Vitamin Democracy: APOC wants YOU!

The Alaska Public Offices Commission (APOC) is in the process of updating the regulations covering the three areas within its purview: Campaign disclosure, Regulation of lobbying, and Legislative and Public Official financial disclosure.  Usually, this process is done by making the changes public on the APOC website and then through a series of formal meetings where they take public testimony. It can be a very intimidating process generally only used by those subject to the regulations (public officials, aides, candidates and campaign workers) as well as geeky, watchdog types (ahem). Here’s the good news! APOC listened to the requests of many…

Open Thread – Ankh if You Love Isis

Thanks to Mudflatter G_Katz for sending in these great pictures of a vehicle (at least we think it’s a vehicle under all those stickers) spotted in a local shopping mall. Do you have bumperstickers? Share your slogans in the comments. The only sticker on my car, is the classic No Pebble Mine sticker that can be seen on Alaska cars and trucks whose owners run the political spectrum.

Voices from the Flats – I Me Mine: The Unholy Trinity Of Ayn Rand

By Don Millard (@OTOOLEFAN) “Run for your life from any man who tells you that money is evil. That sentence is the leper’s bell of an approaching looter.” – Ayn Rand Ayn Rand was out of her Vulcan mind. This is a simple fact that can be verified by anyone with even minimal Google skills. She was the Albert Schweitzer of Selfishness and the Mother Theresa of Greed all rolled into one. This, naturally, makes her a hero to the Right and qualifies her for sainthood. Too bad she was an Atheist. Her philosophy, so she said, was one of…

Open Thread – Brian in Peru

Thanks to Mudflatter WP, Brian had a fabulous trip to Peru! Here is a picture of him at the Incan archeological site of Raqchi, where the temple of Wiracicha is found.

New GOP House Majority Tries to Redefine "Rape" and "Incest"

Well, that didn’t take long. The new House GOP majority has stepped out with a bold new plan for the American people, specifically women. The limits on federal funding for abortion except for the cases of rape and incest, are now under assault by definition. For years, federal laws restricting the use of government funds to pay for abortions have included exemptions for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest. (Another exemption covers pregnancies that could endanger the life of the woman.) But the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act,” a bill with 173 mostly Republican co-sponsors that House Speaker John Boehner…

Open Thread – Red Sky

I know this isn’t the first sunrise picture I’ve posted recently, and fair warning – it won’t be the last. It’s hard, when it’s been dark for so long, not to be excited to sit over morning coffee and watch the show. It’s free entertainment at its best with a free shot of Vitamin D. The sun popped its head up at 9:30am and set at 4:57pm, giving us 7 hours and 27 glorious minutes of light – a gain of 5 minutes and 6 seconds from the day before. Not bad.

Oyster Roundup! What the Shuck?

~Thick and fast they came at last, and more, and more, and more! What the Shuck? Forgive me for that WTS? moment… I couldn’t resist. Before we get out the oyster knife and cocktail sauce, here’s a question for you all. What’s more to your liking, a roundup post, or several shorter posts during the day on the topics I’d normally cover like this? That’s not to say that the oyster roundup would disappear, but might be less frequent. Leave your thoughts in the comments. They Want What They Pay For Apparently paying Bristol Palin thousands of dollars in student-raised…

Open Thread – Moore Up North

Tune in Saturday at 4pm, and Sunday at 9am to KYES Channel 5 for Moore Up North!  The show films Thursday nights at 5:15 at the Taproot Cafe on Spenard Road. The photo shows this week’s panel beginning (ironically on the far left) with Tom Brennan, Jill Burke from the Alaska Dispatch, and (also ironically on the far right) Scott Turner-Scofield. There was lively debate and great conversation. Shannyn also interviewed the indomitable Jeff Mittman from the Alaska ACLU. Don’t miss it! Jeff Mittman is the Executive Director of the ACLU in Alaska which just celebrated 40 years in The…

Sarah Palin's "WTF Moment."

I’ve been regularly blogging about Sarah Palin since before she got the VP nod. And it takes a lot for me to be flabbergasted by anything she says. At this point, I kind of feel like I’ve pretty much seen it all. I have a big callous on my brain where all the Palin information is stored.  But once again, I’m proven wrong in my assumption that she’s bottomed out; that she has become more of a caricature of herself than Tina Fey could ever be; that whatever tentative grip with reality and mental stability that she may have one…
