Guest Blog Post from Wickersham’s Conscience (Updated)
This is for those of you who have yet to discover WC’s blog and his superb combination of legal wisdom, political humor, birdwatching knowledge and gorgeous Alaska pictures. I thought this was a great summary for the weekend of some Joe Miller articles this past week. I found his last comment the most interesting. (By the way, in the picture above, it’s not previously been mention but the other man besides Joe in that picture is right-wing Conservative Patriot member and the Tea Party’s personal radio talk-show host, Glen Biegel.) —————————————————————————- WC isn’t the only blogger who is . ….
Voices from the Flats – Club for Growth, Clubbing Alaska?
by Zachary Roberts The Club for Growth has endorsed Joe ‘the beard’ Miller. Who, or What is “The Club for Growth?” Personally, when I first heard about “The Club for Growth” years ago, I pictured a sunny country club where rich people went to grow their inner feelings – maybe gain respect for the little people. Maybe get a soul. Sadly, the truth is nothing so kumbaya. To put it bluntly, The Club for Growth is a corporate front group run by the former CEOs of some of the largest companies in the world. Preemptivekarma.com wrote this in 2006 “The…
Murkowski’s Write-In Campaign–What Are Her Chances?
The supporters have been rallied, the big announcement has been made and Senator Lisa Murkowski is off and running on her whirlwind write-in campaign! So what are her actual chances of winning? 1) There is the problem of her name. Lisa Murkowski…doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue or the pen. However, it looks like a write-in won’t be as stringent as was once thought. Just “Lisa” would not be enough according to outgoing Lt. Gov. Craig Campbell. However, voters would not need to spell Murkowski’s name correctly if “intent could be ascertained” according to Division of Elections Director Gail Fenumiai…even “Lisa…
Joe Miller: Alaska’s Craziest Catch — Help Get This On the Air!
Republican candidate for US Senate, Joe Miller, burned-up the airwaves before the primary saying that cutting-off federal funds to Alaska is his highest priority as Senator. Now, he’s trying to backtrack just a few short weeks later. We’re not going to let that happen. We at Mudflats are excited to see the first video spot come out of the Netroots for the 2010 election cycle. Blue America PAC and AmericansforAmericaPAC.com, two cutting edge Netroots political action committees, are launching a daily video campaign targeting GOP/Tea Party candidates every day from today through Election Day, November 2. We’re especially pleased that the first…
Open Thread: Look what I got at the reunion!
While Jeannie and Shannyn are whooping it up in Vegas…oh…and doing important work with the Progressive Netroots from around the USA **nods** I’ll share with you just a bit of my summer. Here’s the beautiful “colorwash” quilt we brought home from my in-laws’ 50th wedding anniversary celebration in Soldotna, made by my incredibly talented Mother-in-law! (She’s won many awards.) All 9 kids and their families showed up and each one got to take a quilt home. Some of the quilts had a special meaning to one of the kids, others (like my husband) allowed their spouse to pick the on he/she had…
Speed Hump Consultant? The jokes write themselves…
There is a rumor out there…that in neighborhoods across Anchorage, some who have problems with speeding traffic and have been unable to get “speed humps” (a “traffic calming” solution) have started to…errrr…improvise with things like traffic cones (see the picture above). The sad irony is that any unauthorized attempt to try and avoid a tragic accident will be removed by the Municipality. Thanks, Mayor Sullivan. Mudflats fans are aware of the excellent job Jeanne and Shannyn have been doing covering the Municipality of Anchorage “Speed Hump” debacle. A short wrap-up may help those of you not as familiar with the issue: –A little girl was hit by a car in…
Open Thread
Shiny new open thread! What’s on your mind? Netroots officially starts tomorrow morning! We’ve had fun meeting up with old friends. And we’ve decided that Las Vegas is a long long way from Alaska. And I don’t mean just geographically.
Saying Goodbye to a Fallen Warrior
I found out last Wednesday, while I was in Soldotna for a family reunion, that my good friend Maurice Bailey had passed away the previous day. While he had suffered from Leukemia for awhile now, it still seemed to catch us all by surprise. Mo was a Vietnam vet, a pilot, an aviation mechanic and a stalwart fixture in Alaska’s aviation community. He was also founder of the non-profit organization Veterans Aviation Outreach, whose goal is to find as many of Alaska’s estimated 80,000 veterans as he could and get them signed up for their US Veteran’s Benefits. He sometimes found vets who were in the throes of…
