The Shannyn Moore Show – Live Blogging

Shannyn Moore will be sweeping the conservative dust out of the building and taking over the KBYR studios for a blissful two hours, as she does every Saturday.  Of course, I’m not actually here as you read this.  I’m off somewhere enjoying the last gasp of summer.  So, I can’t tell you specifics about the show, but Shannyn’s always got something interesting on deck. It’s not like we have nothing to talk about this week – health care and the public option, the President indoctrinating our kids with a love of learning, the communist statue outside the NBC studios that…

Open Thread – A Miracle!

It’s a miracle!  No, not the beautiful glimpse of the rugged icy Alaskan landscape peeking through the misty clouds… I’m going to be away for the weekend!  That makes twice in one summer I’ll be off enjoying the beautiful Alaskan outdoors.  Not nearly enough, but better than nothing!  The weather is supposed to be nice, and I’m grabbing the last few rays of sun and the last holiday weekend of summer and squeezing them for all they’re worth. And, I should give a shout-out to one of our wonderful advertisers because I will be using the awesome sleeping bag doubler sent…

This beautiful thing is a glacier from the air.  It’s somewhere in Alaska and it’s absolutely enormous.  You can see the large crevasses in the lower right part of the picture.  As the glacier flows toward the ocean, scraping off rock and debris, it creates these incredible striped patterns.  Sometimes two glaciers will flow into each other like the tributaries of a river and the rocky debris they’ve been grinding off at the edges will meet up and become a dark stripe down the middle of the new, wider glacier.  This one is the “stripiest” one I’ve ever seen.  It…

When the clouds started to dissapate, there was no doubt I was getting close to home. After 10 days of trying to recalibrate my internal Alaskan thermostat to temperatures well into the 90s, and humidity the same, the snow-covered mountains looked positively inviting. I kept thinking of those old York Peppermint Patty commercials about the cold artcitc breeze blowing through your hair. Snow-capped peaks and impossibly blue water. Yup…almost there.

Open Thread – Endless Skies

We’re getting close to the end of our virtual flight from Houston to Anchorage.  I knew the clear skies couldn’t last.  As soon as I was sure we must be over Alaska, the clouds rolled in.  At first I was sad to miss the scenery, but cloudscapes have their own beauty.  I remember my first airplane ride.  I must have been 2 or 3, and when we popped out over the top of the clouds it seemed absolutely magical.  I remember asking if we could go jump on them.  I’m several decades older than that now, but I still look…

Senator Edward Kennedy Dies of Brain Cancer at 77.

“The work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives and the dreams shall never die.” ~ Edward Kennedy It’s a sad day.  The Liberal Lion of the Senate is gone, and before this country has seen real health care reform.  That topic was near and dear to the Senator.  He did not live to see it, but I hope we can pass a good bill in his memory. A tireless champion of the living wage, health care reform and equal rights, Kennedy, like the rest of his family lived the philosophy “with great privilege comes great responsibility.”   His…

Fun at MSNBC – Shannyn Takes Manhattan and Rachel Bites Brian?!

I got to tag along on a great trip to MSNBC the other day.  Shannyn Moore, who was my traveling companion and roomie at the Netroots Nation conference and beyond, was asked to be a guest on Countdown with Keith Olbermann while we were in the Big Apple. So off we went to the studio.  It was a huge, beautiful facility, and it was fun listening to Shannyn compare the studios in Anchorage with this one.  It was quite amazing and huge.   We posed for our photo ID at the entrance, and were escorted upstairs for a quick tour of the…

Netroots Nation – Bill Clinton

When I heard that President Bill Clinton was going to be speaking at the Netroots Nation conference this year, I was pretty excited.  I noted the irony that I hadn’t ever blogged about Bill Clinton until last week when  I had noted with gratitude the role that he had played in freeing the two journalists being held captive in North Korea, and mentioned how he had redeemed himself a bit in my eyes for NAFTA, and the Telecommunications Act of 1996 among other things.  I hold grudges sometimes, but I’m not beyond recognizing that he has had some pretty amazing achievements…
