Open Thread – Happy 2011!

Happy 2011 to all! Welcome to a new year of possibilities, promise and hope. If this one doesn’t work out well, don’t worry because there’s another one coming in 365 days. Stay safe wherever you are, especially if you are navigating the icy roads in Anchorage tonight. May your new year be filled with joy, good work, success, and love. Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each new year find you a better man. ~Benjamin Franklin

Open Thread – Snowy Spruce

Thanks for your indulgence everyone, while The Mudflats has gone in to low gear for the holidays. You can always depend on the daily open thread as a place to post links, and enjoy good conversation. But the blog may be a bit thin on content beyond that… just for a little while. We’ll be back up to full speed in January.

Open Thread – Beauty Everywhere

I took this picture from a parking lot bordering the Seward Highway. There were cars speeding by right out of the frame. I love the fact that beauty is everywhere if you stop and look.

Open Thread – Fly On

Flyinureye at the Mudflats Art Department came up with this wonderful tribute to our dear friend Roger Ranch who passed away just a few days ago. I think he would have approved. Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.

Open Thread – Love One Another

Every year, I try to get a new ornament for the tree. This year, I was standing on line waiting to buy a special present and my eye fell on this one – the only one like it in a display of little gold balls. It spoke to me. Merry Christmas, Mudflatters. Count your blessings, and be grateful for every one.

Farewell to a Friend. Roger Ranch 1942-2010

Today, Anchorage lost a great soul. He wasn’t a political leader, he didn’t hold office, but he did what we all should do – he showed up. And he didn’t just show up for a pet cause, or a particular belief. He showed up for all of them. He showed up for labor, and women, and LGBT rights, and the planet, and peace, and to support his community. Every rally, every march, every event, there was Roger. If he found a candidate he believed in, he was there every day volunteering and doing what he could. Even if people didn’t…

Shannyn Moore is Moving – Nudge That Dial!

Starting Monday, our very own Shannyn Moore will be moving her radio show from its current location at 1080am, up the dial to 1020am.  Same time, same studio, same Dave the producer, but…  she’ll be back on a Fox affiliate station.  You remember when Shannyn was on one day a week at rightie KBYR? Well, it’s deja vu all over again, only with different call letters.  The oddly named brand new KOAN will be lighting up the dial, as KUDO goes dark. The owners of KUDO, the IBEW, have decided to get out of the radio business, so Shannyn has stepped…

Open Thread – Santa Con

Sitting at the Taproot Cafe this evening over a glass of wine, I noticed a strange phenomenon. A steady stream of Santas, some with elves in tow began to filter in. Then came reindeer. And a grinch. I learned from those more knowledgeable than myself that this very night was “Santa Con” in Anchorage. I had no idea what Santa Con was, but apparently it’s a yearly event that I somehow missed. Large masses of people dressed as our favorite Christmas icon parade in the street, and pop in at local watering holes across the nation. And as luck would…
