Palin Rejects Stimulus Money. Throws Alaska Under the Bus to “Save Face.”
I can’t help noticing the irony of the front page of the Anchorage Daily News. It pretty much says it all, quite poetically. A) Over there on the left in the headlines section it says: Palin Cuts $80 Million from Budget – Gov. Palin announced today that she is vetoeing $80 million from the state budget, including federal stimulus dollars meant to go for energy relief. B) And then right next to it under an aerial photo of the remote village of Selawik, it says: In the winter, Village Police Officer Clarence Snyder doesn’t use jail cells. They don’t have…
Rural Update – Hope Truck Heads for Eagle!
Here is a great way for Alaskans on the road system to give a hand in a time of need. The folks out in Eagle are trying to assess the horrendous flood damage, save what they can, and rebuild the rest by fall. Anyone who lives here knows that the construction season is short, and that every hour of summer daylight is precious. It will take all they’ve got to have winter ready places to live by the time the snow flies. We know from Mudflatter yukonbushgrma who lives in Eagle that tools, clothing, dogfood and other supplies are needed by…
Dan Sullivan Embraces Socialism?!
Thom Hartmann is in town! He’s the guest of honor at a dinner tonight in Anchorage, and is broadcasting live from KUDO 1080am this morning. I just listened to him in the car on the way to work. He spoke with both Acting Mayor Matt Claman, and Mayor Elect Dan Sullivan. The latter was an interesting exchange. Hartmann asked how Sullivan thought Sarah Palin was doing. Sullivan said she had become “distracted” by the VP nomination, and that “If I had to give her a grade, I wouldn’t give her one.” Then he said he was glad she was back…
Palin Email Hacker’s Lawyer Seeks Dismissal Because Emails are Public Record.
Wade Davies, attorney for David Kernell, the notorious Palin email hacker who retrieved and published emails from Governor Sarah Palin’s off-the-radar email account, (cleverly disguised as [email protected]), has asked for a dismissal of charges. On what grounds? Because “an Alaska court has issued an order requiring Ms. Palin to preserve the correspondence in her private e-mail accounts on the grounds that the e-mails are public records.” The court ruled on this after local political watchdog Andree McLeod pointed out that the governor was illegitimately using this personal email account to conduct official state business, speculating that this unorthodox use of private emails may have…
Alaska’s Deadliest Match – Fish and Pebble Mine
Captain Sig Hansen, well known for his featured status on the cable show Deadliest Catch has used his political capital, as it were, to speak out against the proposed Pebble Mine Project. It’s unusual for a “Deadliest Catch” crew member to take a hard stance in a big Alaska resource battle like Pebble. Hansen, who lives in Seattle, said he usually shies away from requests to get involved in anything political. Because Hansen exploits crab stocks and other Alaska fisheries, he said, he can’t be opposed to all resource development. “I’m not your typical greenie,” Hansen said. [snip] He’s persuaded…
The Legend of the Squeaky Door Hinge Bird (UPDATED – Culprit Identified)
I went for a really nice hike last weekend. It was sunny, but things were still a little wet, and all was cleansed of the dust and volcanic ash by a nice gentle rain shower the day before. I had a destination in mind; a little stream with a nice spot to sit and eat a sandwich. My mind was free and relaxed, the sky was blue, and never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I was about to come face to feathered face with….my white whale, the squeaky doorhinge bird. Let me preface what I’m about to…
Where are Those Garbage Bags? Palin’s Wardrobe is Liberated.
Palin’s wardrobe malfunction. It was all the buzz for a while. We were told that she didn’t know about the $180,000 in clothes, didn’t ask for the clothes, didn’t want the clothes, didn’t need the clothes, was going to donate the clothes to charity, did an audit of the clothes, sent them all back in garbage bags, and on and on. That red leather jacket may as well have been an albatross around Palin’s neck during the last weeks of the campaign. Republican donors were furious that their donations to the RNC were used to puff and fluff the VP…
Tuesday Catch Up – Down With Nukes, Bedbugs and Flaming Hyperbolic Outrage.
It’s Not Just You Many Alaskans are wondering how on earth they could have voted for Sarah Palin the first time. Don’t feel bad. Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin can thank Washington lobbyist and political consultant Rick Davis, chief executive officer of John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign, for being the ultimate pick to become the Republican vice presidential candidate. “It was all his doing. He was completely snowed by Palin,” a source close to Mr. McCain confided to this columnist over the weekend. “He was totally taken by her.” See, it can happen to anyone. Don’t Let the Bedbugs Bite The…
Palin Backer Wanted to Pay the Clintons to be Friends With Sarah.
John Coale, husband of Fox’s Greta Van Susteren, who is oddly bipartisan and likes getting to know powerful female politicians and promoting their careers in a way that borders on the creepy, tried to be a matchmaker to the stars. He figured if Sarah Palin used the legally allowed $5000 from her PAC money to pay off some of Hillary Clinton’s campaign debt, then Democrats and Independents would like her more, and wouldn’t pick on her so much. Apparently, after he sobered up and still thought it was a good idea, he came to Alaska with his wife to see Todd Palin…
