Oyster Roundup – Lights, Fights, & That’s-Not-Rights
A half-dozen news bites from the week.
Overheard Juicy Bits:
A certain Alaska Republican Party Chairman and a certain Republican pollster were overheard at a certain eating establishment by a certain Mudflatter this week. Apparently, the former thinks Charisse Millet is “a twit” and candidate Bob Roses is a “yes man” who will do whatever he’s told. That’s what we need more of in Juneau – twits and sheep. Please feel free to vote for Patti Higgins and Bill Wielechowski.
Convicted Militiaman Will Appeal:
Coleman Barney, one of the three men found guilty in the summer’s Fairbanks militia trial will appeal. Schaeffer Cox and Lonnie Vernon were found guilty of conspiracy to murder federal officials, but the jury was unable to reach a verdict for Barney. He was sentenced to five years in prison on weapons charges to include 18 months already served.
Paperwork for the appeal was filed with the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on September 26.
Dancing Lights Wow Anchorage
Anchorage was treated to a spectacular display of northern lights last night starting around 11:00pm. The sky was ablaze from one end to the other with swirls, and shimmering dancing ribbons of green light. Facebook lit up too as we all enjoyed the moment on our shared virtual porch. The benefit of living less than a mile as the crow flies from an awesome northern lights photographer. I remember this one very specifically and can thoroughly enjoy it again, even though all I did was stand around and gawk. Thanks to almost neighbor Chuck Berray for capturing this great moment.
From Minnie Mouse to Skinny Mouse?
Apparently the fashion world thinks Minnie Mouse needs to drop a few pounds. And get taller. A holiday campaign at Barney’s New York has a little something for the kids – Disney goes runway. I’m not sure exactly where you’d find this in the statutes, but I’m pretty sure what they’ve done to Minnie Mouse is against the law, and I’m absolutely sure that someone needs to go to jail. Or apologize. Minnie has been squeezed, and stretched into a pencil thin runway model. “When we got to the moment when all Disney characters walk on the runway, there was a discussion,” Freedman recalled. “The standard Minnie Mouse will not look so good in a Lanvin dress.” Um. Dear Barney’s, Minnie Mouse is not SUPPOSED to wear a Linvin dress, and she looks perfect just as she is – two feet tall with size 63 shoes.
Governor Sean Parnell is in rare form these days. You thought Sarah Palin was the only governor to stomp her little feet and break crayons when she didn’t get her way? Well, Mudflatters, the student has surpassed the master. Parnell is going on a pout-a-palooza tour campaigning against Democrats who opposed his brilliant scheme to give the oil companies $2 billion a year for the next 5 years with no strings attached. This time, he’s named names at a fundraiser for candidates who’ll do what they’re told, and called out Senators Bill Wielechowski, Hollis French, and Joe Paskvan. I’d pay good money to see any of those three take on Parnell in an oil tax debate. Our quote of the week goes to the mighty Joe Paskvan in Fairbanks who told the Associated Press:
“Just because Parnell says something “doesn’t mean it’s true.”
And speaking of corporate tools…
“Don’t allow some corporate tool another chance to give it all away…”
And now, to take us out, here’s Alaska House Representative Bob Miller from Fairbanks. Gotta love a candidate with the moxie to do his own music video.
Too bad Palin’s not around AK Govt. She can’t stand yes men.

These three former Iowa Supreme Court Justices-including former Chief Justice -explain the Varnum decision that lead to same-sex marriage in Iowa. rwnj went ballistic and voted not to retain these three justices and have their sights set on another next month. Very good, fairly short read.
http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/2012/10/us-navy-allies-find-less-than-half-the-sea-mines-planted-in-key-exercise.html US Navt demonstrates how to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. Finding less than half the sought after targets is not an indication of problems. No-according to one Navy spokesman a better indicator of success is the fact that every platform sent to find a shape, found a shape. Maybe it is just me,but if thirty plus nations working in unison can’t find half their targets, maybe it would be prudent not to use,I don’t know, submersible mines. The argument that they have and use them so we have and use them probably works for “nukular” weapons as well.
Here’s to the Northern Lights and to Patti Higgins and Bill Wielechowski.
And to the Mudflatter with exceptional hearing.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/15/pastor-steve-youngblood-slap_n_1968224.html Funny that we just had a post about this recently. Keep church out of state matters or send the pastors to prison.
Upon further reflection, that aurora picture liiks like two whooping cranes, one with no head showing to the left and slightly behind a shorter one with a head and torso and no legs showing. All in the eye of the beholder. Magnificent, regardless.
http://www.cnn.com/2012/10/12/world/meast/baghdad-postcard/index.html?iid=article_sidebar Iraq’s oil exports are way up-you remember Iraq’s oil,the people’s oil? Well some well positioned people in Iraq are getting extremely wealthy, while Joe Citizen still only gets 12 hours of electricity a day.Corruption, assassinations, deaths, bombings are a part of everyday Iraqi life. Tell me what did we win there?
LOVE the campaign song. 🙂
Arlen Specter-moderate rethug turned Dem from Pennsylvania has passed away.

I found this while perusing the Colorado Springs Gazette. On a side note, the chairperson of central Mississippi Tea Baggers laid claim that women should not be allowed to vote because they are too emotional and vindictive. She would probably know.

Vindictive and diabloical-I stand corrected.
Instead of re-correcting me,just read the damned thing.
Ha ha, not only did I read the damned thing, but I’ve been sharing it in multiple places! Thanks for the link!!! Priceless!
🙂
Phyllis Schafly she ain’t but that is probably good.
Sorta fits in Ms Millett’s “twit” category though…
Well, bless her heart.
If she thinks women shouldn’t vote,
then Please and By All Means, darlin’, don’t vote! Seriously.
and talk about body image issues!
I am no great fan of the Mouse, but anybody involved in that desecration of Minnie Mouse should be ashamed of themselves. That’s not hip, not cool. That’s just sick. What has become of childhood and the age of innocence?
Sex sells everything; that’s what happened. Here’s Joni Mitchell’s powerful statement:

Take heart, mudpeeps. Littlebird lives and works in the “vindictive-and-diabolical” one’s neck of the woods. Littlebird and many of her friends volunteer for Obama, are active in their communities, and are registered and committed to vote.
Mississippi is so much more than just the stereotype of bigotry and ignorance and grinding poverty and the KKK. Like everywhere, there’s at least a kernel of truth/history to the stereotype, but everywhere are folks who are smart and hard-working and brave and strong and kind and generous. All that trumps fear and hate and ignorance, eventually. I don’t live in fear of the future for my daughter and generations to come. They are rising to the challenge, confronting and wrestling with real issues and problems. They fill my world and my dreams with hope.

Pssst — hey, Barney’s New York … you may want to take a closer look at Minnie before you put a couture creation on her and send her slinking on down the runway.
It’s about her (ummm, how do I put this as delicately as possible) … well, it’s about her, (arrrgh! how to put it without hurting her feelings?) … oh, to heck with it: It’s about her honkin’ big schnozzola! There, I said it. Minnie’s nose is a fashion Disaster!
Methinks Tyra Banks would Never! approve. beth.
Yon aurora looks birdlike, purple and green with a long neck. The “BOSS” is campaigning for the Democratic candidate for Willard’s entitled office. Can Parnell be enrolled in a dog obedience class or some such? For a supposed christian he sure gripes alot. Be thankful,Sean, that mike from iowa doesn’t show up and pull your ears for you. If my kids or Grands griped like Parnell does, they would be sent to the woodshed before being sent to bed without supper. What a spoiled, little brat he appears to be. Send me a boatload of absentee ballots and let’s get this election rocking!
Fine campaign song. Skinny Minnie looks (you’ll pardon the expression) goofy. I love our temperate weather, but envy you your auroras.
He doesn’t care about his approval rating as long as he can get enough twits and yes men elected. Then his bosses at conoco phillips and bp will be pleased and give him his deferred compensation bonus when his term expires.
So the more Parnell whines about his tax plan, the more he pisses off Alaskans.
What is his approval rating?
Dittman said 61% earlier this year in one of their questionable polls.
I think it is 47 now. 47 people , not 47%
Heh heh… Good one. That may apply to many GOPers, not just ones in Alaska.
