The Master Returns – Clinton at the DNC

Say what you will about Bill Clinton. Love him, or hate him – the man’s got game. The former President took center stage at the DNC, and while most speakers might have been thinking, “How on earth can I get up there and follow Elizabeth Warren,” Elizabeth Warren ended up thinking, “Wow. I got to be Bill Clinton’s warm-up act.” It was clear from the first moments, that Clinton hasn’t lost a step. It was like watching a whale set free in the ocean. He was in his element, and all pistons were firing. He stood on the podium, and…
Eastwood, Palin and the Long Goodbye

Tropical Storm Isaac put a damper on the first day of the Republican National Convention. But nothing hit Tampa by surprise quite as much as what happened on the last day. Tuesday, it was announced that a special mystery guest speaker would appear before Mitt Romney on the final night of the convention. The most famous of the small tribe of Hollywood Republicans, Clint Eastwood took the stage. Dirty Harry looked a little more like Crazy Uncle Harry as he stood on the podium. But he’s 82, after all, and it happens to the best of them. The difference is…
Dear Mr. President, “I believe,” is not good policy

An open letter to President Barack Obama: Dear Mr. President, As a woman who worked very hard to make sure your last opponents were not elected — walking door to door in the snow on your behalf, registering more than a thousand Alaskans to vote, exposing Palin in the national media, etc. — I feel obligated to write you about a few of my concerns. Your secretary of the interior, Ken Salazar, recently told reporters asking about Shell’s recent drilling permits and Alaska’s Arctic, “I believe there’s not going to be an oil spill.” Sir, he just wrote the headline for the first oil spill under…

~Thick and fast they came at last, and more, and more, and more! Google for Pebble? It doesn’t seem possible that a company which has always been known for its progressive leanings, and whose slogan was “don’t be evil” could be supporting a project like The Pebble Mine. The first hint should have been the Google logo plastered next to the Fox one at the GOP debate last week. Then, The Huffington Post broke the bad news in their article featured with the scarlet front page banner simply stating – Google Goes Red. The shift in political strategy comes as…

Alaskans Would Vote Obama Over Palin in 2012
Posted by Jeanne Devon on June 29, 2011 · 22 Comments
On the longest day of the year, in the Land of the Midnight Sun, Hays Research Group in Alaska came up with some interesting numbers. Seems that average Alaskans, if faced with the choice of voting for Barack Obama, or Sarah Palin in 2012, would come down decidedly NOT on the side of our ex-half-governor. That’s right. If “The Undefeated” ran, she wouldn’t be. Again. Here’s the breakdown: Obama Strong 34% Obama Not so strong 6% Undecided – Lean Obama 2% Palin Strong 25% Palin Not so strong 6% Undecided – Lean Palin 5% Other Candidate 7% Undecided / Don’t…

Voices from the Flats – Sarah Palin Slams Michelle Obama

Sarah Palin Slams Michelle Obama in Racially Charged Passage from New Book by Geoffrey Dunn In passages leaked from her forthcoming book America by Heart, Sarah Palin — the erstwhile quitter governor of Alaska, who now, by all indications, fancies herself as President of the United States — has taken another cheap shot at First Lady Michelle Obama. In a passage on perceptions of racial inequality in the United States, Palin slams President Barack Obama, who, she asserts, “seems to believe” that “America — at least America as it currently exists — is a fundamentally unjust and unequal country.” And…

Attention Congress: Honoring veterans goes beyond Veterans Day

My thoughts today turn to the special veterans in my life. This year, those thoughts are sadder with the passing in July of a special man, Vietnam Veteran, and dear friend Maurice Bailey. Mo served as leader of the Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA), Wasilla Chapter and was founder of the Veteran’s Aviation Outreach, whose primary focus was to help the forgotten vets across the state especially in Rural Alaska. Bailey was also awarded the Alaska Governor’s Veterans Advocacy Award in 2007. From Senator Mark Begich’s comments on Mo’s death: “Mo’s tireless efforts on behalf of rural veterans were instrumental…

You can’t turn a tiger into a kitten by stroking it. ~Franklin Delano Roosevelt I heard Thom Hartmann use this quote this morning on the radio. I like good quotes, and that’s a good quote. I’m all for “sitting down with the enemy” to talk about compromise, engage in diplomacy and look for our commonalities. Compromise can be a good way of getting things done. But at some point, after giving the tiger every opportunity to meet you in the middle, and knowing you’ve done everything you could, you’ve just got to sew your arm back on and change your…
A Year of Sarah Palin. What a Long, Strange Trip It’s Been.

[This article is cross-posted at The Huffington Post] What a difference a year makes. A year ago today, after being stunned by McCain’s VP pick, I had finished writing a piece called “What Is McCain Thinking? One Alaskan’s Perspective.” It’s hard to imagine a time when the country was asking “Sarah Who?” but it was only one short year ago. One of the selling features of Sarah Palin was her astronomically high approval ratings in the state of Alaska. After all, how could a governor have positives in the high 80s or low 90s and be anything less than an…

This is great! You all are in for a real treat. OK, I’ll wait while you grab your Jiffy-Pop. (time passes, we pop corn, and settle in) This is the funniest thing to happen since the “fugus” comment. Only this time, it’s an actual 5-minute YouTube video! The first time I saw it, I was on a computer without sound and I watched, riveted, just reading the text. I wasn’t getting a complete picture by any means, but by the time the thing was done I was howling with laughter and I couldn’t wait to hear it so I…
