Gov. Sean Parnell Inherits Flaming Pants from Palin & Denies Children Health Care

Governor Sean Parnell, who has framed himself as an advocate for women and children, last week vetoed a bipartisan bill passed by the Alaska Legislature that would have provided health care for 1300 Alaskan children and prenatal care to more than 200 pregnant Alaskan women. These, most vulnerable Alaskans are those that fall between 175% and 200% of the federally recognized poverty level. Those that fall below that level are already covered by the state program, called Denali KidCare. What made the governor decide to veto the bill? He just discovered, he said, that some of the money allocated would…

An Open Letter from Rural Alaska to the Parnell Administration

~~CC Strongheart happily plays in a late summer puddle in the Village of Ugashik, while her mother Ann seeks answers about her future from the State of Alaska.~~   Dear Governor Parnell, Mr. Moller, Ms. Jollie, Mr. Black and others; After reading the article in the Dispatch I am gravely concerned and worried even more so than before about what this winter will bring to rural Alaska . Not only is the lack of both subsistence and commercial fishing, greatly diminishing our ability to put away fish for the winter but also the lack of funds brought in from commercial…

Politicizing the Anchorage School District

Now that the Town Hall meetings in Anchorage are over, and Senator Mark Begich has left the state for Washington D.C., what’s a poor bored wingnut to do? Well, after drumming their fingers for 24 hours, waiting for new marching orders, they’re off and running again. Trying to get everyone health care is bad enough, but behold the latest ‘moral outrage’ that President Obama is inflicting on the poor innocent children according to the conservatives.  On Tuesday, September 8th, that man is going to be on the TeeVee, in schools across the nation telling the children that education is important…

Netroots – Turning Red Districts Blue: Organizing for Change

One of my favorite panels at Netroots Nation was the panel discussion entitled Turning Red Districts Blue: Organizing for Change. Panelists were David Atkins (moderator), Darcy Burner, Adam Lambert, Democracy for America’s Arshad Hasan, Matt Browner Hamlin, and Eden James. Matt Browner Hamlin spoke about his time as Mark Begich’s online communications director in the 2008 campaign. MBH:  The challenge in Alaska is how do you get from a population which is only 23% Democratic to a vote of 50% +1. It was a big hurdle. Most Alaskans are registered as Non-Partisan. What helped the Begich campaign was the…

Palin’s Approval Index in Alaska Goes Negative (Updated with Charts!)

The latest Palin poll numbers are out.  Oh, it looks like those halcyon days of the 89% approval ratings are a thing of the past.  Now we can say that more Alaskans disapprove of the ex-almost-one-term-governor than approve of her. And the Approval Index (Very Positive minus Very Negative)w  -1.2 Question 1 Would you say you feel positive or negative about Sarah Palin? And is that very (positive or negative) or somewhat (positive or negative)? Very positive 120/400 30.0% Somewhat positive 67/400 16.8% Total positive (very+somewhat) 187/400 46.8% Somewhat negative 65/400 16.2% Very negative 125/400 31.2% Total negative (very+somewhat) 190/400…

Pebble Mine, Dirty Gold, and the Corporate War on Alaska’s Salmon.

[This article is cross-posted at The Huffington Post] A lawsuit was filed today claiming that all Pebble Mine’s state permits violate the Alaska constitution.  Skulduggery surrounding Pebble Mine?  Imagine that. On the receiving end of these legal accusations is the State Department of Natural Resources.  The suit was filed today on behalf of eight communities in the Bristol Bay area by plaintiffs including Vic Fischer, one of the drafters of the Alaska Constitution, and Bella Hammond widow of the revered Governor Jay Hammond who had previously said “I think Jay would first and foremost think of protecting that area, mainly the fish and…

Our last report from Fairbanks comes from Mudflatter Rubber Room Hotel, a regular commenter.  She passed on some great pictures and impressions from the event.  It’s interesting that each person brings some new insight and perspective.  Much gratitude to all the boots on the ground in Fairbanks for sharing the day with us.  Now that ex-governor Palin is on the loose in the Lower 48, I’m hoping that all you Mudflatters out there who get the chance for a close encounter will send me your photos and or write-ups!   *************************************** It was a somewhat pleasant crowd all happy people….

The Palin Rally Mentality – Thoughts from Fairbanks

Today I continue today to bring you reports from Mudflatters across the state – those who were at the Abdication Ceremony, and those that celebrated Palin’s stepping down in other ways. I look forward to writing about other things, but today we continue to purge our systems. Here are some thoughts on the Palin “rally mentality” from Mudflatter K in Fairbanks.   ********************************* I’ve been at Fairbanks political events before, and patriotic galas at this same park on the 4th of July, etc., and I’ve even encountered Ms. Palin at the Tanana Valley Fair back when she was running for…
