Corrupt Bastards 2.0 Has Launch Date
Good news for Alaskans that have been jonesing for their Corrupt Bastard fix. It’s been a while. The trials of the self-named Corrupt Bastards Club were the best pieces of legislative and judicial theater around, and had Alaskans who normally didn’t pay attention to politics riveted, and infuriated. They may not have been keeping up with the ins and outs of Alaska oil and gas taxation and policy, but at the very least they expected their legislators not to blatantly sell their votes right to the oil companies. Silly Alaskans. Not only did we discover that our legislators sold out,…
Alaska Grown vs Made In China
The past two budgets have included $84 million for a bridge…to somewhere in Alaska. Senators Wielechowski and French have written a letter to the Alaska Railroad with some concerns. ANCHORAGE- Today, Senators Bill Wielechowski and Hollis French are calling on Alaska Railroad officials to ensure steel products made only in America are used to build a bridge over the Tanana River near Salcha. The Senators say numerous constituents have recently contacted them, concerned that the Alaska Railroad Corporation is considering using foreign steel on the massive project. “Alaskan funds should be used for Alaskan and American jobs and goods,” said Senator Wielechowski,…
Palin’s Remarks After Iowa Premiere (Transcript of Word Salad)
Time to get the giant Caesar-sized bowl and the double Costco bag of Crazy Croutons. Sarah Palin delivered a monstrous serving of word salad after the Iowa premiere of “The Undefeated.” It appears that the potential presidential candidate was unconcerned with having prepared remarks of any kind, and simply let all those buzz words out of her head, in no particular order. The full transcript of the video is below. My favorite part is when she explains that we don’t need foreign countries because God gave us the oil and the gas and the coal and we can be totally…
Open Thread – Brian and the Beast
It seems that Zach Roberts (Mudflats NY Bureau Chief and honorary adopted Alaskan) has been going through his old pictures, and came across this gem I’d forgotten about. He titled it “Brian and the Beast.” It’s Brian the Moose at the 9/11 rally in Wasilla last year. He couldn’t resist punking the ex-half-gov. And I have no idea who is holding Brian and assisting him in his naughty little caper… so don’t even bother asking. Who would do such a thing?
How the Alaska House Gave Away State Sovereignty to the Federal Government
By Rep. Les Gara I’m not a big fan of failure, and not a big fan of spending money on wasted Special Sessions. I’ve now voted three times, including yesterday, to pass the Coastal Zone Management bill that passed the Bi-Partisan Senate Monday, but surprisingly failed by three votes in the House yesterday. Failure to pass the bill gave away a big piece of state sovereignty to the federal government. Click HERE for a link to my speech on the House Floor on why I believed the bill should have passed, or read the text at the end of this…
Stop the Sunset at the Anchorage Assembly Meeting Tonight
He’s at it again. Mayor Dan Sullivan has found a new way to stifle the voices of Anchorage residents, and keep them from making all those pesky suggestions and complaints – you know, “citizen participation.” Apathy and disconnection is far more appealing to the current administration. But, tomorrow, there is a public hearing in which you, dear Anchorage resident, may make your voice heard anyway. The mayor has decided to trim the fat, and cut, or sunset many of the city’s volunteer boards and commissions. The city admits that this has nothing to do with saving money. So why put…
Open Thread – Spotted Outside City Hall
This little gem was snapped outside City Hall last Friday by Mudflatter “Woman of Mystery.” I wonder what party is getting planned? Feel free to write your own caption, or chat about the issues of the day.
Open Thread – Fuchsias (LKB)
I have tons of work to do in my garden, but fortunately, my hanging plants are absolutely gorgeous this year. Here’s my 2-tone pink/lavender fuchsia combined with blue, lavender and white lobelia, and… Here’s the one with pink/lavender flowers with just blue lobelia. I’m hoping to have more garden pictures for you this week…if I actually get some work done in between doctor’s appointments.
Oyster Roundup! Whales, FROGs, and Alligator Shirts.
~Thick and fast they came at last, and more, and more, and more! Here’s a plate of slurpable stories to start your week. Source links are in the title. Start shucking! Pay Up, Joe An Alaska judge on Friday ordered that failed U.S. Senate candidate Joe Miller pay more than $17,300 in legal costs incurred by the state in fighting Miller’s challenge to last year’s election. Don’t even get me started. OK, I’ll start. First the disclaimer – I didn’t vote for Joe, would never vote for him, am ideologically opposed to his political philosophy, and have written extensively…
