Bird of the Week – Chestnut-backed Chickadee

This is a colorful cousin to the more common and familiar Black-capped Chickadee.

Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Juneau, Alaska

Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Juneau, Alaska

This is a bird of the far west and southeast and southcentral Alaska. While it is less vocal than its cousins, like Black-capped and Boreal Chickadees, it nests in cavities and readily uses nest boxes. During winter, they forage in mixed-species flocks with other chickadees, primarily Black-capped and Mountain Chickadees, as well as other small birds such as Ruby-crowned Kinglets and Red-breasted Nuthatches.

Here is some real news- the world’s safest pipeline, the one Drumpf and fellow shareholders want to run under Lake Oahe and the Mighty Mo has ruptured in a creek 150 miles North of Standing Rock Rez. It is not even in full operation yet. Brand spanking new electronic sensors failed to detect the spill. So much for guaranteed safety. Pipelines leak. It’s what they do.

I must apologize for this story. It was not the new pipeline that leaked. It was a much smaller, older one that has had numerous leaks. Still the oil got into a tributary of the Missouri and since the creek has froze over, I can about imagine some of that crud crude made its way to the Missouri under the ice. My sincerest, humblest apologies to everyone not associated with DAPL. 🙂

It IS..a beautiful lil bird..and so, I must say I ..without the proper glasses..the day this was..first posted..read the title s: ..”backed BY chestnuts”. Sigh. Now I apologize greatly..as I see it daily. Birddom..please..forgive me!

juneaudream, I need glasses. I keep putting it off since I have an old pair of reading glasses that suffice at home. I better get my one free pair from Medicare while there is still a Medicare to get them from. The future of social programs in America are seriously threatened so the wealthy can have more tax breaks. That is straight out of congressweasel Paul Ryan’s weaselly mouth.

Now there is a pretty bird. Thanks, WC
