Open Thread – Just Ignore Him

Saw a few nice looking black bears hanging out at water’s edge near the Esther Island fish hatchery. This one made me laugh because he sat there like that for a while, and a seagull was perched so they looked like they were back to back. It looked like two completely unlikely animals trying desperately to ignore each other. Crazy day today… Just when you thought the Palin bucket of drama was drained dry, there’s more. And for those of you following the interminable rounds of public testimony on Anchorage’s non-discrimination ordinance, they finished up tonight. Have fun with the…

Open Thread – Save Our CEOs

Behold the trailer of Michael Moore’s new film, ‘Save Our CEOs.’ Select theatres last night when the trailer premiered actually had ushers walking down the aisles with cans. Michael Moore vs. Corporate Corruption.  This oughtta be good.

The Legend of the Squeaky Door Hinge Bird (UPDATED – Culprit Identified)

I went for a really nice hike last weekend. It was sunny, but things were still a little wet, and all was cleansed of the dust and volcanic ash by a nice gentle rain shower the day before. I had a destination in mind; a little stream with a nice spot to sit and eat a sandwich. My mind was free and relaxed, the sky was blue, and never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I was about to come face to feathered face with….my white whale, the squeaky doorhinge bird. Let me preface what I’m about to…

Open Thread – Anonymous Blog Commenters Have the REAL Power…

I just had to share with you this piece by Andy Borowitz of The Borowitz Report. If you are not familiar with him, he is truly one of the most brilliant satirists of our day. You can subscribe to his commentary at borowitzreport.com It’s a great read. And I knew you all would get a kick out of this one. Ohhhhh, the power! Open Thread – Unreal Men Beware!

For the most part when I look in my inbox and review the many daily messages I get from Newt Gingrich’s Human Events Newsletter, it goes something like this:   click…..eyeroll…..delete….click…..eyeroll….delete.   It’s the wash, rinse, repeat of Conservative spam.  But this one I thought I’d pass along.  *Warning*  Put down the coffee. Right after a screeching rant from Ann Coulter about how liberals can’t stand “sexy Christians” like Sarah Palin and Carrie Prejean, came this book advertisement. Today’s weak and pusillanimous Nanny State is anything but hospitable to true manhood. And that’s why we need real men more than ever. The Ultimate Man’s Survival Guide is…

These Boots Were Made for Walkin’…. to Pittsburgh?

A couple Mudflatters over at the Mudflats Forum made a suggestion that your humble Muckraker apply for a scholarship to attend this year’s Netroots Nation conference. Formerly known as Yearly Kos, this year’s NN will be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, home of the very first Mudstock meetup! So I did some thinking and planning and decided to submit my application for a scholarship which will cover the cost of registration, and hotel accommodations. So, if you want to vote, you can click HERE and look for the yellow boots! I got a nice email encouraging me to post a photo so…

Open Thread – Small Things

More fun with my macro lens.  This is a piece of moss and the tiniest little fiddlehead fern (or similar flora) that I’ve ever seen.  The moss is the kind eveyrone is familiar with, and this one is about the width of a pencil eraser.  Both these little treasures were growing out of a tree stump.  Sometimes I’m glad I’m a slow hiker. Happy Day, and enjoy the open thread!

Open Thread – Laughter is the Best Medicine

After reading all the comments on the Name That Book thread, I can honestly say I’m in pain. I laughed until I thought I could laugh no more. I’m going to check in tomorrow morning, and pull out a few more, and then post…..the poll. The monstrous poll. The mile long poll. The poll with over 100 entries. The poll to end all polls. I simply could not make it shorter. And at that, I know I’ve left dozens in there that were totally hilarious. But my fingers and eyes have given out. This proved to be quite the Herculean…

Open Thread – Mudflats Turns 1!

Morning, Mudflatters!  It was nice to pretty much have a weekend off from political matters.  I wish all a belated happy Mother’s Day.  It struck me just now that my first post ever was on Mother’s Day!  One year ago today Mudflats entered the big wide world of the internet.  I never imagined I or Mudflats would have ended up here.  Thanks to so many of you who have given your time, talent and energy to make this all happen.  And a special thanks to Snoskred, Sephy, Danny, and the incredible team of Admins and Moderators who have devoted so many…

Open Thread – Alaska State Bird

Good morning, Mudflatters!  I bet that woke you up!  Behold the lowly mosquito, better known as The Alaska State Bird.  They’re not quite as big as what you see here, but they are BIG, especially at this time of year.  This guy (or gal) was almost the width of a penny.  The “first crop” of mosquitoes, as they are known, are also very slow and heavy.  You can easily feel them when they land on your arm, and it’s quite simple to brush them off before they do any damage.  Later in the year they get smal, quick and vicious. …
