Bear Zombie-cam!

A trip to the world-famous Brooks Camp from the Lower 48 will set you back thousands. Even from Alaska, you’ve got to be lucky enough to win the bear lottery, and it still isn’t cheap. It’s almost 300 miles from Anchorage, and no roads lead there. Try to get there before 2014 at this point. You’ll be lucky if you do. Almost anyone who likes bears will recognize the area. If you’ve seen a picture of a grizzly standing in the river grabbing a salmon in mid-air as it tries to leap up the falls, it was almost certainly taken…

The Comeuppance of a Gopher Choker – Corey Rossi Busted for Illegal Bear Hunting

Corey Rossi, director of the Alaska Division of Wildlife Conservation, who has just resigned in scandal after being snared (as it were) engaging in the illegal hunting of bears. Mudflatters may remember past coverage of Corey Rossi, referred to by others as “the gopher choker.” Rossi began his ignominious political career by being friends with Chuck and Sally Heath, parents of then-Governor Sarah Palin. Palin high school pal and former real estate agent Franci Havermeister was given the…

Fedex – When Your Grizzlies Absolutely, Positively Have to be There Overnight

In October, three cubs were orphaned after their mother had what was described as an “encounter with a Wasilla resident.” They have been relocated to Detroit, Michigan via Fedex plane.  The trio arrived in the wee hours of Friday morning. “We’re just very excited because the cubs seem to be in good health and they’re very busy exploring their new environment,” said Ron Kagan, Detroit Zoological Society Executive Director. The three young lads – Mike, Thor and Boo – are almost a year old, not old enough to have survived the Alaska winter without mom. Thanks to the efforts of…

Oyster Roundup!

~Thick and fast they came at last, and more, and more, and more! Derby Day! That’s right. Today with your plate of tasty oyster news nuggets, you can also enjoy a mint julep. (pause while that sinks in) OK, maybe not the best combination, but you understand my metaphorical drift. It should be an interesting race today. There are 19 horses in this year’s race, and there’s a great summary in the Wall Street Journal (linked above) for those of you looking for a quick primer. It’s been a long, strange trail to the 137th Kentucky Derby, which gets underway…
