He Was a Crook: Nixon Resigned 40 Years Ago

Nixon-620x813

Nixon announced his resignation 40 years ago today and signed this document the next day. It’s sad that the current political scene in DC makes me miss him, but still, even though he would deny it… he was a crook. One just needs to listen to his own words on the White House tapes to prove that. From bombing illegally in Cambodia to Watergate, he was a political monster to the core.

With all that said he’s one of the reasons I went into journalism. I keep this document on my computers hard drive to remind myself why I do what I do – this is the power that journalism can have.

Here’s Nixon’s own words:

Hunter Thompson in his essential obituary of Nixon wrote:

Richard Nixon is gone now, and I am poorer for it. He was the real thing — a political monster straight out of Grendel and a very dangerous enemy. He could shake your hand and stab you in the back at the same time. He lied to his friends and betrayed the trust of his family. Not even Gerald Ford, the unhappy ex-president who pardoned Nixon and kept him out of prison, was immune to the evil fallout. Ford, who believes strongly in Heaven and Hell, has told more than one of his celebrity golf partners that “I know I will go to hell, because I pardoned Richard Nixon.”

Or in Nixon’s own words from his 1962 press conference after his defeat in the California Governors race:

“I leave you gentleman now and you will write it. You will interpret it. That’s your right. But as I leave you I want you to know — just think how much you’re going to be missing. You won’t have Nixon to kick around any more, because, gentlemen, this is my last press conference.”

Zach- I’m glad folks are still looking back at the mess which was mr Nixon. We didn’t learn much though…
We had to do the St Ronnie thingie and oh, so many other doof stunts in the years since.
I’m growing old and am many years disillusioned…
And then doofs have to say crap like the shaneholt stoopidity above and I get a bit more steam to keep at it.

South Dakota blog has a Shane Holt called Steve Sibson. If you aren’t a Sibby ideal christian)of which only one exists) you are apostate. god his/herownself doesn’t measure up to Sibby’s standards. He is a royal pain and will argue anything with anyone as soon as he can make it about religion. If you disagree you are a neo-marxist,socialist commie apostate. Sure is fun poking this one with a fork. 🙂 And not unlike Palin and Shane holt,Sibby messes up a picnic worsen red ants.

I was really torn when Ford pardoned Nixon; on one hand , I could feel the relief that the whole sordid mess was going to have some sort of closure for the nation, and we could pick up the pieces and begin to move on, rather than go thru a trial and all its hoopla Yet there was dismay that a man who had become President and had misused the nation’s trust to do what was right, would suffer no serious consequences for his actions; and in hindsight, the issuing of the pardon has set a precedent for following Presidents that THEY would not be held personably accountable for their actions while in office; just resign and have the VP grant a pardon… Tricky Dick is still screwing us over from the grave….

      R U getting any rain?

      • benlomond2 says:

Nope!! Dry as a whistle here… occasional brush fires popping up occasionally , but CDF and local vol FD’s all over them…water restrictions in effect…. guess I’ll be putting in a new lawn this winter IF the rains do show up… El Nino is suppose to be a bust this year… Harvesting plums today, Jam making this evening… 🙂 If it’s yellow, let it mellow, If it’s brown, flush it down.. is the new mantra … 🙂

Thanks for the bodily function update. I was confused about color schemes. Move to iowa,we always seem to have rain at the most opportunistic times plus all the natural fertilizer you could ever want. What’s a two or three time zone commute back to California to visit the family? You’ll get used to some bitter cold weather and drought seldom lasts for too long.

Thanks Mikey!…. but I’ll stay put.. I drove thru the Mid-west a long time ago from Tenn to Cal changing duty stations.. It kind all looked to same to me,… and kept saying to myself, “I don’t think I’m in Kansas any more” … those twisters aren’t real good for tourism, and they show up a lot more frequent than earthquakes!

Fondest memory of Nixon was Shane Holt on his knees in front of “all the President’s men.” No,that wasn’t it. Fondest memory was written on a bathroom wall in the Hiway 3 and 71 truck stop,20 miles east of my hometown of Cherokee iowa.. It said “don’t change dicks in the middle of a screw, vote for Nixon in 72.” And he gave us 18 year olds the right to drink low point beer in bars.

Since sunlight is supposed to be the best disinfectant, wouldn’t hurt to exhume Nixon and Raygun and clean them up a little. Impeach both for posterity and throw in Ford and a couple of dumbass dubya’s,too. Justice delayed is justice denied.
