Voices From The Flats: Nick Jans Deconstructs Sarah Palin’s Outdoor “Skills”
Last week we learned TLC would not extend Sarah Palin’s Alaska television show. Nick Jans, a writer who lives in Juneau, put perfectly why the news would come with a sigh of relief. He has given his permission to repost his article that ran in USAToday last week. Nick Jans’ latest book, The Glacier Wolf, is available at nickjans.com. WHAT PALIN’S SHOW SAYS ABOUT US: Sarah Palin’s Alaska, a TLC miniseries, has been quite a spectacle. We’ve watched Mama Grizzly mush a dog sled across a glacier; stalk caribou on the tundra; paddle raging white water; and match her frontierswoman…
More on the Shooting in Arizona **UPDATE**
— As most of you know, this morning, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona was shot in the head during a meeting with constituents at a grocery store. The gunman killed at least six people and injured (from what we know at present) at least 13 others with a nine millimeter handgun. These pictures are exclusive to Mudflats and depict the scene at Rep. Giffords’ office in Tucson several hours after the shooting at the Safeway. People began to gather at the office, using it as a place for shared mourning. (A big “thank you” to Jay and Kathy Cross for…
Palin’s “Reload” Hits “Target”: Updated
Sarah Palin’s call to arms, “Don’t Retreat, Reload” finally results in a tragic shooting of an Arizona Congresswoman. Three term Representative Gabrielle Giffords, representing Arizona’s 8th district and caught in Palin’s cross-hairs, was gunned down today and shot in the head. One of her aides was killed and at least 12 others injured. In March, Sarah Palin posted this ad on her facebook page and tweeted, “Commonsense Conservatives & lovers of America: “Don’t Retreat, Instead – RELOAD!” Pls see my Facebook page.” Arizona Senator John McCain defended Sarah Palin on NBC’s Today Show last March: McCain was asked about what…
Voices from the Flats – Retired Pastor
By Retired Pastor This retired pastor is not nearly brave enough to read Sarah Palin’s ghostwriter’s book, America by Heart. We all appreciate AK Muckraker’s noble sacrifice in plowing through the platitudes on our behalf, and commenting on whatever chunks of fertilizer the plow turns up. Here is one such chunk of manure which caught my attention. On page 195, the ghostwriter did a cut-and-paste from George Washington’s Farewell Address and then summarized the quote: morality itself cannot be sustained without the support of religious belief. Fair enough. Washington said that; the ghostwriter liked it; presumably Sarah Palin endorses the…
Broken Promises – YOU Can Help Tell the Story of the Yukon (VIDEO)
~Filmmaker Dennis Zaki & the Mudflats Moose at the top of the world – Barrow, Alaska. next to the famous whale bone arch. Mudflatters may remember our friend and filmmaker Dennis Zaki. We, and other progressive Alaskan blogs raised money to help send Dennis to the Yukon River village of Emmonak. Dennis flew to Emmonak to record a story. It was a story of how the Native people of the area were suffering a very difficult winter. Record cold temperatures froze the Yukon early, keeping scheduled shipments of fuel from reaching their destination. The resulting soaring prices in heating oil…
Open Thread – 12 Days of Palin (Day 12)
Well, this is it Mudflatters… the last day. Our virtual choir has stood in the Square, breath turning to clouds, noses red. It is five below zero tonight, and every twig is covered with impossibly thick frost, like some liberal Hollywood set designer went a little too crazy with the spray on snow. The blue LED lights are twinkling, and the conductor rasies his baton. As the choir huddles shoulder to shoulder, they prepare to sing the final verse. Mudpuppies from around the globe ring the scene, smiling and stomping their feet to keep warm. They are excited knowing that…
