Donations Needed, Everywhere
In a season dedicated to gratitude for what we have, please let’s not forget to share our abundance with those who have less. In Anchorage, Bean’s Café, a local non-profit dedicated to helping the hungry and homeless, is in need of donations of food items for Thanksgiving meals. This year the organization will offer two dinners; The Children’s Lunchbox will sponsor a Community Fall Feast on Thursday, November 21 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at Clark Middle School, 150 Bragaw Street; and Bean’s Café will serve a traditional Thanksgiving meal on Thursday, November 28 beginning at Noon at the Café, located at 1101…
10 Reasons I Love Alaska Winters
It has been a long, snow-less autumn. As a landscape photographer, I hate the shoulder seasons. After the snow melts in the spring but before things get green, it’s an ugly, brown, muddy mess. The departing winter has revealed six months-worth of trash lying around. It’s not a pretty time. The same goes for the transition from autumn to winter. Once the leaves drop, it’s just a bunch of dead brown lying around. Well, here in Anchorage, the leaves dropped over a month ago. We’ve had a record-setting warm October, and finally the temperatures are starting to drop. Now, as…
Open Thread: Palin For President
Just found this in my Alaska photo archives, I don’t remember what the story – but I want a sticker for my car. Just think, she’d be just about wrapping up her term in a couple of months. Palin’s book comes out today… so who’s picking it up?
The Real Nazis
This Veterans Day, I am reprinting a piece I wrote for The Huffington Post back in 2009. Thank you to all the men and women who have answered their country’s call to service in whatever capacity they were asked. ****************** On my 21st birthday, I woke up in the morning and drove to Dairy Queen. I got soft serve vanilla ice cream with strawberry topping and I ate it for breakfast. Why? When I was a child I asked once if I could have ice cream for breakfast, and my mother said, “You can have ice cream for breakfast when you’re…
Shannyn’s what’s UP (video)
One of our editors, Fridays in the Mud host, and all-around Alaskan homegirl Shannyn Moore was one of the panelists on MSNBC’s Up With Steve Kornacki this morning. She and the panel discussed the secessionist movement springing up in places like Colorado, “sovereign citizens,” and other wingnuttery. Clips below—enjoy!
Fracking Victim Steve Lipsky’s Flaming Water is No Joke – by Julie Dermansky for Desmosblog
Fracking Victim Steve Lipsky’s Flaming Water is No Joke (via Desmogblog) Weatherford, Texas, homeowner Steve Lipsky has nothing to hide. He is not trying to take down Range Resources, a large oil and gas company with a reputation for bullying its critics, nor is he trying to defame the company as it has accused him of…
Recall Effort Advances
Anchorage State House Representative Lindsey Holmes got one step closer to political oblivion yesterday. She’s the Democrat, elected to serve West Anchorage, one of the most liberal districts in the state, who got to Juneau and went “>>POOF!<< Guess what? I’m a Republican now!” Those who knocked doors, donated money, put up yard signs, and gave their vote to Ms. Holmes were (needless to say) not amused. A group of the unamused decided to do something about it, and fire the nouveau Republican from her job. And that takes a lot of work. Signature gathering of District 19 residents began…
