Open Thread – Duck Shack
More from our virtual flight across Cook Inlet. These marshy wetlands, right across from Anchorage support huge populations of waterfowl including the rare Tule White-fronted Goose. The entire world population of only 5500 birds is known to breed only in the marshes and flooded shrub habitats of Upper Cook Inlet. All told, about 32 species of waterfowl occur in this area, 22 of which are likely to breed here. The small red building in the photo is a “duck shack” which is used by duck hunters in the fall. No new duck shacks can be built in the wetlands, or transferred to another…

I don’t know about you, but I think I need this one….. A peaceful fish tank from the Smithsonian Natural History Museum in Washington, D.C.

I’m not sure which river this is. And I’m not sure which mountain this is. That’s part of what amazes me about Alaska. There are so many rivers, and more than a million lakes, and who knows how many mountains. Most have no names, and the ones that do are sometimes hard to keep straight. But they’re all beautiful.
Open Thread – Lucky Moose?
Brian the Moose got to hang out at the Pai Gow table with Brad Friedman of BradBlog.com and Mike Rogers of BlogActive.com this evening. It was decided after many hands that Brian is luck neutral, as he didn’t seem to sway things one way or the other. He’s always been lucky for me, though!
It’s Alaska Day on the Nicole Sandler Show!
The inimitable Nicole Sandler (formerly with Air America) will be broadcasting live from Netroots Nation from 3-5pm local time. Senate candidate Scott McAdams will be in the house. He came to Las Vegas to network and soak in the great sessions, panels and candidate events. He’ll be on the broadcast, as will Shannyn Moore and/or me! It’s a little mini Alaska reunion. You can live stream it HERE or listen to the podcast later if you miss it. It’s been a great day, and Shannyn and I have enjoyed meeting our fellow scholarship winners. We just had a great talk…
Open Thread – Alaska Women Not for Sarah Palin, Part 5
Alaskans for Truth Rally, September 2008 As you may have noticed, the blogging has shifted into low gear for a little while. Lots going on in my other life, and attention must be paid to the job that pays the bills before I head out to Netroots Nation next week! I’m looking forward to the trip. If it’s half as productive and informative and fun as it was last year, I’ll be happy. And I will definitely be blogging from there, and keeping you updated via travel log.
Open Thread – Birds of Homer Continued.
Ready for a birding game? OK, it’s time to play “Spot the Cormorant!” The rest of the birds are murres. They fit the northern ecological niche that would be filled with penguins if we had them. And they do sort of look like mini-penguins. I know it would probably be the worst thing in the world, but after my fantasy of regenerating mammoths from DNA, and breeding Siberian tigers in the Brooks Range, I think it would be fun to transport some penguins up here from Antarctica. I bet they’d love it. (ducking flying shoes hurled by biologists)
