Jeremy Scahill takes on Obama Talking Points

Friend of the Mudflats, and Nation contributor Jeremy Scahill went on MSNBC’s The Cycle to discuss Obama’s drone program along with his book and film Dirty Wars. Scahill has spent the past several years investigating drones, private militaries, and US war crimes under both the Bush and Obama administrations. Touré (yes, that’s his only name), ever the defender of all things Obama asked him: “I’m curious, Jeremy, as to how you think we should be doing this, If you were the commander-in-chief entrusted with keeping Americans safe, and your legacy is on the line, and all those sort of things, how…

Moment of Clarity from Lee Camp

Good friend, colleague and the funniest person I know – Lee Camp has a new show. And you should be watching it. It’s called Moment of Clarity – and it’s available on youtube – he’s 3 episodes in and he’s already had Greg Palast, Margaret Flowers of the Physicians for a National Healthcare Program and Roseanne Barr of well… Roseanne. [His shows are often NSFW due to swearing] It’s like the Daily Show – except funnier, more swear words and doesn’t mock activists like Stewarts show does. This is a show for people that give a sh*t. The Moment of…

50,000 at Forward On Climate Rally in DC

This photo-essay was originally published in Truth-Out.org by Zach D Roberts, The Mudflats New York Bureau Chief A reported 50,000 people attended the 350/Sierra Club rally yesterday in Washington DC – making it the largest environmental march in decades. There were also dozens of smaller rallies across the country, including in Los Angeles, San Diego and St. Louis. The action in DC drew in people from around the country – Jim and Bonnie, full-time climate activists both took the train from Portland, Oregon. They held a sign that called on the President to be true to his own words “We…

Obama’s War and Peace

Editor’s Note from Shannyn Moore: I have had this conversation with John several times. I am glad he wrote his thoughts down, and we welcome him as the latest guest author here at The Mudflats.  My best advice is to let it set in. We bite the shiny hooks of not-so-breaking news every day. President Obama has to be more than Not-Mitt. Sometimes being an progressive voter makes you feel like a refugee from the Island of Dr. Moreau. Some morally inverted, twisted character from a Céline novel. Just breathe. Just read. Just push for a better America. Oh, and…

Don Young Darkens the Door and Crosses the Aisle

Yes, the 20 term Congressman for All Alaskans (who voted for him) has decided that he will attend the State of the Union address for only the third time since 1974. Why isn’t he a regular? “Because I’m an old hunter,” he told APRN. “And when you have the president, the vice president, the speaker of the House, the president of the Senate, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Supreme Court, the diplomatic corps, and everybody together under one roof, it always gives me great concern.” Although I appreciate the Congressman’s caution and sentiments, the thought of Don Young holding the…

Palin’s “Reload” Hits “Target”: Updated

Sarah Palin’s call to arms, “Don’t Retreat, Reload” finally results in a tragic shooting of an Arizona Congresswoman. Three term Representative Gabrielle Giffords, representing Arizona’s 8th district and caught in Palin’s cross-hairs, was gunned down today and shot in the head. One of her aides was killed and at least 12 others injured. In March, Sarah Palin posted this ad on her facebook page and tweeted, “Commonsense Conservatives & lovers of America: “Don’t Retreat, Instead – RELOAD!” Pls see my Facebook page.” Arizona Senator John McCain defended Sarah Palin on NBC’s Today Show last March: McCain was asked about what…

Odds and Ends – Cabbage, Landfill, Venom and Mud.

Pass the Slaw! Those long summer days always make the giant vegetable exhibit at the Alaska State Fair interesting.  This year was even more exciting than usual…if you consider staring at giant vegetables exciting. A world record green cabbage tipped the scales at 125.9 pounds, with a 21-inch diameter head, and a leaf span of about 5 feet. In the shadow of the giant cabbage was another world record breaker, an 82.9 pound rutabega. Dump da Dump Dump… The City of Emmonak is about to receive a $3.2 million loan and a $1.4 million grant from stimulus money to construct…

Let the Gnashing of Teeth and the Rending of Garments Begin!

Conservatives are all….”a-Twitter” (as you’ll see below) about the fact that, as we all knew, the President of the United States will actually be appointing a justice to the Supreme Court. David Souter today announced that he will be stepping down in June. Here’s what President Obama had to say today when he interrupted a press briefing to address the issue: Now, the process of selecting someone to replace Justice Souter is among my most serious responsibilities as president, so I will seek somebody with a sharp and independent mind and a record of excellence and integrity. I will seek someone who…
