Farewell to Alaska’s First First Lady

Neva Egan, Alaska’s very first First Lady, died Wednesday night in Juneau at the age of 96. Wife of Governor Bill Egan, she came to Alaska to settle in Valdez as a teacher in 1937. She is survived by her son Dennis Egan (D), State Senator from Juneau and his family.

Who Shills for Shell on the Chukchi Sea Shore?

Alaska Democratic Sen. Mark Begich today said oil and gas exploration in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas off his state’s coastline should proceed. Begich said he will reintroduce bills next week that will fund studies about how to respond to a spill in “broken ice conditions” and buy cool stuff like ice breakers. He had praise for the Oil Spill Commission’s recent declaration that the need for additional research in the Arctic doesn’t justify a “de facto moratorium” on Arctic development.

No worries says Shell. They could totally clean up like 90% of whatever spills. Really. Scientists say 10% if you’re lucky, and that doesn’t count an icy environment. But what do they know? And as for more research? Begich says that should happen too, “on a parallel track with exploration.”

For those of you making your own “you should have listened” flow chart, this means. The Gulf did not learn from Prince William Sound, and now the Arctic Ocean will not learn from the Gulf which did not learn from the Sound. If your flow chart looks like a giant cluster… you got it right.

Happy Anniversary to the ACLU

A limited number of tickets will be available at the door tonight at 6pm. The event will honor a host of worthy Civil Libertarians:

90 Days of Groundhog Day

Here we go again. It’s not Bill Murray waking up day after day to “I Got You, Babe” but it’s equally frustrating. Oil, that is – black gold, Prudhoe Tea. And it’s back in the spotlight for yet another legislative session. Rep. Les Gara of Anchorage expounds. And if you don’t subscribe to his newsletter, click the link in the title. It’s always a good read.

A debate about oil company taxes is likely to dominate the legislative session. Again. Like it did in 2006. And in 2007. And last year. Currently the state has over $12 billion in savings, much of which was made possible with the oil tax reform law we passed in 2007. You might remember that when we changed the tax system in 2007, oil companies opposed the move, in part saying tax changes create “instability.” Well, this time they, I guess, want the instability and are pushing for major changes.

Tweeleted.

We know that Sarah Palin’s ability to string together a series of literate sentences is the zoological equivalent of two hamsters fighting in a brown paper bag. But her latest tweet begs some investigation. Here’s the back story which many of you may have heard by now. The National Enquirer came out with a story that Todd was engaged in a little extramarital recreation with a certain “massage therapist” in Anchorage. If you must, you can read about it HERE. But that’s not the interesting part. I’m far more fascinated by what happened in the dark of night after the story was released. We here in southcentral Alaska assumed the air raid posture, crouching under desks, arms helplessly draped over skulls, waiting for the shock waves eminating from Wasilla. What was the ex-half-gov going to say regarding the indiscretion?

And then (perhaps) came the cryptic answer via Twitter… a photograph. A lone photo of a group of people riding snowmachines with the file name 6pgo was posted at about 10:30pm. “So what,” you say? Well, one of the snowmachines is riderless. Mere happenstance, or perhaps… some powerful and chilling allegory for the ex-first-dude. OK, I am probably giving way too much credit. But, if it’s true, then I think she needs to give up all the “word” stuff, and concentrate on her true calling – visual metaphor and conceptual photography.

And to make our mystery a little stranger, the picture disappeared off Palin’s Twitter feed some time between midnight and 2am. It was, as they say in the Twitterverse “Tweeleted.” #shrug

Appears Ms Quittypants may have stopped mothering halfway through her life. Sarah may have stopped the wifely duties during the marriage. Ms Tripp was just a ghost wife for Todd.

  2. bubbles says:

nah Pat. she’ll be flapping her lips next month at an interview/screechy kind of ‘do’ on Lawngisland.

supposed to be about a thousand dimwitted business people, idiotic academics and brain dead riff raff who are going to eat delicious food and drink delightful drinks and i am just jealous ’cause i am not invited so i can insult Sarah whilst i sip and supp. dang. here are pics of the place.

As a former Long Islander, I hang my head in shame.

On the other hand, I DID move away from there 13 years ago! 😉

  3. Well, whatever is going on with SP, maybe she’ll finally stay around her family long enough to be a mother and a wife. There must be some job she can do in Wasilla that doesn’t require the rest of us to see or hear her.

  4. seattlefan says:

Lol! Your take on Sarah’s latest “issue” is hilarious and uniquely put. Love the way you write.

    The money quote:

“But, if it’s true, then I think she needs to give up all the “word” stuff, and concentrate on her true calling – visual metaphor and conceptual photography.” ……….

    So funny!
Perhaps her next book will be a nice coffee table picture book complete with crosshair maps, cryptic photos and no captions.

    • Tanaga12 says:

a coffee table picture book…. good one seattlefan. Very funny.

So isn’t it also very strange that this “massage therapist”’s last name is Tripp?

    • Bretta says:

      “…and no captions.”

Becky Mansour would have conniptions if she wasn’t allowed to rev up the guv-mouth. I’m ROTFL in anticipation.

  5. Millie says:

I think it wonderful we are no longer hearing the ‘voice’ of sister Sarah!!! The media isn’t even talking about her silence. Yea!

A tiny baby gives us all a ray of hope http://www.jsonline.com/news/milwaukee/114430769.html

    • What a beautiful child. Our first daughter was 6 weeks early, weighing in at 5# 2 oz- which is huge compared to this little one. But premature babies can have such a struggle – she almost didn’t make it, twice. I still think of our daughter as a miracle baby. And then I remind myself that our second daughter was full term with no problems and realize that she too is a miracle.

      • No offense intended, but, when you think of how unconscious Palin and her supporters act,its a “miracle” they are still breathing, functional human beings.

    • vyccan says:

Oh boy, does this story ever bring back memories!!! I had the male equivalent 18 years ago @ 26+ weeks and 875 grams (never bothered to find out what that was in pounds and ounces because that was the least of my concerns). He was the smallest baby I have EVER held. Prior to his arrival I never felt I had an affinity for children under two. [I really do believe God has a sense of humour :).] My son spent exactly three months in the neonatal ward, hooked up to oxygen and intubated for a large part of that time. I practically lived there, especially during and after surgery to close his PDA valve because it wouldn’t close on its own. Apart from the fact that I never had preclampsia – just went into premature labour – the stories are almost identical. I am extremely happy to add that my miracle from God just finished high school with an 87% average and is in his first year of college. God, along with the nurses and doctors, did an awesome job and I give thanks daily!

We all should know that the Alaskan senators are all about their state and it’s people. What would one expect. If Alaska doesn’t keep it’s oil profits from the taxes it charges it’s oil companies it won’t have the money it has to keep running. How can the state take from someone(an oil company) and give to others sharing the wealth. If ya look at all the senators I don’t think I can find even one that does not do what the people of their states wants versus the good of the whole USA. Not a one.

  8. auni says:

Today the college kid who hacked into Miss Sarah’s email account reported for his year long stay at a minimum security facility. By God, none of this forgive and forget stuff from our Sarah. What should be the charge for putting a bullseye on the AZ district where Gabby was shot, and the others killed? If I would have done that, I couldn’t live with myself–thinking that I might have caused some deaths. I don’t care what anyone says–that kind of behavior gets people killed.

  9. ks sunflower says:

I am so disappointed in Senator Begich. What is he thinking? Has bought into the Big Lie or has he been simply bought? Goodness, I thought he was a man who believed in science. What gives?

I am accustomed to having callous idiots for Senators here in Kansas. It’s been that way for a few years and looks to continue that way for a few more, but I had great hopes for Begich being different.

  10. boodog says:

Nothing from the ex-half-governor on the passing of the first first lady? Shame.

You KNOW who came up with “tweelete” is right? I love that you used it!

It’s coming in much more handy than I ever thought it would!! Thanks, Mrs. Palin. I’ll be famous in no time! (tick tock)

  12. jimzmum says:

I wonder what it was like for Mrs. Egan teaching in 1937. I hope there is some oral history of her experiences.

I had to go and find a map to find the Chuckchi seas. Dang.

As to the oil companies, I was born and raised in Kentucky. The only way I can get to my family cemetery, dating from the 1780’s, is to call a coal company and ask that a guard meet us at the gate. 249 acres are “reclaimed”, and one acre is history.

Thank you, ACLU for all you do! Even though you make me crazy. Honestly and commitment are your prime wonderments, and I thank you for each – when you aren’t making me crazy.

Oil company taxes? I am considering sticking my head in the sand. Sheesh.

That woman: screw her. (sorry about the language).

Good news! Our elder grandgirlie and her team from her elementary school won their town’s math team challenge. They are to compete for the district title next week. She is nine and working on Calculus. Shoo, I could not spell Calculus at age nine.

  13. beth says:

I followed the Tweet-link to the photo shortly after the Tweet was Tweeted. [I check her Tweets on occasion via the intertubes -kssunflower, I believe it was, provided the link a while back.]

I thought the photo rather odd, but the title of the photo, its caption, struck me as even odder. Extremely odd, even. Never dreaming the photo/link would be removed from $Ps canon of great literary thought, I didn’t think to commit the title to memory. It was something like “Odd man out” or “Missing Shoe” or “Man Down”… dang! I wish I could remember what it was! Did anyone else see it and remember what it was? beth.

    • It looks like there is a person in the background and they are all looking at him. But who is the person in the far right of the photo? Did he get off the snow machine to, perhaps, take a photo? It does look like they are all looking at the person behind them, though.

Odd picture, yes. But everything to do with the quitter queen is odd.
