Photos from the Provincetown Blessing of the Fleet and Portuguese Festival

Anthony Bourdain, who got his cooking start on Cape Cod has called, “Provincetown: a wonderland of tolerance with a longtime tradition of accepting artists, writers, the badly behaved, the gay, the different. It was paradise. The joy that can only come with the absolute certainty that you were invincible; that none of the choices that you’d make would have any repercussions or any effect on your later life. We didn’t think about those things.” P-Town (as the t-shirts say) is at the very end of Cape Cod, it’s a bit like Homer, AK – just if Homer was flooded with a LGBT crowd…

Photos: Hillary Takes the Stage One More Time In New Hampshire

TheMudflats is in New Hampshire! I’m covering the primaries, so be sure to keep an eye on my twitter feed @zdroberts and keep checking back as I’ll be posting photos like these as often as I can get upload them. Every politico in the planet is in the Live Free of Die state right now so the internet is a bit slow here. Last night Hillary took to the stage in Portsmouth, New Hampshire speaking to a packed house at the Great Bay Community College. It was a mixed crowd of students, locals and over 80 people who bussed up from Arkansas….

Photos: The NRA Takes Nashville

Three days in the center of gun country celebrating the Second Amendment – we saw big rifles, small handguns, Presidential candidates and so much more. Here’s a selection of photos from myself and Jeanne Devon of our time at the National Rifle Association’s Annual Meeting – this year in Nashville, Tennessee.

Martin Luther King’s Church: At the Historic Ebenezer Baptist

In October I had the honor of photographing a service that the Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. It was just before the 2014 election so people were registering and calling for a turnout at the polls. Reverend Warnock, the current head of the church called for people to sign up on the Souls to the Polls forms that were distributed. The service was one of the more moving that I’ve ever been to Rev. Warnock preached of the importance of participation in your community. The original Ebenezer Baptist Church is now part of the National Park system and…

#BringBackOurGirls Rally at NY City Hall – Photos

Yesterday in New York City Councilmembers called for action on the kidnapped Nigerian girls. As of publication, nearly 300 Nigerian girls are still missing taken by the terrorist group Boko Haram. The US military is getting involved using surveillance planes and satellites to search for the group. I recommend checking out the excellent coverage at Al Jazeera for more info.

Smoke Up! – Smoked Salmon Photos

Salmon is the lifeblood of Alaska. We grill it. We jerk it. (Jerky it? Jerkify it?)  We pan fry it. We put it in our vodka. This last week TheMudflats contributing editor Shannyn Moore spent a couple days working through some of the largest filets I’ve ever seen – smoking and canning them. I did what I know how to do with salmon… take photos of them. (and sneak some for my bagels) By the way… if you like Salmon… you should tell your legislators. Click this link.

Rock for the Salmon! – Music at Salmonstock

Salmonstock was several weeks ago – I know – but we just got so many awesome photos we’re finally ready to start posting them all. Please keep checking back for more photo-essays from our fun visit to Salmonstock… and start prepping for next year. Photos above by Zach Roberts A couple extras below by Jeanne Devon

Aurora Hunt Successful

Saturday night while most people are hitting the bars and partying – Mudflats contributor Carl Johnson, Frank Stelges and I journeyed to an undisclosed location to hunt the elusive aurora. (I have been sworn to secrecy) While our prey took a long time to show – when it did – it was a glorious one. The moon was out in full force, and barely a cloud in the sky, the stars were shining bright and thankfully the temperature stayed relatively nice… so here my mud-puppies are the spoils of a victorious hunt. The mighty aurora.

Salmonstock: Ray Troll Prints!

At Salmonstock 2013 I was lucky enough to see the honorable artist Ray Troll make a print. If you’re a follower of Renewable Resources Coalition and Salmonstock (which you should be if you’re a reader of ours!) – you’ll recognize his art from the many t-shirts that they sell at the Salmonstock store. Ray also is the artist of the Raven’s Brew Coffee bags. During the process of making the print a couple attendees of Salmonstock pitched in to help as it’s a long and careful process of making sure that it comes out right. I kept on shooting throughout the…

Anchorage At Dusk

Last month, when we were having nicer weather I went wandering around town looking for the perfect sunset in Anchorage. I think that I found a couple of nice ones… but I’m still on the lookout for the right place for the perfect photo. Where in Anchorage do you go for the perfect sunset shot? Leave your comments below, would love to try them out.
