Road Trips, Protests and Kiev – 2014 In Photos
2014 was an insane year. I haven’t experienced anything like it in my lifetime.
Sure, everyone says that’s every year when writing these end of the year summary type articles. But just for a moment stay with my on this. We had the rekindling of the Cold War in Ukraine, riots in the streets of a middle American city, Civil Rights protests in every major city in America, a border crisis (however made-up) and a mid-term election that effectively ended Obama’s chances of doing anything before the end of his Presidency.
Somehow I ended up being at all those events. Here’s some photos from those stories with links to the coverage, some for The Mudflats and some for other websites.
In January I made the brash and stupid decision to move from Alaska back to Upstate NY for school… adding to the stupidity I decided to drive back.
Once back in Upstate I decided it was best to rush off to Ukraine as there was shooting, burning and a revolution going on. [Link]
Soon after returning from Kiev I ended up rolling my Subaru.
Onward to New York City as I was out a car and certainly couldn’t work in Upstate New York without one.
In May I received by first print photo spread in the Village Voice – it was part of a story on the Occupy Wall Street protestor who was abused at the hands of the NYPD, Cecily McMillan. [link]
After that came the summer of protests, before of course it became the winter of protests.
First was Guantanamo.
Then was the #BringBackOurGirls.
Then came Gaza and Israel.
Oh yeah there was also the insanity that was an outdoor ‘Electric Daisy Carnival’ in New Jersey.
But that drug fueled craziness was only topped by the ‘Border Crisis’ – I spent a day in the 100 degree sun overlooking the Rio Grande. Also met some cool kids.
And then there was that time when a couple hundred thousand were in NYC for the Climate March. From there I spent a couple of months on an investigation into vote theft.
This was followed of course by the 2014 election.
Then came more protests. Ferguson, and then…
…finally New York.
Here’s hoping that 2015 will be a calmer and less insane year. I mean… one can hope, right?
Thank you Zach. I have enjoyed your perspective and your writing style. Keep up the great work.
Your next road trip, might I suggest taking your secret troll snipe hunting in Kansas? For his own good,of course.
Heh, spent most of my “free time” editing and planning the next project.
But appreciate and thank you for doing all that you do. WOW!!!!!!!
How did you spend your free time last year,Zach? The drive from Alaska to New York is more out of state travelling than I have done in 62 years,by far.Either you need to stay home more or I need to get out more.
