EPA Should Stand its Ground and Protect the World’s Greatest Salmon Runs
Whenever I give presentations outside of Alaska, I always ask the audience, “How many of you like salmon?” Most hands in the room go up. Then I ask, “How many of you have heard of Copper River Reds?” Many of the hands still remain up. But when I ask, “How many of you have heard of Bristol Bay salmon?” almost all hands go down. And then I tell them the odds are 2:1 that they have eaten some. Nearly half of the commercially-caught Sockeye salmon in the world comes from the Bristol Bay region. The science explaining why Bristol Bay is the…
Step One: Show Up in November
In the recent Alaska primary election, there was a 15 percent turnout — a record low. Alaskans feel their voices aren’t heard. Many have lost hope. It’s easy to see why. We have a Senate President who works for ConocoPhillips and who, along with his other oil company buddies in the Legislature is refusing to fix our oil tax structure that has us paying out $700 million more in oil-tax credits than we get in production taxes. Tell Them FRACK NO! – From the Cook Inletkeeper
This is from the Cook Inletkeeper – please click the link below and send a note to your legislators. Deadline is this MONDAY! Fracking fluids are used to enhance oil and gas recovery; they are injected under pressure in oil and gas reservoirs, and they blast apart spaces in the source rock to allow oil and gas to flow more easily. Fracking fluids can contain diesel fuel and other toxic chemicals, yet the precise constituents of fracking fluids are often concealed as “trade secrets.” In the Lower 48, the use of fracking fluids has been linked to drinking water and…
