Scary agreed. She screeched around the corner on two wheels, taking out some blue Winkies collecting money for Special Olympics. “Reminds me. Give the kid another peanut.” “Right.” said Joe.

    “The Ruby City!!” went up the cry. “Where’s the Geezer!” They immediately abandoned the bus for Sarah’s plane (“Like these Red Monkeys,” she thought. “Just wish and click.”) and grabbed the AK47s. “My rules!” shouted Sarah. “Shoot any wolf, uh, Geezer that moves! Prizes for legs!” A huzzah went up from her comrades as Joe the Tinner wrapped the kid’s fingers around the trigger. “Hope the safety’s on,” said Cowardly. “What safely?” said Joe. ”Don’t worry,” Scary interjected, “Kid’s had plenty of nourishment. He’ll be fine. Throw us another six pack, Joe.”

    The plane swooped over the Ruby City and Sarah zeroed in on the NGO and took aim at the Geezer, who was there to greet her. Suddenly, Joe the Tinner’s eyes rolled back into his head and the AK47 shot repeatedly through the plane, forcing her to land near the now obliterated NGO. “Look at him run! “ shouted Cowardly Terrorist as the others chased Geezer across the lawn, firing bullets, before the Secret Service intervened. (Wonder what kind of secret services these guys provide?” thought both Sarah and one of her cronies who ascribed to “don’t ask, don’t tell.”)

    “What are you Doing!” demanded the Geezer. “Pay no attention to the kciD yenehC behind the curtain! I’m running the show, and you’re thr—-” He was ready to dump her from the NGO gig when he caught sight of the Red Monkeys. “Just wish and click!” thought Sarah. Drool ran down from the far right corner of Geezer’s mouth. He was hers!

    The past 2 weeks I’ve had to stop having my single cup of morning coffee because my nerves couldn’t handle Palin, the right wing barking moon bats, the Letterman insanity AND caffeine. Something had to go and being as Palin won’t cooperate, it had to be the coffee.

    So, I went to the cupboard this morning to dig out a new box of tea and some I had picked up on sale last month. To all of you tea lovers out there that haven’t yet had this, do make a mental note to try finding it. Absolutely fabulous! I’ll let the website entice because it’ll do a better job of it than I can:

    We are starting to have greater numbers of bears here in the Adirondacks – 50 miles north of Albany, NY in the Lake George region. We hear the bears at night calling to each other and some are close by. They sort of sound like owls with a question mark sound at the end of each call. We’ve lived here over 30 yrs and I don’t remember hearing them ever before while our kids were growing up and liked to sleep outside in tents on warm summer nights. I think I’d be uncomfortable with that now!

    We had bear cubs, and a variety of other animals in to visit the story time kids. I got to hold a cute little bear while the BC guy talked about wildlife etc.

    That evening my dog greeted me at the door and gave me all sorts of guff. She spent the evening guarding and cursing the laundry hamper.

    As far as I know she’d never encountered bear smell before, but she knew she didn’t like it.
