Open Thread – White Thanksgiving

Anyone in Anchorage who was dreaming of a white Thanksgiving got their wish today. There’s about a foot of fresh snow at my house.  It’s that great snowman-type snow that we get early in the season. Hope everyone enjoyed the day, and best of luck to you who will enter the Black Friday mayhem tomorrow!

Thanksgiving Flashback: Witnessing The Turkey Pardoning Debacle of 2008

by Linda Kellen Biegel So my rolls are rising on the stove, almost ready to pop in the oven. The apple-cranberry pies (think Dutch Apple with cranberries thrown in) are cooled and waiting to be packed up and the homemade cranberry sauce is chilling in the fridge. We’re going to Josh’s brother’s house for Thanksgiving and Josh’s parents made the trecherous drive in the rain and ice from the Kenai Peninsula. Thanksgiving dinner for 22–that’s small for a Biegel meal! When I saw an ad for the Triple-D Farm and Hatchery in Wasilla the other day, I had two thoughts:…

Open Thread – Jell-O

I know Sarah Palin dishes it up all the time, but tonight, this is what my brain feels like. I, and many others survived four hours of public testimony on the 2011 slash & burn Anchorage Municipal Budget, brought to you by Mayor Dan Sullivan. The final tally was: Pro-Mayor’s budget – 32 Anti-Mayor’s budget – 52 Crazy – 3 I forgot to wear my “I’ve been Sullied” button… Gotta remember that next time. But now I’m off to bed to reboot the ol’ grey matter.

APOC Staff tries to (mostly) give Rep. Bill Thomas Campaign a pass–My testimony for today's hearing

Teleconference number 1-800-315-6338, Code 4176#1 ********* Everyone may remember a few weeks back when I filed an APOC complaint against Rep. William Thomas, Jr. (R–Haines). I posted about the APOC Complaint I had filed against the re-election campaign of Representative Bill Thomas, Jr. Here is the complaint as listed on the APOC website. The complaint is in response to a newspaper advertising campaign consisting of 17 ads which ran in the Chilkat Valley News during the weeks leading up to the election: …Upon…

Murkowski & Palin – Rock 'em Sock 'em Republicans

Well, any bets about whose head is going to pop off their shoulders and bobble around on that little springy thing?  After years of back and forth, which started in denial, moved up to subtle comments, and then not-so-subtle jabs, and now no-holds-barred rock ’em sock ’em robot action… my money is on Sarah Palin.  To be the one with the head popping off. Back when Palin returned home with her tail tucked between her legs after the 2008 election, rumors ran wild that she’d go up against Murkowski in 2010 for the senate seat.  She decided not to, and…

Attention Congress: Honoring veterans goes beyond Veterans Day

My thoughts today turn to the special veterans in my life. This year, those thoughts are sadder with the passing in July of a special man, Vietnam Veteran, and dear friend Maurice Bailey. Mo served as leader of the Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA), Wasilla Chapter and was founder of the Veteran’s Aviation Outreach, whose primary focus was to help the forgotten vets across the state especially in Rural Alaska. Bailey was also awarded the Alaska Governor’s Veterans Advocacy Award in 2007. From Senator Mark Begich’s comments on Mo’s death: “Mo’s tireless efforts on behalf of rural veterans were instrumental…

Open Thread – Rick Steiner at APU Campus

Q&A and reception will follow. Stop by Grant Hall at the campus of Alaska Pacific University at 2:30pm on Sunday. It’s going to be a great presentation.
