Open Thread – Occupy from Bellingham to the Bering Sea!

Hooray for the hale and hardy Occupiers in Unalaska who set out to occupy the Bering Sea!  We note with a smile the awesome yellow boots on the ground.

And this great shot came from Mudflatter Tele, an Alaskan out of state, currently occupying  Bellingham, Washington.

Definitely take a minute to check out her awesome blog Hooked, about her life as a “tree hugging, yoga posing, vegetarian feminist in Alaska’s commercial fisheries.”  It’s a treat!  You can read it HERE.

We’ll have more great shots from Occupy Fairbanks and Occupy Anchorage tomorrow!

We get our water from Lake Rathbun. We voted to keep our C’ville waterworks, but they shut it down anyway. Don’t know how much fuel we are drinking.

    • mike from iowa says:

jet fuel could possibly keep your metabolism up(to near the speed of sound or higher). I could lose weight in a hurry that way. Maybe pollution IS a good thing

  2. Lacy Lady says:

We have no sales tax on food here in Iowa. Also, no tax on meds. However, we pay a lot of tax on real estate, . Also a sewer tax on our water bill. Probably can find more tax on our bills, but anymore, I just send a check.

    • mike from iowa says:

LL-us Iowayans should be proud to pay for hog slop in our water supplies. I believe we are still numero uno in hog production and have some of the most impaired waterways because of it. Someone should bottle some river water from the Little Sioux River near me and see if it will strip paint off machinery. Could be onto something here.

I haven’t looked at the 999 thingy but the “fair tax” is bad on so many levels…
get rid of IRS and make states and store owners the tax collectorsfor the fed ?
Does the 999 deal shift the cost of tax collection to businesses like the “fair” tax?
We already spend an inordinate amount of time collecting tax and keeping records of it all for the Borough. Same for anywhere which collects state tax. With this idea ,don’t we just pass the cost of collection onto somewhere else… like in hidden private costs which supposedly Rs despise? hmmm

    • BeeJay says:

Yah, like 18.13% sales tax is going to fly very far here in AZ, NOT! It is a sure fire way to kill the retail sector in America. By no stretch of the imagination would this lead to more money in my pocket. Didn’t anyone tell Herm that a sales tax is a regressive tax and hurts low-income folks far more than the high-income types?

But then, he doesn’t have to worry about it, does he? Maroon.

  3. OldOwl says:

Sounds like Mr. Cain’s 9-9-9 would cause the economy to come to a screeching halt. People would quit buying everything but essentials. He thinks “They’ll spend more if they have more cash in their paycheck.” Wrong. Especially like you guys said, for the lower income people… they *won’t* spend more because they ain’t got it to spend. We have an extremely wealthy guy here in Missouri who is trying to change state law to abolish state income taxes and switch to a sales tax scheme like Cain’s. We’re fighting him tooth and nail. The state will lose billions if this goes through. And ppl like me who live a few miles from a neighboring state will just go over there when it’s time to buy stuff. Watch.

Sorry for the typing errors. I am having to type blindfolded. I cannot get my cursor in the typing space. HELP!!!!!!!!

  5. Lacy Lady says:

    Can anyone explain Cain’s 9 99 99 plan?
I am thinking it would add 9% to our tax when makin a purchase. This would be added to our State tax, which in Iowa is 7%. Am I wrong?

    • benlomond2 says:

nope! You got it right ! and IF I’ve got his info figured out correctly… tax deductions would go by the wayside; home mortgage, education credits, dependent credits, etc.. you buy a new car.. 9%fed sales tax, you buy a new house..9% fed sales tax…I don’t know if existing special taxes would go away.. tobacco and liquor “sin” taxes, hwy improvement taxes, there’s just WAY too many items that would or would not be affected by this simplistic approach,,,,but then, he’s appealing to the simple minded people who only think in slogans and catch phrases..

    • mike from iowa says:

someone on Yahoo yesterday said that used pizza would be taxed-gross. I believe Cain wants korporate tax at 9% instead of the 35% they can’t get korporations to pay now. Too many loopholes allow for off-shore accounts to allow patriotic korporations to forego their patriotic tax paying duties.

    • CO almost native says:

If you’re still on this post, you are correct: the 9% tax would replace federal and payroll taxes, but the 9% sales would be added to anything “new”, including food and prescriptions. Cain says the middle class and poor would save, because it would not be added to anything “used”, like a car. Anyone who understands basic math can see corporations and very rich come off like bandits under this plan.

And we would still pay state and local taxes…

      • beth says:

“Cain says the middle class and poor would save, because it would not be added to anything “used”, like a car….”

Because, as we all know, middle class and poor people just loves ’emselves the toss-off/discards of the wealhy!

Ain’t nuthin’ they likes better than to Not have ‘new’; used is good enough for them, by golly! Gaaack! ‘sides, they really don’t know how to appreciate and take care of ‘new’ like Cain does… What a adzjack! beth.

I gotta warn you that mike from iowa has never owned a new vehicle in his 58.75 years(going on 80something). My newest vehicle was a 97 Chevy pick-up my ex-FIL left me and I sold it pronto because it had a clutch. I buy quality used vehicles about once every nine years from private parties. And I drive them till they die. I guess I’ll never be rank and file rethiglican.

  7. mike from iowa says:

According to Ryan J Foley of AP-Herman Cain has ties to AFP and the billionatre Koch bros. that goes back a number of years. A bunch of Cain’s campaign staff come directly from AFP,have recently worked for AFP or are members in good standing.Cain’s 9-9-9 plan was conjured up by a former AFP official(supposedly) which would help explain the taxcuts for the wealthy first and foremost.

    • benlomond2 says:

..just read the same on yahoo news… WHY am I not surprised ?? when I see what the Republican platform is, I tend to think ANY minority individual in their upper echelons is a Quisling…

  8. Tele says:

Thanks so much for the shout-out, Mudflats! My hat (bandanna) is off to the Unalaskans and everyone else making quieter, more solitary stands in places that require far more courage and conviction than urban settings like Bellingham – joining the party here doesn’t require guts at all.

On the other hand, this lone Brigham Young student in Idaho is one of my heroes of the week:

Tele – best wishes from a ‘Hamster born and bred! I’m a long ways from there now, and miss it so, especially this time of year.

Good luck to us all, and may we win this one!

      • Tele says:

Thanks, BeeJay! Enjoying an unusually pleasant mid-Oct here… Nice since summer was so brief in Southeast AK this year.

    I do love these pictures.

I watched the NYC Times Square events last night, live on the city cams. I was very afraid for the people. However, if they just remain peaceful, refuse to be instigated, and continue with the message, then all will continue to blossom. I told some friends that I might take a day trip to the city…. you know, just to risk arrest, I guess. The looks I get are not encouraging ;o) I shall not be dissuaded, however, if I feel so inclined.

    Bubbles, start gathering bail money.

Another remote location began its protest on Saturday: Occupy Kauai had about 150 to 200 people line the street in the “commercial district”. LOL, the island is so small, nothing really is a financial or commercial center, so we made do with a mall. And that little road you see is our biggest highway.
