With the number of uncontested races in Anchorage this election cycle, it surprised me to see someone actually running against Bill Wielechowski, also known as “The Best Bill in Juneau.” There’s nobody who works harder or more effectively for the benefit of all Alaskans than our favorite Bill. So who is this daring upstart that thinks he can topple Wielechowski? His name is Ron Slepecki, making this race: “Slepecki vs. Wielechowski” Say that ten times fast. So let’s check out Mr. Slepecki and see what he tells us on his website, and then we’ll look at what he doesn’t tell…

OK, Mudflatters… It’s been a little while since we’ve gone on a group foray into Palin World, but this one I couldn’t resist. This interview was quite something. The “naughty librarian” is nowhere in sight. Palin’s latest incarnation is more like the mean librarian. The one who slams a giant book on the table next to you when she catches you whispering. (Yes, I’m speaking from experience) Tight-lipped, jaw-clenched, death-stare librarian, complete with the Xtra Large helmet shaped bumpit. Fair warning. You’ll find yourself cheering for Bill O’Reilly. I meant to post this last night, but frankly after transcribing into the wee hours of…

Governor Sean Parnell, who has framed himself as an advocate for women and children, last week vetoed a bipartisan bill passed by the Alaska Legislature that would have provided health care for 1300 Alaskan children and prenatal care to more than 200 pregnant Alaskan women. These, most vulnerable Alaskans are those that fall between 175% and 200% of the federally recognized poverty level. Those that fall below that level are already covered by the state program, called Denali KidCare. What made the governor decide to veto the bill? He just discovered, he said, that some of the money allocated would…

It’s kind of like the Runaway Train at Six Flags. You look at it and wonder how on earth it can possibly stay on the rails with all those twists and turns, and then one day, you’re minding your own business, eating your pretzel or cotton candy, and you look up and see the thing come to a bump in the rails, keep right on going, careen over the side, and splash right into the big duck pond. Welcome to the Alaska Personnel Board. You remember them. They’re the 3-member board of Republican governor appointees that said the investigation by the…

It’s easy to feel sad today, but it’s good to feel as though sadness is being used to create something helpful and worthwhile. This is why, back in April, President Obama declared that 9/11 would be a Day of Service to honor the spirit of those that came together to help each other, and many who lost their own lives in service to others eight years ago today. The idea came from Jay Winuk, whose brother, a corporate lawyer and former volunteer fireman, saw buildings burning and dropped everything to help people out of the tower. His remains were found…

Well, we all know what unfortunate moment will be most remembered from the President’s speech on health care last night; a heckle from another ill-mannered, sophomoric, Republican who is far more interested in disruption than discussion. This time it’s Joe Wilson from … wait for it … South Carolina. It’s been a rough couple months for the thinking folks of South Carolina. Believe me, Alaskans can sympathize. Up until today, Joe Wilson was just another anonymous Southern Republican troglodyte Congressman, unknown to all but the poor people of South Carolina and the most serious horse race junkies. Today, he’s the hyena…

The sock puppet strikes again. Twice in 24 hours someone calling themselves “Sarah Palin” has written a statement on her Facebook page. I’m pleased that the White House is finally responding to Republican health care ideas instead of pretending they don’t exist.[1] But in doing so President Obama should follow his own sound advice and avoid making “wild misrepresentations”.[2] Medicare vouchers would give everyone on Medicare the chance to decide for themselves which health plan to use, rather than leave that decision to government bureaucrats. Such proposals are the kind of health care reform that Republicans stand for: market-oriented, patient-centered,…

Pass the Slaw! Those long summer days always make the giant vegetable exhibit at the Alaska State Fair interesting. This year was even more exciting than usual…if you consider staring at giant vegetables exciting. A world record green cabbage tipped the scales at 125.9 pounds, with a 21-inch diameter head, and a leaf span of about 5 feet. In the shadow of the giant cabbage was another world record breaker, an 82.9 pound rutabega. Dump da Dump Dump… The City of Emmonak is about to receive a $3.2 million loan and a $1.4 million grant from stimulus money to construct…

Now that the Town Hall meetings in Anchorage are over, and Senator Mark Begich has left the state for Washington D.C., what’s a poor bored wingnut to do? Well, after drumming their fingers for 24 hours, waiting for new marching orders, they’re off and running again. Trying to get everyone health care is bad enough, but behold the latest ‘moral outrage’ that President Obama is inflicting on the poor innocent children according to the conservatives. On Tuesday, September 8th, that man is going to be on the TeeVee, in schools across the nation telling the children that education is important…

Oh boy. Vanity Fair does it again. Get ready for the latest teaser extraordinaire about life in the Palin house after the 2008 election. The world’s most infamous ex-almost-son-in-law has let loose a couple interesting little nuggets of which there promise to be more in the upcoming full article entitled “Me and Mrs. Palin.” “The Palin house was much different from what many people expect of a normal family, even before she was nominated for vice president. There wasn’t much parenting in that house. Sarah doesn’t cook, Todd doesn’t cook—the kids would do it all themselves: cook, clean, do the…
