“One Anchorage” Takes the Case for LGBT Rights to the People

Last week, an organization called Equality Works launched the One Anchorage Campaign for a ballot initiative to be voted on by Anchorage residents in the Spring 2012 Municipal Election. The initiative would add sexual orientation and transgender identity to the Municipality’s Equal Rights Code. Per the Press Release from Equality Works: One Anchorage Files Initiative Application for Legal Protections The One Anchorage campaign filed an application this morning with the Anchorage Municipal Clerk’s Office to place an initiative on the April 2012 ballot asking voters to include lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Alaskans in the same legal protections already…

Open Thread – Brian!

One never knows when Brian the moose will wander in to the yard, and subsequently in to the open thread. This morning, there was I, minding my business and deep in thought, enjoying my morning coffee on the deck, when what should catch my ear but the distinct “Mwwwph” of a bull moose. Sure enough, there was Brian looking ever so handsome, sporting a giant rack of still-fuzzy antlers, and enjoying a leisurely breakfast of rose bushes and fireweed. He didn’t seem to mind my company and I snapped lots of pictures. Every once in a while the gentle clacking…

My Spiritual Experience at an Anchorage Assembly Meeting (video fixed)

(Shay Kelly and Shane Patrick of Project 50/50) By Linda Kellen Biegel When I left for the Anchorage Assembly Meeting Tuesday night, there were certain things I already knew to expect: — Mayor Sullivan wanted the ordinance that (among other things) banned sitting/reclining on the sidewalk pulled from the agenda and sent back to a committee to be “fixed” (Translation: Mayor Sullivan was getting pounded in the press and in public opinion and just wanted it to stop) — Debbie Ossiander and/or the Mayor made it clear to the media that public testimony on the Ordinance would still be open…

Open Thread – Good word

If you like words (and who doesn’t), you might be interested in the site wordsmith.org and its Word of the Day feature. Today’s word was “porcine” – a great word in and unto itself, but extra great when taken in context with its sample usage! PORCINE: MEANING: adjective: 1. Of or related to swine. 2. Piggish: greedy; sloppy; boorish. ETYMOLOGY: From Latin porcus (hog, pig). Ultimately from the Indo-European root porko- (a young pig) that is also the source of farrow, aardvark, porcelain, pork, porcupine, and porpoise. Earliest documented use: before 1425. USAGE: “The lipstick on this pig was thick…

Wisconsin Total Recall: Democrats 6. Republicans 0.

Democrats made a clean sweep against the fake democrats fielded by the Republican Party of Wisconsin in order to force primaries and grant the republican incumbents an extra month to campaign…and grant them the  opportunity to receive plenty of money via independent expenditures from the likes of Americans for Prosperity and other corporate-backed special interests. Despite GOTV efforts by local republican parties, the GOP failed.  Is Governor Walker  paying attention while lounging on his taxpayer-funded patio quaffing cloyingly insipid Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy, a beer/lemonade mix from Wisconsin’s number one faux craft brewery. Gotta love a Wisconsin Governor who actively attempts…
