Winter Break Films – Five for Five

Note from Zach – Long ago, before I started writing for The Mudflats, I worked at a video called Emerald City Video. Outside of the normal drudgery of any retail job, it was pretty cool. The store had a better than Netflix back catalog and most of the employees had seen them all, for a film school dropout it was Heaven. One of my good friends Russ Burlingame is starting a podcast celebrating the store and the back catalogue – the films that you might only catch on TBS ‘edited for TV’ at 2am. Here’s a great list of films…

Mudflix: Rhymes for Young Ghouls

“This is what brings my people together… the art of forgetfulness” It’s been a month now since I first was able to watch Rhymes for Young Ghouls, and I still think about it. It’s the sort of film that gives you chills on a regular basis long after viewing. It’s a horror film, but not the kind with traditional ghouls and goblins (even though there are a few). The monsters in this film are not apparitions, they are very real and based on very true stories. We follow a young Red Crow girl surviving on the Red Crow Mi’g Maq reservation in 1976….

Open Thread: Alaska Girls

A friend sent me this intriguing movie poster the other day. Which of course meant that I had to find out about this movie, it looks fantastic. Unfortunately after spending far too long investigating I came up with no such film. There was a film called “Dragstrip Girls” staring Fay Spain who IMDB describes as “your typical B-movie drive-in bad girl – sometimes blonde, sometimes brunette, always bodacious.” After doing a reverse image search I found the awesome movie poster below, which someone photoshopped. Also, the fantastic sounding trailer… which I think we need to do a remake of.

The Frozen Ground – Interview with Director Scott Walker

The Frozen Ground is now available on DVD, on-demand, and on iTunes. We here at The Mudflats can’t recommend it enough – it’s dark, well-acted and written, and features John Cusack in one of his best and most terrifying roles ever. Shannyn Moore interviewed the director a while back in a must-listen-to interview. The director, Scott Walker (no, not that Scott Walker), explains how he extensively researched this Alaskan true-crime story, and fought to film it in Alaska. Trailer for The Frozen Ground
