Open Thread – Endless Skies
We’re getting close to the end of our virtual flight from Houston to Anchorage. I knew the clear skies couldn’t last. As soon as I was sure we must be over Alaska, the clouds rolled in. At first I was sad to miss the scenery, but cloudscapes have their own beauty. I remember my first airplane ride. I must have been 2 or 3, and when we popped out over the top of the clouds it seemed absolutely magical. I remember asking if we could go jump on them. I’m several decades older than that now, but I still look at them and think it would be awfully fun if you could.
As I was marvelling at the whiteness of the clouds as far as the eye could see, and the impossible blueness of the sky, this song came on my iPod which just made the whole thing even better.
Thanks for that song

Speaking of the crazies – Michele Bachmann was at it again:
“This cannot pass,” the Minnesota Republican told a crowd at a Denver gathering sponsored by the Independence Institute. “What we have to do today is make a covenant, to slit our wrists. …
_____________
She’s gonna slit her wrists??
We can only hope to get so lucky. …
She’s yet another reason to favor healthcare coverage reform.
where can i get my very own brian the moose??
pat, I’m over in chat…
oh, monitor screen size and/or resolution could be it, maybe…
I’m grasping at straws here.
califpat, can you ask one of your friends to get a screenshot of what they’re seeing? Not sure if that will help but that’s the best I can think of at the moment without sitting right next to them.
Also, I’ve had that prob before and would be able to see if it looks the same.
My friends says they cant see anything on the right hand side at all. Anyone know why?
I ask them do they see the Blogger 08, Strongheart Memorial Fund, Play with Palin, or Mudflat’s Forum, and they cannot see any of this.
Thanks, Justa
@Aussie Blue Sky: I was really proud of that woman!
@califpat: sometimes the the links on the right had side of the page disappear for a while, but they come back. If that’s not it, maybe it could be their browsers?
I have a couple of friends who are trying to join Mudflats. They entered their names and email addresses in the “Leave a Reply” section and were able to post, but they were unable to see all the other sites on the right, like “Mudflats Forum” or ” I Heart the Mudflats”. Because of this they were unable to have access to the Forum or chat. What are they doing wrong and what should they be doing? It has been so long since I first joined that I dont remember the correct procedure. Help!!

@65 not that sarah –
I’m really sensitive to artificial sweetners and never, ever use them. Also can’t take meds. Again, sensitive head. I actually get buzzed on advil. (honest)
Never thought to look at the ingredients of the iced tea because the bottle looked pretty much like the regular one. Didn’t see the word “lite” for almost a week.
Anyway, for anyone that wants to know more about reactions to Splenda, here’s a website http://splendasickness.blogspot.com/2006/03/heart-palpitations-accelerated.html Personal accounts (and lots of ’em)
@BuffaloGal , I ‘m so glad you figured that out! I get migraines, and a while ago I ordered a very cheap book from Amazon which detailed how many sweeteners (other than real sugar/honey/etc) can bring migraines about. I finally quit Diet Coke (my drug of choice), and get much fewer headaches.
As an interesting aside, for a while, I took a drug (Topamax) for migraines which treats both seizures and migraines. I’m wondering about the connection between the seizures, migraines, and certain foods, due to the other symptoms you described.
Just as a general FYI to all: I highly suggest googling Topamax before taking it. I deeply regret not having done so.
Where’s Piper? Is her mother keeping her out of school again.
Confirmed……Willow Palin indeed is going to high school at Colony High School in Palmer…….not Wasilla. People in Palmer have children in class with Willow there. A commenter at Immoral Minority had stated there was a rumor Todd had moved out of the Wasilla home and was living with Willow. Looks like it may be true. There would be no good reason for Willow to be going to a school other than Wasilla High.
Hey folks – A word of caution to those using SPLENDA sweetner –
Some of you might remember a few days ago I was dealing with severe dizziness, headache, heart palps, etc. Blood pressure ended up being terribly elevated. It’s been a little better than the first two days but I’ve dealt with it every day since it started.
Well I figured out what was causing it. My son picked up a big jug of Arnold Palmer’s Lemon Iced Tea last week. I’ve been drinking it daily, with the largest consumption the first two days. Today I noticed the front label and saw for the first time that it was marked “LITE”. Flipped it around to read the ingredients and they included Splenda sweetener.
Sure enough, looked it up and there were all sorts of pages talking about the effects some people will experience and dizziness, migraines, heart palps, elevated blood pressure and many more were listed.
Just wanted to share this in case it could help someone in the future. Needless to say, the stuff’s getting poured out ! Thank goodness I figured it out.
Fawnskin, didn’t see the post about your husband–good thoughts for him as well. (It’s cloudy here, so hope it moves inland faster.)
new post
Email today from MoveOn for anyone who’s interested in helping the health reform push:
Dear MoveOn member,
After a few weeks of health care craziness, there’s good news: we’re winning on the ground. Lots of town halls are now dominated by supporters of health care reform. The vast majority of Americans want the choice of a public plan.1 And a powerful bloc of progressives in the House is standing strong on real reform.
The really bad news? The media’s still acting like President Obama’s health care plan is on the skids.
If we don’t turn the conventional wisdom around before Congress begins voting on health care, we could be in big trouble.
We’ve got a plan to make it happen. It starts tomorrow with major vigils across the country to bring the media’s focus back to the real people suffering under the current health care system.
And then we’ll shake up the media story again by going on the offensive against Republicans, with a new series of tough ads that call them out for their ties to the health insurance industry.
But to actually make a big splash, we need to raise $185,000 today. Can you chip in $20 right now to help out?
https://pol.moveon.org/donate/healthcare_ads.html?id=17087-17222743-XRVp7hx&t=3
Right now, Republicans in Congress think they can get away with viciously slandering President Obama’s plan for a public health insurance option—even though 77% of Americans say they want to have the choice of a public plan.2
These Republicans need a reality check. Every member of Congress should know that opposing health care reform isn’t just morally wrong—it’s politically dangerous and unpopular.
That’s why we’re planning some very tough new TV ads. They’ll let voters know exactly how much money their representatives have taken from the insurance industry, whose top goal this year is to kill the public option.
These ads are a surefire way to put Republicans on the defensive, and show that Americans want their representatives to stop siding with insurance companies by obstructing health care reform.
To hit our goal of $185,000 and get these ads on the air. Can you chip in $20 right now to help out?

lettersfromeurope–I have read that the famous London fogs of the past were connected to the high levels of coal ash in the air. The ash particulate matter attracted the water molecules and therefore made “great” fog. Now that coal is not used as much for heating and cooking, the fog has greatly decreased.
Regarding Grassley, as long as he runs…he will be elected.
The people of Iowa know who butters their bread, and it’s Grassley who is bringing home the bacon, so to speak.
They elect him because he brings in so much federal money to the farmers with farm subsidies, etc. that they can’t afford to place a newbie in his position.
I lived in Iowa for years and believe me, there are some very weathy farmers in Iowa. They are not about to give up their gold mine.
So, while Grassley rails against a “socialist” public option, he is scooping up as much cash as he can from the Feds to give to Iowa.
That’s what they should focus on when taking on Grassley. He is a huge hypocrite.
Here is my fav comment from that link….
And so begins the establishment coronation of the 2012 Republican marionette. Who is the lucky speech writer for her debut?
Huffpo has a story up which linked over to The Plum Line.
“The groups, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee and Democracy For America, pulled in $59,747 since their anti-Grassley ad went up yesterday, via their fundraising pitch on the Dem fundraising clearinghouse Act Blue.”
————————————
A copy of the Youtube clip is on the website for viewing as well. At least if people like Grassley are going to spout nonsense and lies like death panels some people are going to call him out on it. Could have done it weeks ago when he first spouted off, but I hope the ad plays a lot in his State and sticks in their mind at reelection.

Have a wonderful time samper. It will be interesting to hear what the locals take is on American politics. Do they think we’re crazy or do they feel better now that Obama is POTUS?
As for CLSA I think they know she’s a laughing stock. I also think that many in Asian want to see more investment directed into Asian investments as opposed to money flow toward USA investment.
Here’s the take from the Financial Times of London: http://ftalphaville.ft.com/blog/2009/09/01/69381/so-mrs-palin-tell-us-what-you-know-about-east-asian-finance/

I know I’m redundant, but this is truly the trip of a lifetime. I could die in a plane crash on the way HOME and feel I’d “done it all”, happily meeting God and telling him all about my (and Brian’s) adventure.
And, of course, knowing BF is doing the kitties right!
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO disappointed to have missed Ann last night! But in her last AB post, she sounded good. Good in a way that would be a struggle for me to achieve. She is one STRONG woman and even more so with her current challenges. What an inspiration!
My thoughts are with her as she continues her journey!

Ah, fog. It’s sometimes so thick we can’t see the building on the next block, let alone the island on the other side of the Channel. And there must have been a bunch this morning, as a cruise ship started blasting its fog horn at 5:20 coming up the Channel. The grass was also covered with fog dew, though it was clear when we walked to work. I love the fog (mostly because that meaning it’s not raining and there’s a chance it will clear to blue skies!)!
Got this video from Crooks & Liars. Sure made sense to me.

I was interested to read the BusinessInsider article linked to by #14, that the invite to Palin could be Borat-like theatre.
Yesterday I thought the same thing, something about the enthusiasm in the following quote just rang SARCASM to me:
“We just felt it would be a fabulous opportunity for CLSA clients to hear from Mrs. Palin,” Wheeler said, adding that CLSA approached Palin with the offer.
The use of FABULOUS sounds a little frivolous for an earnest business summit.
@London Bridges Oh dear, so foggy! I always wondered if the very foggy of the sixties in London had something to do with loads of pollution. Supposedly it has become much better since. I don´t know. I didn´t live in London long enough to be able to compare.
@nswfm Stealing signs. I guess the trying was the point and the fun. The way is the goal kinda thing. If that was funnier than reading signs in the fog, by climbing up the poll I´ll be under that virtual couch in my parents cellar in my PJ´s and won´t be able to come out for a few days, helpless from laughter.
yes, Gramian, it was great chatting with Ann last night!
Here’s a Levi snippet from ADN’s online front page this morning about the new Vanity Fair article exposing daily life with the Palins *Shudder*:
“‘Me and Sarah Palin,’ by Levi Johnston
That’s the teasing headline on the just-released cover of the October edition of Vanity Fair magazine, due on newsstands in Alaska on Sept. 8. The article isn’t online yet, but here’s a further tease from VanityFair.com: “For the first time, Levi Johnston opens up about life with the Palins, debunking Sarah’s image as hockey mom and moose hunter extraordinaire.”
Samper
Have a great trip! How exciting for you!!
Our dear friend, Ann S. is BACK! See the new post at Anonymous Bloggers. We had the chance to talk to her here at the Forum in chat last night. Our girl is as feisty as ever and she knows we have her back! Right, gang?
Burning Man has begun and since it’s on my bucket list, thought I’d share this blog.
http://blog.burningman.com/
As for Michelle Bachmann….
MEDIC !
I posted over there too, but everyone should go post a comment at that site to speak for how Palin “really” served Alaska. Her fans are posting a bunch of lies about how successful Palin was in running Alaska, and how Alaska is one of the few states to avoid the economic turndown—due to Palin’s savvy policies, etc. They are bragging about her successful pipeline project and her energy policies.
Speak the truth about what’s really happened in Alaska under Palin.
#25 ABS, very true! It would be a long hike.
I’m glad that visual made you laugh because the follow on story of the two of us trying to steal a street sign during the winter break to take back to college was even funnier. We were unsuccessful, but had a good time trying. No, we were not drunk or on drugs, either.

Great link. I posted a comment there to offset some of the other posters who are huffing and puffing angrily at the idea that Palin’s speaking gig was a joke to the CLSA. Jeeze! She’s a quitter ex-guv who was a two-term mayor of a town of about 6,000 before that. Where do these yahoos think she got her alleged vast acumen and experience??
Thanks Gramiam. I already emailed AKM about that comment. It doesn’t belong here.
OOPS! Sorry!
so awful amount the rest of them = so awful ABOUT the rest of them
Lou Dobbs has gotten whackier and whackier in the last couple of years! Reportedly, his wife is Hispanic – so why is he so awful amount the rest of them? He’s turning into another Beck. That rally is associated with the 912 group that Beck set up and Media Matters had an article that said Fox ordered Beck to NOT attend the rally that day.
Speaking of “holding their feet to the fire”, some Congressman (can’t remember who now) said that exact same thing about Tammy Duckworth! She’s the Iraq War veteran that lost BOTH of her legs, has overcome her disabilities and after much opposition from the Republicans, was finally confirmed for a position with the VA. Now tell me – was that guy an absolute A$$ or what???
I was wandering about Sarah’s “higher calling”…now I see that’s it’s to a higher tax bracket. What was all that gibberish about still working for Alaska? The woman only cares about herself, and her followers are too starstruck to notice. I swear, she has no soul.
How foggy was it? I had to drive with the car door open so I could see the double yellow line on the road.
More crazy. There is a link to write to CNN about Lou Dobbs latest connection to a group that has been designated as a “hate group”.
http://mediamatters.org/press/releases/200908280026
Today, Media Matters for America President Eric Burns issued an open letter to CNN President Jonathan Klein regarding prime-time anchor Lou Dobbs’ scheduled appearance on September 15 and 16 at the “Hold Their Feet to the Fire” legislative advocacy event and rally sponsored by the anti-immigration organization Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR). FAIR, an organization that has been designated a “hate group” by the Southern Poverty Law Center and that has been sharply criticized for its racially-tinged ads, was founded by John Tanton, who has a long history of making racist statements and espousing racist beliefs.
Speaking of the crazies – Michele Bachmann was at it again:
http://coloradoindependent.com/36840/bachmann-slit-our-wrists-be-blood-brothers%E2%80%99-to-beat-health-care-reform
>>>In a fiery speech that had her conservative Colorado audience cheering, U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann railed against the dangers of health care reform and other Democratic initiatives, warning the proposals “have the strength to destroy this country forever.”
“This cannot pass,” the Minnesota Republican told a crowd at a Denver gathering sponsored by the Independence Institute. “What we have to do today is make a covenant, to slit our wrists, be blood brothers on this thing. This will not pass. We will do whatever it takes to make sure this doesn’t pass.”<<<
They make my head hurt…..
@1 greatgranny2b: Regarding those comments from Palinbots…Wow!
That’s about all I can say except, they sure have some high expectations for “the choosen one”. It seems to me that they think that if she were President, she would be the ruler of the world. It appears that they are as educationally challenged as Palin.
I’m still shaking my head at this line………..
Not only that, she will defeat terrorism by wiping out Islam and convert the entire world to American good old fashioned Christianity. All other religions will be obsolete and irrelevant! “
@lynnrockets – I´ll have to remember to get a picture next time. Then we can compare soupiness levels. I´m glad I haven´t had to climb any poles…. (still giggling about that one)
I was just kidding. Remember, I live in New England and we have our share of the foggy dew, also too.
@lynnrockets – I have had that kind in Germany and Italy. My Mum experienced in London in the sixties – she´d got out of the car with a flashlight and lit the way for my Dad. Guess there were a lot less cars on the road in those days.
Italy that was in the Po Valley area. Very humid and this time we were coming back from a trip to the beach in fall and it just was there, like a wall. We inched our way home, again in a car.
Germany – Just happens sometimes. Might not last as long as the italian soup I´ve experienced, but still impressive. Fortunately not a car experience, but a walking experience.
@newsfm LOL – the visual. Guess he didn´t think it was funny at the time, but I am falling off my couch, in my parents cellar while in my PJ´s (only figuratevely of course).

Hey lynnrockets, it can get that foggy anywhere! My friend’s dad had to get out of the car and climb up the pole to be able to read the sign because he couldn’t tell where he was near their own home.
@ lettersfromeurope #21
Where do you live with that kind of fog, Transylvania?
I’d be willing to donate to a fund that would send Palin and Sanford to a deserted island never to be heard from again. It’s obvious they don’t put family first, in fact, their families would probably be better off without all of that negative bs.
I figure I am walking through clouds when walking through fog. It´s great, even if not very bouncy. (the really thick kind/hardly see my hand kind)

The AARP and Seniors: Clashing Views on Health Reform
At least 60,000 AARP members quit the organization between July 1 and mid-August specifically because of its pro-reform stance, and the organization’s online message boards are littered with anti-reform posts. (AARP is quick to point out that during the same period, it signed up 400,000 new members.)

I remember a short plane trip I took with my 2 small children. The airport experience was horrible but there were few passangers.
Back then Care Bears were popular. My kids were talking about Care Bears and looking out the windows. The people on that flight were so wonderful. They would call out I see one over here and we’d go over to that side, then someone in the back would say over here!
The trip was 40 min flight and those wonderful people helped the stretch the imagination of my children. I think they enjoyed it too!
I smile when I see big white puffy clouds to this day!
This looks like a really good read. “The Death of Conservatism”

>>Well, as Krugman notes in the above referenced op-ed: “Part of the answer is that the right-wing fringe, which has always been around — as an article by the historian Rick Perlstein puts it, ‘crazy is a pre-existing condition’ — has now, in effect, taken over one of our two major parties. Moderate Republicans, the sort of people with whom one might have been able to negotiate a health care deal, have either been driven out of the party or intimidated into silence.”
<<
Sanford is a jerk. He should have resigned instead of embarrassing himself and his family with that press conference. What dad sets such an example to his four sons, for crying out loud?!
I’ve wanted to go to Argentina, too, but he might have ruined it for me.

No endless waves of grain, eh?
@#8 – There’s an update to that article – Maguire resigned, citing family reasons. Now………if only Sanford would resign.
Hi Samper – Have a fantastic time! My cousin married her own Greek Adonis umpteen kazillion years ago and he’s still as handsome as back all those years ago when I was a teeny-bopper drooling over him. Their daughter also married over there and has a boutique in Athens – wish I could remember its name and I’d get you a discount.
Maybe by the time you return, some of those folks will have wised up to Palin and she’ll have gone into permanent retirement……….wishful thinking, eh?
Good Morning Pups!
Great Granny: All I can say is, “BARF”. Not on YOUR commentary, of course! But, those comments are just too strange for words and the possibility of SP being president is sickening.
Busy morning for me, but nothing but relaxing for the afternoon. I leave for Greece in 24 hours and couldn’t be more thrilled.
Honestly: Who is SICK TO DEATH of hearing about this? I don’t blame you and I’m sorry!
I just couldn’t be more excited to see “where it all began”, meaning our democracy.
Also too: They JUST uncovered another prestigious burial ground! It never ends in Greece with excavations of fascinating things! Even building the Metro (Subway), they would find a piece of pottery or something and out went the bulldozers and in came the toothbrushes to make sure everything was appropriately cared for.
It’s amazing they get anything done around there!
BTW: I’ve arranged for Brenda to have a week of beauty at the spa (not short changing her, she’s even getting a few MASSAGES!), a nanny for the twins, and a homekeeper to tidy things up on the homefront for her.
Brenda and the twins are going to EQUALLY enjoy the week!

It is hard to imagine just how rabid some of her followers are. For someone to proclaim to be a Christian, yet the attitudes and statements certainly aren’t what I think of as Christian-like. I only looked at her Facebook page one time and that was more than enough for me. They remind me of the Jim Jones culties – never question anything, just blindly follow. SICK!

I’ve just been back onto the Asia Sentinel site to read comments regarding Palin’s speaking to them: http://asiasentinel.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2030&Itemid=32
I just have to share these two comments that were posted. This is the first one and he certainly adores her and gives her a great amount of credit for damaging the health care debate:
“written by John Skookum , September 01, 2009
Well done CLSA. The wheels are coming off the Obama wagon, and the American people are in the mood for a representative of the common man and woman who is not afraid to slaughter some sacred cows in Washington. There is a decent prospect of Mrs. Palin becoming the next President. She did a fine job in Alaska, better than most of the men who preceded her. She is perhaps better prepared than any other state governor to discuss energy issues, and can point to a record of real accomplishment in energy policy in Alaska.
Millions of people are happy and proud to have voted for her, other millions now wish they had, and she continues to command the rapt attention, or perhaps I should say spittle-flecked obsession, of millions more people who claim to hate her.
Almost by herself, she has changed the terms of the health care debate, and put President Obama and his huge Congressional majorities to rout. Love her or hate her, she is a woman of magnetic charisma and immense public interest who has fought her way to the highest level of politics from the most modest family background. I would be delighted to hear what she has to say. ”
This second one will probably not go over very well in Hong Kong, or any Islamic country. I don’t think they’ll appreciate hearing that she will abolish Communism, wipe out Islam and every other religion. I doubt everyone wants to be part of Palin’s religious movement. This is typical of the arrogance that we experienced under Bush/Cheney, with them thinking they had to force our ways and values on every other country. I think this statement is downright dangerous.
