Bob Poe Steps Out of Alaska Governor’s Race
Today gubernatorial candidate Bob Poe announced he is stepping out of the race for Governor of Alaska. “Although running for Governor of this great state the last 17 months has been one of the most gratifying and enriching experiences of my life, I believe it is time for me to step out of the race.” Poe added, “In today’s economy I am unable to raise the funds necessary to gain the broad statewide name recognition required to win the race for Governor. Since I came into this race as a new name for many Alaskans the hurtle is simply higher…
Voices from the Flats – Donald Craig Mitchell
The following is an op-ed by Donald Craig Mitchell, an attorney and historian who lives in Anchorage. He is the author of Sold American: The Story of Alaska Natives and Their Land and Take My Land Take My Life: The Story of Congress’s Historic Settlement of Alaska Native Land Claims, which in 2006 the Alaska Historical Society named as two of the most important books that have been written about Alaska. *********************************** CAPTAIN ZERO VERSUS COMMISSIONER OF ADMINISTRATION Donald Craig Mitchell With the world watching, two months ago in Fairbanks in front of a crowd of cheering fans and jeering…
Another Hat in the Ring for Alaska Governor
It’s finally official. Today, Democrat Ethan Berkowitz has tossed his hat in the ring to run for Governor of Alaska in 2010 by submitting his letter of intent with the Alaska Public Offices Commission. Berkowitz was unsuccessful in his attempt to knock Alaska’s lone congressman Don Young off his perch in 2008, although polls showed him with a solid lead going in to the election. Berkowitz leads in name recognition among Alaskans, and has now entered a gubernatorial field including Democratic Senator Hollis French, and Democrat Bob Poe. “A lot has changed in the fifty years since statehood and yet…
Pop, Ooze, Dung, and the Alaska Personnel Board.
Lots of good stuff floating around the internets. Here’s a little smorgasbord of tasty treats you may have missed. POP! Gubernatorial candidate Bob Poe wrote an excellent compass piece for the Anchorage Daily News that begins like this: I support equal rights for all people. And I support banning discrimination in Anchorage due solely to someone’s sexual orientation. I support a comprehensive equal rights ordinance because it’s the right thing to do, period. Sh. sh. shhh. Listen. Do you hear those faint little noises, like Pop Rocks? Remember all those people in red shirts who testified at the Anchorage Assembly…
The Poe-Mobile Hits the Road
I had an opportunity a few days ago to stop in at an event at the residence of Bob and Terzah Poe. Bob Poe is the only Democrat so far to officially throw his hat in the ring to run for governor in 2010. After having an “If not me, who? If not now, when?” moment, he decided to declare his candidacy. At the time, the Daily News column The Ear, said that it probably wasn’t a good idea to run for governor if the first question people asked was, “Who’s Bob Poe?” He took the point, and has spent…
Bob Poe Uses the “N” Word! (….no not THAT one)
Add another voice to the growing number of Alaskans who have just had it up to their eyeballs with the governor’s rejection of stimulus money designated for energy efficiency. Beyond the slap-in-the-face obvious fact that this is Alaska, and might just be a good idea to promote energy efficiency, you’d have to have your head in a bag to not “get” that this has nothing to do with Alaska, nothing to do with our economy, and everything to do with a certain governor’s dreams of grandeur, and higher political aspirations. And all that can be bundled up in one handy…
Who is Bob Poe?
Dennis Zaki just got back from Kodiak, where he met Bob Poe. He asked him the question, “Who is Bob Poe?” and got this answer. Dennis hopes to ask this question of all the gubernatorial candidates. **WARNING** Do not watch this video if you feel insecure about your resume. Who is Bob Poe? from Dennis Zaki on Vimeo.
Sarah Palin Out of Touch and Out of Town.
Alaskans are picking themselves up and dusting themselves off today after dodging the bullet that was the appointment of Wayne Anthony Ross for Alaska’s Attorney General. Relief is the word of the day. There were many factors leading to the demise of this nomination; the fact that he called gays “degenerates” in the Bar Newsletter, the condemnation by every major Native organization, the report of comments that can only be described as sexist and misogynistic at meetings and panel discussions, but the final nail in the coffin for several of those “nay” votes may have been the most awesome “gotcha” moment…
Unity for Eric Croft!
What better way to celebrate this evening than to hang out with a bunch of happy Democrats at an Eric Croft fundraiser! It was held at the home of Senator Mark Begich and his wife Deborah Bonito. Little Jacob Begich met us in the driveway, and told me he’d have to “wand me” for security purposes. And sure enough he did, with a little plastic “security device”. He was having a grand time as the security guy. Very cute. The event was absolutely packed. I don’t know how many were there total, but at times it was almost impossible to get…
