Anchorage Assembly Meeting – Non-Discrimination Ordinance Testimony
You can stream the Assembly meeting live HERE. More public testimony will be taken on the non-discrimination ordinance. Chair Debbie Ossiander has stated that there are 250 people left to testify who signed up last week. 88 people were heard then. Each person has approximately 3 minutes to speak, but people were reminded that all must be heard before discussion among Assembly members can begin. My understanding is that testimony on the non-discrimination ordinance will begin at 7pm Alaska time (8pm Pacific/11pm Eastern) Feel free to live blog the event in the comments. I know many who enjoyed rereading your…

Open Thread – Spare Brain?
Many times in life I’ve wished for a spare brain when mine seems to get too full, and I feel like trading in for one with more memory. I was walking along the trail the other day, looked down and saw that thing. It was rather alarming at first. I’m sure it’s some kind of fungus, but it made me laugh because it looks like a tiny brain, just sitting there doing nothing on the trail. It’s about the size of a golf ball and a half.
Sarah Palin on the Today Show…If We Must.
Visit msnbc.com for Breaking News, World News, and News about the Economy Where to begin with the Sarah Palin interview on the Today Show with Matt Lauer… After a brief discussion of the gas line, the topic changed. Lauer: Can we talk about some of the other ways you’ve been in the news lately, and you know about this. There’s been this feud this week with Late Show Palin: (interrupting) If we must… Lauer: I know…. But there’s been a feud this week with David Letterman about some comment he made… They go on to discuss the issue. Then at…
Open Thread – Palin on Today Show
On the next stop in the “Look at Me!” tour, seems our governor will be making an appearance on the Today Show with Matt Lauer. Topics are reported to be the future of the GOP and the escalating family feud with David Letterman. In case you missed it, the response from Med Stapleton to Letterman’s 8 minute explanation, and admission that the jokes were tasteless, and renouncing completely that he would ever endorse underage sex of any kind, was this little gem: “The Palins have no intention of providing a ratings boost for David Letterman by appearing on his show….
Palin Matchmakes for a Gas Line
By Shannyn Moore Governor Sarah Palin is sleeping with the enemy of many Alaskans. Her trip to Houston, Texas to discuss a merged project with TransCanada and Exxon Mobil betrays Alaskans still reeling from last year’s devastating Supreme Court verdict. It flies in the face of anyone with a memory of 20 years let alone last June. Exxon promised to “make Alaskans whole” and they never did; just another broken promise piled on top of all the others. Last year, Palin’s AGIA (Alaska Gasline Inducement Act) passed into law, awarding TransCanada $500 million in state funds to build the 1,700…

Silence is Consent. (Updated)
It’s hard not to comment on today’s news. Killing in the name of pro-life. Last year I attended a candlelight vigil at the Anchorage Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in the memory of innocent people who were gunned down in their church at a Sunday morning children’s program. They died not because of who they were, but for what they believed. They were randomly targeted as symbols of liberalism in America. Adkisson, [the shooter] who had served in the military, said “that because he could not get to the leaders of the liberal movement he would then target those that had voted them…
Dialing for Democracy!
Since the demise of local progressive talk on KUDO, there’s been a big gaping hole in the airwaves. OK, that’s not possible in a physics kind of way, but metaphorically that’s exactly what it is. Yes, we have national feeds of Thom Hartmann, Randi Rhodes, Ed Schultz, and others, but it isn’t like Alaska is some boring political wasteland unworthy of local political commentary. There’s more going on in our underpopulated state than most states could dream of. And the only consistent voices are Dan Fagan, Bob & Mark, Rick Rydell, Eddie Burke and their ilk. There’s enough red there…
Open Thread – Likin’ the Lichen
There’s just something about lichen that’s so….lichable. This combination of lichens is not unusual around here, and can be found covering large rocks at higher elevations above tree line. Photographed up close, they transform into beautiful abstract images that are positively artistic. Enjoy the shiny new open thread!
